Chapter 11 - I'll make him pay

Avril's POV

"So, do you have a girlfriend?" I ask her teasingly

"No I don't. I had one just some time ago, but we split." Mary says

"Why? What happened?" I ask

"Things were no longer working so we decided to go our separate ways." She shrugs

"Oh, sorry about that." I tell her

"It's cool it's all in the past now?" She says shrugging again

"I guess so," I say "Mary can I ask you something?"

"Yeah sure, what is it?"

"I hope I'm not touching a spot that hurts you but I've been meaning to ask. Where's your dad? Sorry but I've never heard talk you about him."

"It's fine Avril you don't have to be scared of asking me anything no matter what it may be." She says while giving me a reassuring smile "well my dad left my mom and I for another woman when I was little,"

"Oh God I'm sorry about that. I hope I didn't bring back any sad past memories by asking you this," I say feeling a lamp form on my throat. It's just like Jonathan's dad. Are all men the same or what. Do they all not care about their families.

"Avril like I said before it's really fine of you to ask."

"Wait have I ever asked you what you want to go and do at the university. What do you want to study?"

"Electrical engineering," she answers

"Wow that's really cool. When will you go?"

"I applied for a place at the university of Zambia and I got accepted. So I'm bound to go in the next three months that's if I'll be granted a student loan by the government." She says.

"That's really great news Mary. I bet they will grant you that student loan, you're quite a smart girl." I tell her

"Thanks for the encouragement. You're really a great friend."

"There's no need to thank me I'm only stating the truth. I'll try my level best to help you in some things."

"Thanks," she says

"No need to thank me."

********

"That idiot. He must be out of his mind!" Rose shouts on the other side of the line "I swear to God I'll kill that good for nothing bustard."

"Oh lady watch your tongue." I tell her. Oh gawd I think I might have made a mistake by telling her what Jonathan did. She's been screaming for five minutes now since I told her about the incident with Jonathan "are you even alone for you to be screaming like that?"

"Of course I'm alone!" She blurts out "do I ever like being found with people?"

"Hey, I was just asking. I didn't mean to offend you." I raise my hands in mock surrender not she that can see me anyways. we've agreed to never ever video call each other because it will be risking me.

"Whatever," she says voice now calmer than it was "but seriously how can that dude treat my sister like she's some slave. I'm seriously going kill that boy."

I chuckle atthis. Seriously? 'That boy'? my sister is one hell of a child.

"What what's funny?" I hear her ask me

"Well it's just the person you're referring to as 'that boy' is twice your age." I tell her

"He's not twice my age for Christ sake A . He's twenty and is literally one and Three quarters my age. Simple math you cannot do. They'll be stealing for you in that restaurant of yours." She says frustrated much.

"Oh gosh aren't you a little bit big headed," I say while chuckling "anyways how do you plan on killing that same boy?"

"I will figure something out," she says "all I know is that I'll make him pay dearly. How did he think he could hurt my sister and I'd let him get away with it."

"It's good to have such a protective younger sister," I say smiling.

"Of course it is," she says matter of factly "if I don't protect you who will? Huh?"

"No one," I say surpressing a laughter she can't be serious right? I mean how old is she and she's talking about protecting me. Wow just wow.

"Yeah that's right, so if you ever find yourself in trouble you know who to call." She warns me.

"Yes ma'am, I know."

"Good girl," she says.

Oh okayy this is serious how exactly does a twelve year old girl protect a nineteen year old girl? I guess my sister has her ways.

"Anyways how are you doing?" She asks "I hope you're not crying over that dude."

"I'm good," I say well that's a lie. I'm literally still hurt and my soul aches at the fact that my first love broke my heart "and I'm not crying over that dude." That's also a lie I literally cried myself to sleep last night

"That's good I don't want you shedding a tear over someone who clearly doesn't deserve you." She says, some rage in her tone of voice.

"I hear you boss. Anyways how's May and auntie Maggie. Have you been to see them lately?"

"Auntie Maggie is just fine but May doesn't seem too fine. She's not sick that I know for a fact. I know a sick person when I see one. It seems like it's some emotional rollercoaster. I don't know what it could be though." She's says worriedly

"Oh, are you sure about this?" I ask starting to get worried about my cousin.

"Yes," she answers. "You know how May opens up to me but she's been keeping to herself lately. She's become too reserved for her kind."

"Bubu this is serious. It sounds too serious to let it pass. I think I need her number. I need to talk to her." I say.

"But Avril, how sure are she won't sell you off to papa?" Rose asks suddenly sounding worried.

"I don't think she would. I know if she gives dad my line then that will be the end for me. But I highly doubt she'd do that to me. She's been my best cousin and friend after all. Just send me her number please.

We can't let a sister suffer on her own. We need to be there for her just as she'd there for us." I explain to my worried sister.

"Alright, let me send it to you then. But promise you won't get into trouble." She says sounding more worried than she was before.

"I promise I won't get into trouble. Is that good?"

"Yeah, call me when you talk to her,"

"Alright I will. Bye."

"Bye big sis. Je t'aime,"

"Je t'aime."

You know my sister is way too mature for age. I mean look at the way she behaves as though she's my age. But that's what I love about her. She's unique and I always thought her big brain is her superpower. What? Don't judge me. Okay prove to me you also didn't think the same as I did
