Chapter 1 - Another Round

I sat staring at nothing in particular, my eyes fixed on some point in front of me. It was about time. Finally, I can go back. This time I have made it through to the fifth day – two days longer than the last. But this is the last time, I will make it through to the end.

I opened my eyes again.

Every time I die I go back to the day before the first level starts. I remember everything that occurred in the previous life, every person, every injury, every decision.

This is the third time I have woken up on this subway, and I am tired, I want to quit, to give up, but I can not. There are too many people I have to save.

The subway had come to a stop with a loud screech, throwing me forward in my seat.

This was it; there was no time to lose.

In one day I had to accumulate as many coins as I could. The rifts would open soon dropping coins and people would go crazy.

But I had the advantage, I knew where all the rifts would be opening, I knew where to get the coins I just had to be fast.

I needed 100 coins.

The first rift would appear at the entrance of the Central Library that one would only drop 15 coins.

I leapt off the subway and ran through the tide of people then took the stairs. The library wasn't far – just two miles and I had 15 minutes.

Like tiny, fiery meteors, coins appeared to be coming down from the sky.

The first three landed near me and I dove for each one, grabbing them from the air before anyone else could.

On the other side of me, people stared at the hole in the sky, their faces a combination of awe and terror.

They didn't know what these coins meant, and they didn't realize yet.

One man grabbed one that had landed near him and one woman stretched out for another. Two gone. The last ten coins dropped, spilling to the ground.

I dived and scooped up as many as I could.

By the time I was finished, I had eight coins. A pretty good beginning, but not nearly good enough.

I spotted him in the crowd.

He stood there, looking at me with a combination of curiosity and suspicion. The two of us locked eyes and for a moment, everything came to a standstill.

Then he turned and started to walk away.

I yelled out, "Wait!" My voice cut through the noise.

He paused, looking back over his shoulder. His face said nothing, but I knew this was my chance. I wasn't going to let him walk away this time. Not this time.
