Chapter 1 - The betrayal

Chapter 1: The Betrayal

Elena's heart raced as she hurried to the meadow, clutching a small box wrapped in silver ribbon. The late afternoon sunlight bathed the grassy expanse in a golden glow, and she smiled at the sight of the oak tree where she and Lucas had spent so many afternoons together. Today was Lucas's 18th birthday—a day they had both been anticipating for years.

For as long as Elena could remember, Lucas had been her anchor. They'd grown up together, shared dreams of their future, and whispered promises about the day they'd finally confirm what they already knew deep in their hearts: they were destined for each other.

"Elena!" Lucas's familiar voice called out, breaking her reverie. He stood under the oak tree, his tall frame silhouetted against the sunlight, his blond hair tousled by the breeze.

Elena's smile widened. "Happy birthday!" she said, holding out the box.

Lucas hesitated before taking it, his lips curving into a smile that didn't quite reach his blue eyes. "Thanks," he murmured, his voice softer than usual.

Before Elena could ask what was wrong, another voice interrupted. "There you are!"

Elena turned to see Mira running toward them, her auburn curls bouncing as she moved. Mira was beautiful in an effortless way—bright eyes, perfect skin, and a charm that made people gravitate toward her. She had been Elena's best friend for years, a sister in all but blood.

Elena's stomach churned as Mira slid an arm through Lucas's. Something about the gesture felt… wrong. But Mira had always been touchy, hadn't she? She was just being Mira.

"I was wondering where you ran off to," Mira said, her voice light and teasing. She glanced at the gift in Lucas's hands and raised an eyebrow. "Oh, is that from Elena? How sweet."

Lucas shifted uncomfortably, and Elena's smile faltered. "Is everything okay?" she asked, her gaze flicking between them.

"Of course!" Mira said brightly, her grin sharp enough to cut. "Why wouldn't it be?"

Elena forced herself to nod, brushing off the unease creeping into her chest. Today was supposed to be perfect, and she wouldn't let her insecurities ruin it.

That evening, the entire pack gathered in the clearing for Lucas's coming-of-age ceremony. The air buzzed with excitement, and Elena stood among the crowd, her heart pounding in anticipation. The ritual to reveal one's fated mate was sacred, a moment that defined the rest of their lives.

Elena's hand brushed the necklace she wore—a simple silver chain with a tiny crescent moon pendant. Lucas had given it to her on her 16th birthday, promising that one day, the Moon Goddess would confirm what they already knew.

Her chest swelled with hope as the Alpha stepped forward, his deep voice commanding the attention of the pack. Lucas stood beside him, his expression solemn. The moonlight bathed the clearing, casting an ethereal glow over the gathered wolves.

"Lucas Kane," the Alpha intoned, "tonight, under the gaze of the Moon Goddess, you will discover your destined mate. Step forward and accept her blessing."

Lucas took a deep breath and extended his arm, his wrist bared to the moonlight. A hush fell over the crowd as everyone watched, waiting for the mark to appear.

When it did, a shimmering crescent moon etched itself onto Lucas's wrist, glowing with an otherworldly light. The crowd gasped as Lucas's head snapped up, his eyes wide. He turned slowly, his gaze locking onto someone in the crowd.

Elena's heart soared. This was it—this was their moment. But then she realized Lucas wasn't looking at her.

He was looking at Mira.

A stunned silence fell over the clearing as Mira stepped forward, her lips curling into a triumphant smile. The mark on Lucas's wrist flared brighter as Mira raised her arm, revealing an identical mark on her own wrist.

"No," Elena whispered, her voice barely audible over the murmurs spreading through the crowd. Her legs felt like they might give out beneath her. "That's not possible."

Mira turned to face Elena, her expression dripping with mock sympathy. "I guess the Moon Goddess had other plans," she said, her tone saccharine.

Elena's gaze darted to Lucas, searching for answers. He looked back at her, guilt flickering in his eyes before his jaw tightened. "Elena, I—"

"You lied to me," Elena choked out, her voice trembling. "You said we were meant to be. You promised—"

"I thought we were," Lucas interrupted, his tone sharp and defensive. "But fate doesn't work like that. Mira is my fated mate. You have to understand—"

"I don't have to understand anything!" Elena snapped, tears streaming down her face. The weight of their betrayal pressed down on her chest, making it hard to breathe.

Mira stepped closer to Lucas, her hand resting possessively on his arm. "Don't make this harder than it needs to be, Elena. You'll find someone else. Someone… more suited to you."

Elena staggered back, her world crumbling around her. The whispers of the crowd grew louder, their pitying gazes cutting into her like knives.

As the pack dispersed, Elena lingered in the shadows, unable to tear herself away. She watched as Lucas and Mira laughed together, their voices carrying on the cool night air.

"She's so pathetic," Mira sneered, her voice laced with venom. "Did she really think she could hold onto you forever?"

"She was comfortable," Lucas admitted, shrugging. "But that's all it ever was. I stayed because I felt sorry for her."

Elena's breath hitched, and something inside her shattered. The necklace around her neck suddenly felt like a chain, a cruel reminder of everything she had lost.

Without thinking, she tore it off and let it fall to the ground. Then, before anyone could notice her, she turned and ran.

The forest loomed ahead, its shadows stretching like claws under the moonlight. Elena's feet pounded against the ground as she pushed herself forward, branches snagging at her clothes and whipping against her skin. She didn't know where she was going—she just needed to get away.

Her chest burned, and her vision blurred with tears, but she didn't stop. The betrayal replayed in her mind, each word cutting deeper than the last.

"She was comfortable."

"I stayed because I felt sorry for her."

Elena stumbled, her foot catching on a root. She fell to her knees, the impact jarring her bones. For a moment, she stayed there, trembling and gasping for air.

"I can't… I can't go back," she whispered to herself.

The sound of rustling leaves snapped her out of her thoughts. She looked up, her blood running cold as she realized she had crossed the pack's border.

And she wasn't alone.

A pair of glowing eyes appeared in the darkness, followed by another, and another. Wolves—massive and menacing—emerged from the shadows, their snarls echoing through the forest.

Elena's heart raced as she scrambled to her feet, but it was too late. She was surrounded.

Before she could scream, a deep, commanding voice cut through the tension.

"Enough."

The wolves froze, their ears flattening as they backed away. A tall figure stepped into the moonlight, his presence overwhelming.

Elena's breath caught as she met the piercing gaze of the man before her. His dark hair framed a face that was both cruelly beautiful and terrifying. There was no mistaking who he was.

The Alpha of the enemy pack.
