Chapter 3 - The flame of jealousy

The sun was a fiery orb in the sky, casting an intense light that seemed to mirror the tension brewing within the Lin family compound. Lin Yi stood in the training grounds, his eyes focused on the practice dummy before him. His hands gripped his sword tightly, the blue glow from the ancient ring on his finger pulsing in rhythm with his heartbeat.

Lin Hai stood a few paces away, observing his younger brother with a mix of pride and concern. "Remember, control is key," he advised. "Let the energy flow through you, not against you."

Lin Yi nodded, taking a deep breath to steady himself. He could feel the energy within him, a wild beast that was eager to be unleashed. He focused, trying to channel that energy into his sword, to make it an extension of his will.

Suddenly, a voice cut through the air, sharp and mocking. "Pathetic," Lin Fang sneered, stepping out of the shadows. "You call that training?"

Lin Yi's eyes flashed with anger, but he kept his focus. He knew better than to let Lin Fang's words distract him. He continued his practice, each strike more powerful than the last.

Lin Fang, however, was not deterred. He sauntered closer, his own sword drawn and gleaming in the sunlight. "Or perhaps you're just not cut out for this, cousin," he taunted. "Maybe you should stick to what you're good at—failing."

Lin Yi's control wavered, and the energy within him surged, the blue glow on his sword intensifying. He could feel the anger rising within him, a dangerous flame that threatened to consume him.

Lin Hai stepped forward, his expression stern. "Lin Fang, enough. This is not the time or place for your games."

Lin Fang merely laughed, his eyes cold and challenging. "Oh, I'm not playing games, brother. I'm merely pointing out the truth. Our cousin here is a disappointment."

Lin Yi's grip on his sword tightened, the energy within him reaching a boiling point. Without warning, he lunged forward, his sword slicing through the air with a speed that surprised even him.

Lin Fang barely managed to parry the strike, his eyes widening in shock. "Well, well," he sneered, "looks like the little bird has grown some teeth."

The two engaged in a fierce duel, their swords clashing in a dance of steel and light. Lin Yi fought with a ferocity he had never known, his anger fueling his movements. Each strike was met with a counter from Lin Fang, their swords sparking against each other.

Lin Hai watched with growing concern, ready to intervene should things get out of hand. The other warriors had paused in their training, drawn to the spectacle unfolding before them.

Lin Yi's sword glowed brighter, the energy from the ring pulsing through him. He could feel the power within him, a wild and untamed force that he struggled to control. Yet, in this moment, it seemed to respond to his anger, his determination.

Lin Fang, on the other hand, fought with a cold precision. His movements were calculated, each strike designed to provoke and undermine. Yet, as the duel continued, he found himself hard-pressed to keep up with Lin Yi's relentless offensives.

The duel reached a crescendo as Lin Yi launched a powerful strike, his sword slicing through the air with a force that seemed to shake the very ground. Lin Fang barely managed to parry, his sword shuddering under the impact.

In that moment, Lin Yi saw an opening. With a swift move, he disarmed Lin Fang, his sword pointing at his cousin's throat. The training grounds fell silent, all eyes on the two cousins.

Lin Fang's face was a mask of shock and disbelief. He had been bested, and by the one he had underestimated the most. Lin Yi, however, felt no satisfaction in his victory. He knew that this was not the end, but merely the beginning of a long journey.

He stepped back, sheathing his sword. "We are not enemies, cousin," he said, his voice steady. "We are both warriors of the Lin family."

Lin Fang's expression hardened, but he made no move to retaliate. He knew that Lin Yi spoke the truth. They were both products of the same blood, bound by ties that could not be severed by jealousy or rivalry.

Lin Hai stepped forward, clapping Lin Yi on the back. "Well done, brother," he said, his voice filled with pride. "You've shown great control and strength."

Lin Yi nodded, his gaze meeting Lin Fang's. He could see the anger and resentment in his cousin's eyes, but also a flicker of respect. He knew that this was just the first step in a long journey, one that would test him in ways he could not yet imagine.

As the day ended, Lin Yi stood alone in the courtyard, the sun casting long shadows around him. He could feel the energy within him, a constant presence that hummed in the background of his awareness. He knew that he had a long way to go, that he would face many challenges and obstacles.

But he was ready. With the support of his brother and the power of the ancient ring, he was ready to face whatever the future held.
