Chapter 12 - The Web of lies

"Don't be annoyed by what Sarafina did," Solana reassured Caleb. "She's just been acting strange lately." She pretended to care, then added, "But if anything goes wrong, you can always come to me."

Caleb sighed. "You're such a great friend. She took the wallet and framed you, yet you still stand by her side. She's lucky to have us both."

Solana tucked that thought away. Caleb had never truly trusted Sarafina—he had even sided with her instead of his girlfriend. She knew she could use this to her advantage.

Sarafina needed to clear her mind after the earlier incident. She wasn't surprised—after all, in her past life, Solana had played a part in her death. So this is nothing new, she thought.

Sophie handed her a drink. "You should relax," she said gently.

"You're my superior, but... can I ask? Why do you keep her as a friend?" Sophie hesitated.

Sarafina forced a smile. "She's just been acting out," she replied vaguely. She had no intention of sharing her life story with anyone. Too many people had betrayed her—first her uncle, then her so-called husband, and now her best friend. I can't bear to trust anyone else.

"Thank you for the drink and your concern," she finally said.

Sophie sensed something was wrong but chose not to press further.

"Shall we?" she asked, leading the way.

They both walked through the office hall.

Meanwhile, in the restroom, Solana stared at her reflection, deep in thought. She knew Sarafina wouldn't trust or tolerate her anymore after today. But I haven't achieved my mission yet. She clenched her fists. I want Sarafina to lose everything. Everything that should have been mine.

If apologizing and playing innocent would fix things, she was willing to do it. She washed her face, applied makeup, lipstick, and deodorant, then left.

Later, in the elevator, Solana and Caleb found themselves squeezed together in the crowded space. The close proximity made their heartbeats almost audible. Caleb tried to avoid her gaze, but he couldn't ignore how stunning she looked.

As people gradually exited, Solana remained close, using the moment to her advantage. Caleb didn't move away, nor did he complain. She smirked. He likes it.

"What's your formula?" she suddenly asked, her voice soft. "I mean... your body deodorant?"

Caleb chuckled and pulled her slightly closer. By now, the elevator had emptied, leaving only the two of them.

Sarafina had finished her work for the day and headed toward the elevator. When the doors slid open, she saw them—standing apart now, but the atmosphere felt off. I know exactly what's going on.

She smiled as she stepped inside. "How was your day?" she asked casually.

Caleb's expression darkened. Without a word, he walked out.

Solana turned to Sarafina with feigned innocence. "Are you mad at me?" she asked.

Sarafina looked at her, unable to suppress her frustration. I can't keep pretending I don't see her true motives anymore.

"I'm so sorry," Solana suddenly declared, her voice trembling. "I just realized my wallet was still in my car. I would never try to harm or frame you! You're my family. I don't know why you've been so distant lately."

Sarafina just stared at her. She never stops lying. She never stops hurting me.

Her mind flashed back to all the times Solana had apologized—including the last time, right before her death.

"You wouldn't do anything to harm me?" Sarafina scoffed. "I trusted you… I can't bear the humiliation."

Solana smiled slightly, sensing Sarafina's frustration. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to."

Sarafina let out a deep breath before replying, "It's fine. I accept your apology."

Solana smirked inwardly. She's still the same naive Sarafina. So easy to deceive.

She flashed a bright smile. "Thank you, sis."

"Should I drop you off?" she offered sweetly.

Sarafina shook her head. "No, I have plans for tonight." Without another word, she walked away, leaving Solana behind.
