Chapter 3 - Chapter Three: The days starting

As Max finished his breakfast, the system lit up in his vision with another notification, drawing his attention away from the now-empty plate in front of him.

Daily Challenge Updated:

Name: Small Steps, Big Gains

Objective: Perform a basic workout (10 push-ups, 10 squats, 10 sit-ups).

Reward: +2 Strength, +1 Endurance

Max leaned back in his chair, staring at the challenge. The soreness in his chest reminded him of yesterday's push-ups, but the thought of earning more strength was tempting.

Before he could overthink it, his mom's voice broke the silence. "Max, don't forget you've got school in an hour."

"Yeah, I know," he called back. Glancing at the clock, he realized he still had time to knock out this challenge before getting ready.

"Let's do this," he muttered, pushing back his chair and heading to the living room.

He dropped to the floor, setting up for push-ups. The first few were rough—his muscles protested with each rep, but he grit his teeth and powered through, counting under his breath.

"Nine… ten." He collapsed onto the carpet, breathing hard. "Okay… one down."

After a few seconds to catch his breath, he rolled onto his back for sit-ups. These weren't much easier—his core burned as he struggled to lift himself off the ground, but he managed to complete the set.

Finally, he stood up for squats, his legs still stiff from his morning walk. "Come on, Max," he muttered, bracing himself. "Just ten."

He went down into the first squat, wobbly but determined. By the time he hit the tenth one, he was sweating, but the system chimed softly in his vision.

Challenge Completed: Small Steps, Big Gains!

Reward: +2 Strength, +1 Endurance

Strength: 2 → 4

Endurance: 1 → 2

Max grinned as the familiar warmth flowed through him, this time concentrating in his arms, chest, and legs. He could already feel the difference—like his body was waking up after years of being on autopilot.

His mom walked into the room, looking at him with mild confusion. "Are you… doing squats in the living room?"

Max wiped the sweat from his brow and gave her a sheepish smile. "Uh, yeah. Just… trying to stay active."

She tilted her head, a small smile tugging at her lips. "Well, keep it up. I'm proud of you, Max."

"Thanks, Mom," he said, his voice genuine.

As she headed back to the kitchen, Max leaned against the couch, catching his breath. He still had a long way to go, but for the first time, he felt like he was on the right path.

System Alert:

New Feature Unlocked: Progress Journal

Track your daily achievements, progress, and goals to stay motivated.

Max opened the new menu, finding a simple interface with logs for each day. It showed his completed challenges, stats, and even a graph tracking his progress.

"Man," he muttered, scrolling through it. "This thing really thought of everything."

He glanced at the time and realized he needed to hurry if he didn't want to be late for school. Grabbing his bag, he headed upstairs to shower and change, already feeling the day's momentum building.

Today was different. Today, he felt like he was finally in control.

After a quick shower, Max stepped out of the bathroom, towel slung over his shoulder as beads of water dripped from his curls. The cool air in his room sent a shiver down his spine, but his thoughts were elsewhere.

He glanced at the corner of his room, where an old digital scale sat collecting dust. Normally, he avoided stepping on it—seeing the number always felt like a slap in the face, a reminder of how far behind he was.

But today was different.

Taking a deep breath, Max pulled the scale out with his foot, setting it on the flat floor. He hesitated for a moment, staring at the device as if it might judge him. Then, with a determined exhale, he stepped on.

The scale beeped, and the number appeared on the screen.

295.8 lbs.

Max blinked, leaning down to make sure he wasn't imagining things. "No way…"

He stepped off the scale, then back on again. The same number popped up.

System Notification:

Congratulations!

You've completed an untracked milestone: First 5 Pounds Lost!

Reward: +1 Confidence Boost, Progress Visualization Update

Max felt a strange mix of emotions—shock, excitement, and maybe even a little disbelief. Five pounds? Already? He hadn't even done that much yet. Sure, he'd gone on a walk and done some push-ups, but losing weight that fast felt surreal.

The system pinged again, and a holographic window appeared in front of him.

Progress Visualizer Update:

You've lost your first milestone weight! Here's a preview of how your physique could look with continued effort.

A three-dimensional image of himself appeared, but it wasn't quite him. This version of Max was still big, but his face looked slimmer, and his shoulders seemed broader, more defined. His stomach, while still large, didn't hang as much, and there was a hint of muscle in his arms.

Max stared at the image, his breath catching in his throat. It wasn't some distant, impossible dream—this looked achievable.

He clenched his fists, a small, determined smile creeping onto his face. "Alright… let's keep this going."

Max grabbed his phone and backpack, tossing on some clothes before heading downstairs. His mom called out as he passed the kitchen. "You eating before school?"

"Already ate!" he said over his shoulder, a new spring in his step as he walked out the door.

For the first time in a long time, Max felt like he was moving forward. The system was helping him see progress he'd never believed possible, and now, he wasn't going to stop until he hit every goal on his list.

Max pulled into the school parking lot, sliding into a spot near the back. As he stepped out of the car, he adjusted his hoodie, making sure it covered him just right. The weight of his backpack felt heavier than usual, but maybe that was just his imagination.

The familiar sights and sounds of the school grounds greeted him—clusters of students chatting near the entrance, the faint sound of sneakers squeaking on the gym floor, and the dull hum of the bell signaling there were just a few minutes left to get to class.

He walked toward the main building, keeping his head down and his pace quick. Max wasn't exactly one to hang around the hallways socializing. It was easier to slip into the background and avoid attention altogether.

His first class of the day was history, and as he pushed open the door, the low buzz of student chatter greeted him. Most of the seats were already filled, and the teacher, Mr. Crawford, was at his desk, flipping through some papers.

Max made his way to his usual spot near the back, sliding into the chair and setting his bag on the floor. He pulled out his notebook and pen, ready to tune into whatever lecture Mr. Crawford had planned.

As he settled in, a notification popped up in the corner of his vision, subtle enough that no one else could see.

System Alert:

Daily Goal Updated:

Stay Focused in Class

Objective: Pay attention and take notes for at least 30 minutes.

Reward: +1 Mental Discipline, +1 Confidence

Max smirked to himself. "Alright, system," he muttered under his breath, "guess you're keeping me on my toes everywhere, huh?"

A familiar voice broke him from his thoughts. "Hey, Max."

He looked up to see Zoe, the girl who sat in front of him. Her bright red hair was pulled back into a messy ponytail, and she had that same warm smile she always wore.

"Morning, Zoe," Max said, his voice low.

"You alright? You look… different today," she said, tilting her head as she studied him.

"Different how?" Max asked, trying not to sound self-conscious.

"I dunno. You just seem… I don't know, lighter," she said with a shrug. "Maybe you got more sleep or something."

"Maybe," he said, forcing a small smile. He wasn't about to start explaining the system to her.

Before she could press further, Mr. Crawford stood up and cleared his throat. "Alright, everyone, settle down. Let's pick up where we left off yesterday—World War II and its aftermath."

Max focused on the lecture, jotting down notes as Mr. Crawford spoke. He wasn't sure if it was the system or the fact that he'd started the day strong, but for the first time in a while, he found it easier to pay attention.

By the time the 30 minutes had passed, another notification appeared.

Goal Completed: Stay Focused in Class

Reward: +1 Mental Discipline, +1 Confidence

Mental Discipline: 1 → 2

Confidence: 2 → 3

The system's gentle ping brought a small smile to his face. It was subtle, but he could feel a difference already.

Maybe today really was going to be a good day.

Max's stomach sank as the bell rang, signaling the end of history class. Gym was next, and today was weightlifting day.

He slung his backpack over his shoulder and shuffled into the hall, weaving through the crowd of students. Normally, he hated weightlifting day—it was just another opportunity to feel out of place. The guys who actually worked out would throw around weights like it was nothing, while Max struggled with the bar, feeling every pair of eyes in the room on him.

But as he made his way to the locker room, a small notification popped up in the corner of his vision.

System Alert:

New Challenge Unlocked: Lift the Load

Objective: Complete a full set of bench press, deadlifts, and dumbbell curls.

Reward: +3 Strength, +2 Confidence

Max paused mid-step, his heart racing. "Full sets?" he muttered to himself. The system wasn't pulling any punches, but… could he actually do it?

He reached the locker room and quickly changed into his gym clothes. The shirt he wore stretched uncomfortably across his chest, but he ignored it. Today, he was determined to prove something—to himself, if no one else.

When he entered the weight room, the sound of clanging metal and low grunts filled the air. Groups of students had already split off to different stations, and Coach Harris stood near the center, clipboard in hand.

"Alright, listen up!" Coach Harris called out, his booming voice silencing the chatter. "Today, we're focusing on the basics. Bench press, deadlifts, and curls. You'll rotate through each station. I want proper form—don't let me catch anyone slacking!"

Max headed toward the bench press first, where a group of guys was already taking turns. As he stood to the side, one of them, Kevin, smirked at him.

"Hey, Max, you need a spotter for the bar?" Kevin joked, earning a few chuckles from the others.

Max clenched his jaw but didn't respond. Instead, he stepped up to the bench once they cleared out.

He set the bar with no added weight and took a deep breath. "Alright, system," he whispered, gripping the cold metal, "let's do this."

System Hint:

Focus on form over weight. Perfect form increases efficiency and prevents injury.

Max adjusted his grip, planting his feet firmly on the ground. He unracked the bar and lowered it slowly, feeling the strain in his chest and arms. His muscles burned, but he powered through, pressing the bar back up.

"One… two…" he muttered under his breath, keeping his rhythm steady.

By the time he finished his set of ten, his arms felt like jelly, but the system chimed softly.

Bench Press Complete!

Max sat up, catching his breath. Kevin gave him a mock round of applause, but Max ignored it. He wasn't here for them—this was for him.

Next, he moved to the deadlift station. He stared at the barbell, the plates stacked on either side.

"Okay, just focus," he told himself.

He planted his feet shoulder-width apart, gripping the bar tightly. The system chimed again.

System Hint:

Activate your legs and core for maximum power.

With a grunt, Max pulled the bar up, his whole body straining as he locked his hips at the top. He set it down carefully, then repeated the motion. By the fifth rep, his legs were shaking, but he pushed through the last one.

Deadlift Complete!

Finally, he moved to the dumbbell rack for curls. He picked a lighter weight, knowing his arms were already exhausted. The first few reps were manageable, but by the tenth, his biceps felt like they were on fire.

When he finished, he dropped the weights onto the rack, leaning against it to catch his breath.

Challenge Complete: Lift the Load!

Reward: +3 Strength, +2 Confidence

Strength: 4 → 7

Confidence: 3 → 5

Max felt the familiar warmth of the system's boost spread through his body. His arms didn't feel quite as sore, and he noticed a subtle but definite increase in his energy.

Coach Harris walked by, nodding at him. "Good work, Tate. Keep it up."

Max's chest swelled with a hint of pride. As he headed to the next station, he realized he wasn't dreading the rest of class anymore. For the first time, he felt like he belonged here, like maybe he had what it took to keep up.
