As the day to leave Hastinapur approached, Karna and Vrushali spent their time cherishing every moment with their family. They helped Radha and Adhiratha with household chores, savoring the warm, homely atmosphere they would soon leave behind. After lunch one afternoon, Karna and Vrushali decided to visit the bustling marketplace to gather the supplies needed for their journey.
The Marketplace
The market was alive with vibrant colors, the clamor of merchants, and the hum of shoppers bargaining for goods. Karna and Vrushali moved through the crowd, their list in hand.
Vrushali:
"Karna, what all do we need for the journey?"
Karna (checking the list):
"Food rations that will last, a water pouch, flint stones for fire, and some durable clothes for travel. We'll also need a small first aid kit and extra rope—it's always handy."
Vrushali (nodding):
"And don't forget blankets. The nights might be cold, especially if we're traveling through forests or mountains."
They moved through the market, buying everything they needed. After finishing their shopping, the two of them began making their way back home through the narrow streets, the weight of their bags reminding them of the journey ahead.
As they walked side by side, the sounds of the bustling marketplace grew fainter, leaving only the soft rustle of the wind and the distant calls of merchants behind them. The sky above them shifted to golden hues as the sun began its descent, casting long shadows across the ground.
Karna:
"Vrushali, there's something I want to give you."
Vrushali (raising an eyebrow):
"What is it, Radheya?"
Karna reached into his bag and pulled out the pair of earrings he had bought earlier. He held them out to her, his expression soft but earnest.
Karna:
"These are for you. You're coming with me on this journey, leaving behind your home and family, just so I don't feel alone. I don't know how to thank you enough for that, but I wanted to give you something meaningful."
Vrushali stared at the earrings, her eyes widening in surprise.
Vrushali (smiling, touched):
"Radheya, these are beautiful. But you didn't have to—"
Karna (interrupting):
"I wanted to. You've always been by my side, and I can't imagine this journey without you. These earrings reminded me of you—the strength and grace you carry. Please, take them."
Vrushali accepted the earrings, her heart swelling with gratitude.
Vrushali (softly):
"Thank you, Radheya. I'll treasure these always."
The two walked the rest of the way home, the bond between them growing stronger with every step.
At Home
Karna and Vrushali helped Radha with household tasks, ensuring everything was in order before their departure. Over dinner, the family discussed their plans and the journey ahead.
Adhiratha:
"You'll need a guru who can teach you the art of warfare and strategy. Have you thought about where you'll go first?"
Karna:
"We were thinking of starting with the renowned gurus in the nearby kingdoms. Do you have any suggestions, Baba?"
Adhiratha (thoughtfully):
"There's no better teacher than Guru Dronacharya. He's a master in weapons and warfare, and his knowledge is unrivaled. He is highly respected throughout the land."
Karna:
Where can we find him?
Adhiratha:
"I'll ask Mahamahim Bhishma about his whereabouts. Bhishma and Dronacharya are acquainted, and Bhishma's brother, Kripacharya, is brother-in-law of Dronacharya. He will know where Dronacharya resides."
The conversation shifted as they finished their meal, and Adhiratha promised to gather the necessary information before their departure.
Blessings at the Temple
On the day of Karna's birthday, the family visited the temple to seek blessings from Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, and Lakshmi Narayana. As they were about to leave, the temple priest stopped them.
Priest:
"Radheya, before you embark on this journey, you must visit the temple of Devi Saraswati to seek her blessings. She is the goddess of wisdom, and her grace will guide you on your path."
The family exchanged confused glances, wondering at the coincidence. Nevertheless, they made their way to the temple of Devi Saraswati. The serene atmosphere filled their hearts with peace as they prayed for wisdom and strength.
That evening, after returning home, Radha tied a protective thread around Karna's wrist, her hands trembling slightly.
Radha (softly):
"This thread will keep you safe, my son. No matter where you go, know that my blessings are always with you."
Adhiratha handed Karna and Vrushali their weapons—swords, bows, and arrows that he had carefully preserved for years.
Adhiratha:
"These weapons will serve you well. Treat them with respect, and they will never fail you. And about Dronacharya—I spoke with Bhishma. He resides in his ashram near the kingdom of Panchala. Start your journey there."
The warmth of the household enveloped them that night, and Karna fell asleep in his mother's lap, cherishing the last moments of comfort before the dawn of a new chapter in his life.
The next morning, as the sun rose, Karna and Vrushali prepared to leave. Their horses were saddled and ready, courtesy of Adhiratha.
Radha (smiling through her sadness):
"Go, my children. May the gods guide you and keep you safe."
Karna hugged his mother tightly, whispering promises to return. Vrushali stepped forward and touched Radha ma's feet, receiving her blessings.
As they rode away, Radha watched them until they disappeared from sight. Finally, unable to hold back her emotions, she broke into tears.
Adhiratha (placing a comforting hand on her shoulder):
"They'll return, Radha. Stronger, wiser, and ready to face the world. Trust in our Radheya."
With those words, the couple stood together, their hearts heavy yet filled with hope, as their children embarked on their journey into the unknown.
