The waters of the Shattered Shoals churned with unnatural energy as the Vanguard cut through the thick fog. The silence was oppressive, broken only by the rhythmic hum of steam engines and the occasional creak of the ship's hull. The fleet—three Steam-Magic Destroyers and the Combat Airship Eclipse—moved in perfect formation, their crews prepared for the inevitable clash.
On the bridge of the Vanguard, Aedric stood calm and composed, his sharp gaze fixed on the map table displaying the fleet's position. The enchanted map shimmered, updating in real-time as magical beacons placed by the Whalefolk revealed more of the Shoals' treacherous layout. Jagged reefs and hidden currents were marked in crimson, while faint outlines of enemy ships began to appear on the periphery.
"Captain Darius," Aedric said, his voice low but commanding. "Position the destroyers into a staggered formation. They'll expect a standard wedge; we'll give them something less predictable."
Darius saluted. "Aye, my lord. Relay the orders!"
The crew moved swiftly, adjusting the fleet's formation. The destroyers split into a staggered line, with the Eclipse hovering above and slightly behind, its cannons angled downward to cover the ships below. Aedric's plan was clear: maintain flexibility while leveraging superior firepower and vertical advantage.
The first sign of the Black Tide came not from the horizon but from beneath the waves. A lookout shouted, "Enemy movement below, my lord! Something large!"
Aedric's eyes narrowed. "So they've prepared an ambush. Good."
The waters ahead erupted as massive chains rose from the depths, each link the size of a man. The chains formed a barrier, blocking the fleet's advance. At the same time, dozens of pirate ships burst from the fog, their cannons already firing. Explosions ripped through the air as cannonballs slammed into the water around the Vanguard.
"Raise shields!" Aedric barked.
The Arcane Generator within the destroyers hummed to life, projecting shimmering barriers of magical energy that absorbed the initial barrage. Still, the Black Tide's fleet was larger than anticipated—at least thirty ships, their crude designs reinforced with jagged metal and stolen enchantments.
From the deck of the largest pirate ship, a hulking vessel adorned with blackened steel and spikes, a figure emerged. Cain Dreadmoor, the self-proclaimed Pirate King, was a towering man with wild hair and a coat made from the hides of monstrous sea beasts. He raised a fist, and his booming voice carried across the battlefield.
"You dare challenge the Black Tide?! You'll find nothing here but death and despair!"
Aedric smirked, unshaken by the theatrics. He turned to Darius. "Let him shout. He's already lost."
Aedric's mind worked rapidly, calculating the battlefield like a chessboard. "Destroyers, target the chains anchoring that barrier. Use enchanted shells to break them apart. Airship, engage their flanking vessels and provide cover fire."
The fleet sprang into action. The Vanguard's cannons roared, firing glowing shells that struck the massive chains with precision. Each hit sent shockwaves through the water, and cracks began to appear in the metal. The Eclipse swooped down, its turrets spraying arcs of fire that forced smaller pirate ships to scatter.
But the Black Tide retaliated fiercely. Their ships swarmed like predatory fish, using their superior numbers to encircle the Vandemir fleet. Cannons thundered, and several enemy vessels attempted to ram the destroyers, only to be repelled by the arcane shields.
"Release the mines!" Aedric ordered.
Hatches opened on the destroyers, releasing floating mines infused with magical energy. As the pirate ships closed in, the mines detonated in bursts of fire and lightning, ripping through their hulls and sending debris flying.
Still, the battle was far from over. Cain Dreadmoor's flagship, a monstrous ship known as The Reaper, charged forward, its prow reinforced with an enchanted ram designed to shatter even the strongest defenses.
"My lord, they're targeting the Vanguard!" Darius shouted.
Aedric's eyes gleamed with determination. "Let them come. Prepare the harpoon cannons."
As The Reaper closed the distance, the Vanguard's crew fired their harpoon cannons. Massive bolts, tipped with arcane explosives, shot out and embedded themselves in the enemy flagship's hull. With a flick of his hand, Aedric activated Gravity Manipulation, pulling the harpoons taut and forcing The Reaper to tilt violently.
"Now, fire the main cannons!"
The Vanguard unleashed a devastating salvo, targeting the weakened side of The Reaper. The enchanted shells pierced its armor, causing explosions that rocked the massive ship.
Dreadmoor, undeterred, roared orders to his crew. "Board them! Take the Vanguard by force!"
Dozens of grappling hooks shot across the gap, latching onto the Vanguard's deck. Pirates swarmed over the lines, weapons drawn, but Aedric was ready.
"Guards, to the deck!" he commanded, drawing his own blade—a weapon forged from both steel and magic, its edge glowing faintly.
The deck erupted into chaos as Vandemir's guards clashed with the pirates. Aedric moved like a phantom, his Phantom Strike Flow technique allowing him to blur across the battlefield. He cut through enemies with calculated precision, his blade flashing in deadly arcs. When a group of pirates tried to flank him, he conjured a wall of fire with Elemental Conjuration, forcing them back into the waiting blades of his guards.
Amid the chaos, Dreadmoor himself leapt onto the deck, wielding a massive axe crackling with dark energy. He towered over the battlefield, cutting through guards with brutal efficiency.
"You think you can take my seas, Sovereign?!" he bellowed, locking eyes with Aedric.
Aedric stepped forward, his expression cold. "Your reign ends here."
The two clashed, their weapons colliding with a burst of energy that sent shockwaves across the deck. Dreadmoor was strong, his strikes heavy and relentless, but Aedric was faster, his movements precise and unpredictable.
As they fought, Aedric's mind raced. He could feel the Dominion System offering new options, feeding him insights into the battlefield. With a surge of focus, he activated Arcane Blueprint Projection, summoning an enchanted ballista on the deck.
"Darius, fire the ballista!" Aedric shouted, disengaging from Dreadmoor and leaping back.
The ballista fired, its bolt piercing Dreadmoor's armor and pinning him to the mast. The Pirate King roared in defiance, but it was too late. Aedric approached, his blade glowing with arcane energy.
"This is for the lives you've taken," Aedric said, plunging the blade into Dreadmoor's chest.
With Dreadmoor's death, the remaining pirates panicked and fled. The Vanguard's cannons picked off the stragglers, and the Black Tide fleet was utterly destroyed. The waters of the Shoals were littered with debris, the air heavy with the scent of smoke and salt.
Aedric stood on the deck of the Vanguard, surveying the aftermath. Around him, his soldiers and crew tended to the wounded and secured prisoners. Among the captives were skilled shipwrights, engineers, and navigators—valuable assets for Vandemir's growing navy.
As the fleet returned to Vandemir, Aedric felt a surge of energy from the Dominion System. A notification appeared before him.
