Chereads / Genesis of the Six / Chapter 5 - Reed

Chapter 5 - Reed

Reed stood at the edge of the village, his eyes tracing the darkened horizon where the faint remnants of a once peaceful night now carried the weight of impending doom. He could feel the shift in the air—

The same unease that clung to his skin ever since that fateful encounter with Conrad and the gaint mysterious figure. The memory of the night haunted him, an echo he couldn't shake. No matter how hard he tried to push it down, it lingered, a constant reminder of his failure.

"Come on, Reed! Let's get this job done!"

Gabriel's voice broke through the haze in Reed's mind.

"Gabrial"

The big man, clad in heavy armor, grinned, his confidence in the mission unwavering. Gabriel was the rock of their team, the one who could always be relied on when things got tough."

Reed gave a faint nod, but his focus was elsewhere. He couldn't stop replaying the events of that night in his head—the chaos, the bloodshed, the feeling of helplessness as things spiraled out of control. How could he lead now when his own mind was in shambles?

"Reed, you're with us, right?"

Ronan asked, his sharp eyes catching Reed's distracted gaze. He was lean, quick on his feet, and ready for whatever battle awaited them. Unlike Gabriel,

"Ronan"

Thrived in the thick of combat, the adrenaline pushing him forward with each swing of his sword.

"Caius"

The quiet mage, adjusted his pouch of potions and enchantments, his calm demeanor a sharp contrast to the rising tension in Reed's chest. He had always been the steady hand, the one who kept the group grounded with his arcane knowledge.

Together they were the members of

"DAWNWATCH"

Dawnwatch – The Global Organization

"The Dawnwatch is a publicly recognized organization dedicated to protecting humanity from supernatural threats such as demons and other dark forces. Dawnwatch is an established and reputable entity, with its existence known to the public. It is recognized worldwide as the primary defense against supernatural threats, with a network of guilds and operatives that span throughout all 4 continents.

Core Mission:

The primary mission of the Dawnwatch is simple but essential: to combat supernatural threats and ensure the safety of civilians around the world. The organization specializes in eliminating or containing malevolent entities—demons, cursed beings, rogue magical forces, and anything else that poses a risk to the world. Dawnwatch operatives are regularly called upon to intervene in various crises, from demon raids to outbreaks of dark magic.

The organization works closely with local governments, law enforcement, and other public institutions, providing expertise and assistance in cases that involve supernatural dangers. However, while they are public, their work still operates under strict protocols to maintain order and minimize panic among the general population.

Structure and Influence:

The Dawnwatch operates as a global network of guilds and specialized teams. It has an established reputation and a visible presence across major cities and regions worldwide, particularly where supernatural activity is known to be frequent.

Guilds: The Dawnwatch maintains several guilds in cities across the globe. These guilds act as regional hubs, providing resources, training, and support for Dawnwatch members. Each guild is staffed by a combination of combat specialists, strategists, mages, and support personnel, all working together to tackle supernatural threats. These guilds also serve as recruiting centers, where new members are trained and prepared for fieldwork.

Leadership: At the top of the Dawnwatch hierarchy is a council of high-ranking members, composed of seasoned leaders, strategists, and experts in various fields. These individuals oversee the operations of the guilds and make strategic decisions regarding global threats.

Emergency Responses: Dawnwatch is the first line of defense when supernatural entities attack or when mysterious phenomena occur. Whether it's a full-scale demon invasion or a series of strange deaths tied to dark magic, Dawnwatch teams are deployed to handle the situation and keep it contained, often working in tandem with law enforcement and military units."

Reed shaking off the lingering thoughts. He turned to face his team, forcing himself to focus. This wasn't just about him—it was about the lives of the people they were sent to protect.

The village mayor had explained the situation in grave detail—demons had been attacking, and the local defense forces couldn't handle the onslaught. It was up to Reed and his team to eliminate the threat before it spread further.

"Follow the demon tracks,"

Reed instructed, his voice steady now, though his heart raced. The team set off, each member alert and ready for the coming battle. Reed moved through the village's outskirts, his mind sifting through strategies, trying to formulate a plan that would ensure their victory.

But something was off. His thoughts, clouded by the events of the past, felt fragmented. He tried to steady himself, to push the fear and doubt aside, but it was like trying to hold back a storm. He couldn't think clearly, not like he used to.

As they ventured deeper into the woods on the edge of the village, the tension grew thick, every creaking branch or rustling leaf sending them on edge. Reed's rings hummed faintly on his fingers, a tool that once helped him process information with precision, but now, even they felt distant, their power slipping through his fingers like sand.

The first wave of demons emerged from the shadows, their grotesque forms moving like shadows, barely tangible yet terrifyingly real. The battle was upon them.

Gabriel surged forward, his massive sword cleaving through the first demon with ease. Ronan darted around the fray, his light armor allowing him to move fluidly, his blades flashing as he cut down opponents with deadly grace. Caius stood at the rear, his hands moving in a blur as he cast protective enchantments and threw explosive potions into the melee.

Reed stood back, formulating a strategy in his mind, trying to coordinate the team's movements. But the plan that had once been a strength now felt disjointed, too slow, too unfocused. His mind, clouded with the aftermath of his past trauma, couldn't keep up with the chaos unfolding before him.

Gabriel, despite his strength, was overwhelmed by the sheer number of demons. Ronan fought valiantly, but the weight of the battle was beginning to take its toll. Caius was still trying to maintain the team's defense, but his potions weren't enough to keep up with the relentless onslaught.

And Reed… Reed couldn't focus. Every time he tried to issue a command, the words felt hollow, slipping through his fingers like water. His strategy was flawed, incomplete. He couldn't think fast enough to adapt, and with every passing moment, the team grew weaker.

Gabriel was the first to fall, his massive frame crashing to the ground as a demon's claws pierced through his chest. Ronan was next, a blade slashing through his side as he tried to defend himself. Caius fell not long after, an explosion of pain as a demon's talon struck him down.

Reed froze. The weight of it all crashed down on him in an instant—the failure, the loss, the knowledge that he had led them all to this moment. His heart raced, his breath quickening. Panic set in.

"No… no!"

Reed's mind screamed as he looked around at his dying comrades, his body paralyzed by the overwhelming guilt and fear.

And then, in that instant, the demons turned their attention to him. Reed ran. He couldn't think, couldn't process. All he knew was that he needed to get away, to escape the nightmare he had caused.

But they caught up to him.

The last thing Reed saw was the bloodied faces of his team, their eyes wide. And then, as the demons closed in on him, darkness took over.
