Chapter 1 - Chapter 1

A Perfect Day

The morning sun streamed through the large windows of our mansion, filling every corner with warm light. I woke up, smiling as the bright rays touched my face. Everything felt perfect—everything was in its place.

I stretched and slowly got out of bed. The familiar scent of breakfast wafted up from the kitchen. It smelled like Mom was cooking her famous pancakes, a treat she only made on days like this, when the whole family could be together.

I grabbed my phone from the bedside table. A message from Arabella popped up on the screen.

"O, Pers! The gala's tonight! Are you ready? Who's your date?"

I chuckled softly, replying, "I'm going solo tonight. I'll look fabulous alone."

I didn't wait for her response. Instead, I went to the bathroom to get ready, pushing aside the thoughts of tonight's event. My mind was too busy to focus on anything else.

As I looked at myself in the mirror, I saw the reflection of someone who was always expected to look perfect, act perfect, and be perfect. It was a role I had played my entire life. Tall, with flawless skin and beach waves that made it seem like I had just stepped out of a magazine. But, beyond my appearance, I was more than just that. I was a Montclair—my family's reputation was built on success, and my role in it was clear.

I heard a knock at the door. "Miss Persephone, good morning," Julian said, stepping inside. He was our family's bodyguard, but to me, he was like a silent guardian who'd been with us for years.

"Morning, Julian," I greeted, giving him a smile. "Have you checked the perimeter today?"

He nodded. "Everything is secure. The gala will be under full protection."

I nodded in approval. Julian had been with us since I was a child, and I trusted him. It was his job to keep us safe, and I always felt reassured knowing he was around.

As I finished getting dressed, I put on the dress my parents had picked out for the gala. It was grand, but elegant—exactly the kind of thing we'd wear for such an event. The Montclairs were not just known for their wealth, but for their status in society. Every appearance we made was scrutinized, and tonight would be no different.

Daddy walked into my room with a serious look on his face, though his tone was gentle. "Persephone, remember tonight. You're representing the family."

I nodded, giving him my best smile. "Of course, Dad. I won't disappoint."

My mother appeared in the doorway shortly after, checking on me. "Are you all ready, darling?"

I adjusted my dress, checking the details one last time. "Yes, Mama. I'm good."

"Perfect," she said, smiling. "I'm sure you'll make a great impression tonight."

---

The usual pre-gala hustle filled the house. We were all in a rush, but there was a sense of excitement in the air, the kind you get before an event that could make or break your reputation.

I checked my phone again. Another message from Arabella.

"O, Pers! Don't tell me, you're not bringing anyone tonight?!"

I smiled to myself and typed back, "Nope. I'm good."

I wasn't exactly excited about the gala. Don't get me wrong, I loved the glitz and glam, but it was always the same—smiling, shaking hands, pretending to be something I wasn't. But it was part of my life. It was part of the Montclair name. And if I wanted to live up to it, I had to play the part.

I grabbed my coat and headed downstairs. Julian was standing by the door, ready to escort me to the car. The security team was already in position, ensuring that the event would go off without a hitch.

"Let's go," Julian said, his tone always calm and collected. He was like that all the time—never rattled, never fazed. I admired him for that.

We stepped out into the sleek black car that was waiting for us. The engine purred as we drove through the streets of the city. I watched the city skyline fade into the distance as we headed toward the gala venue, my mind lost in thought.

As we neared the venue, I could feel the buzz of anticipation in the air. People would be arriving soon—celebrities, politicians, influential business figures—all of them hoping to make connections, further their ambitions, and secure their place in the world.

I had no real interest in any of that. But I knew how important tonight was for my family. The Montclairs needed to be seen. We had to maintain our power and status in the world. The pressure was always there, lingering in the background, but tonight, it felt heavier than usual.

"Persephone, are you alright?" Julian's voice snapped me back to reality. I turned to him, giving a small smile.

"I'm fine, Julian," I said, though I wasn't sure I believed it myself.

We arrived at the grand venue, a towering building illuminated with glittering lights. The marble pillars and glass chandeliers sparkled as we entered the hall. Guests in their finest attire moved around, exchanging pleasantries, while servers in tuxedos offered drinks and appetizers.

I took a deep breath, straightened my back, and stepped into the world where everything was carefully orchestrated. Where smiles were fake, and alliances were made behind closed doors.

I glanced around, looking for my parents. They were already speaking with a few guests, exchanging business cards and pleasantries. I approached them, offering my best smile as I joined the conversation. The crowd was already growing, the buzz getting louder.

Everything was going according to plan, at least for now.
