Chapter 35 - Chapter 35: Breaking Barriers

The days after their compromise felt lighter, but both Lin Yue and Zhang Wei knew that the work wasn't over. They had learned how to balance their professional and personal lives for the moment, but the real test was maintaining that balance over time. As their business grew and their relationship deepened, they would face new obstacles—obstacles that tested their commitment not just to their dreams but to each other.

That's exactly what Lin Yue was thinking as she walked through the bustling streets of the city, heading to a meeting with a new client. Her mind raced with thoughts of the future. It was clear that the partnership they had built was strong, but what would happen when the stakes were higher? What if one of them needed to sacrifice more than the other?

She was jolted from her thoughts by a familiar voice calling her name. Turning, she found herself face-to-face with an old colleague from her previous job.

"Lin Yue! It's been ages," the woman exclaimed, grinning widely. "How have you been?"

"Yao Mei," Lin Yue said with a smile. "I didn't expect to see you here. I'm doing well, just busy with some new projects."

They chatted briefly, catching up on old times, and Lin Yue found herself laughing at Yao Mei's stories. But as the conversation progressed, Yao Mei's expression shifted.

"So," Yao Mei said, lowering her voice, "I heard you and Zhang Wei are starting a business together. Is it true?"

Lin Yue nodded, her heart swelling with pride. "Yes, it's true. We've been working really hard to make it happen."

Yao Mei's smile faded just a little, her gaze shifting to the ground. "You know, I've always thought you were too driven, Lin Yue. I mean, you're brilliant, no doubt, but is this really the life you want? All that pressure, all that competition? It can't be easy."

Lin Yue blinked, taken aback by the sudden shift in tone. She had always known that people had different views on ambition, but Yao Mei's words stung more than she had anticipated. Was she questioning her choices? Did she think Lin Yue wasn't cut out for this life?

Before Lin Yue could respond, Yao Mei added, "I just don't want to see you burn out, you know?"

For a moment, Lin Yue felt a knot form in her stomach. She had heard these kinds of words before, from well-meaning friends and family who worried about her relentless pursuit of success. But what they didn't understand was that it wasn't about the pressure—it was about the passion she felt for her work, the shared vision with Zhang Wei.

"I appreciate your concern, Yao Mei," Lin Yue said, her voice steady. "But this is the path I've chosen. And it's the one I'm walking because I believe in it. Believe in us."

Yao Mei's eyes softened, though a trace of skepticism remained. "Just be careful, okay?"

Lin Yue watched her walk away, a lingering unease settling in her chest. It wasn't the first time someone had questioned her path, but this encounter made her realize just how much pressure she was under—not just from her work, but from the expectations others had of her. Expectations she was struggling to meet while staying true to herself.

Later that evening, as Lin Yue sat across from Zhang Wei at their favorite dinner spot, she couldn't shake the feeling of unease. She had never been one to let the opinions of others affect her, but something about Yao Mei's words had lingered.

Zhang Wei noticed her quiet demeanor and raised an eyebrow. "What's on your mind?"

Lin Yue hesitated before speaking. "I ran into an old colleague today, Yao Mei. We were catching up, and… she made a comment. She said I was too driven, that I might burn out if I kept going this way."

Zhang Wei's expression softened with understanding. "And what do you think about that?"

Lin Yue took a deep breath. "I don't know. I've always pushed myself because I believe in what we're doing, in our future. But sometimes, I can't help but wonder if I'm taking on too much. What if she's right? What if I'm so focused on the business that I forget to take care of myself?"

Zhang Wei reached across the table, taking her hand in his. "I don't think you're taking on too much, Lin Yue. I think you're chasing something important. But if you ever feel overwhelmed, you don't have to do it alone. We're in this together."

Lin Yue's heart warmed at his words. She knew he believed in her, in their shared vision. But the pressure she felt was still there, and sometimes it felt impossible to escape.

"I just don't want to disappoint anyone," she whispered. "I want to make sure we succeed, but I also don't want to lose myself in the process."

Zhang Wei's eyes softened, and he gave her hand a reassuring squeeze. "You won't lose yourself, Lin Yue. But we have to make sure we're always checking in with each other. If you're feeling this way, I want to know. We'll find a way to make it work."

It was a simple gesture, but it meant the world to Lin Yue. It reminded her that she wasn't alone in this journey. They were partners, not just in business, but in life. And together, they would find a way to navigate the challenges, the pressures, and the doubts.

The next few days were filled with work, but Lin Yue found herself more centered than before. She had a renewed sense of purpose, not because she had all the answers, but because she knew she didn't have to have them alone.

One evening, after a particularly successful pitch meeting, Zhang Wei surprised her by taking her out to the city's most beautiful rooftop restaurant. The soft glow of the city lights, the hum of conversation around them—it felt like the perfect escape from the chaos of their daily lives.

"You know," Zhang Wei said as they clinked their glasses together, "sometimes I forget to appreciate the small moments. It's easy to get caught up in the big picture, but these little moments with you… they remind me of why I'm doing all of this."

Lin Yue smiled, her heart full. "I feel the same way."

They sat in comfortable silence for a moment, watching the world unfold beneath them. The future was uncertain, full of challenges and triumphs alike. But for the first time, Lin Yue didn't feel weighed down by the unknown. She felt ready to face it, to break through the barriers with Zhang Wei by her side.
