64: Unraveling the Web
The moon hung low in the night sky, casting pale light across the field where the battle had raged only hours before. The air had grown cold, the warmth of the fight now replaced by a chilling sense of unease. Adrian stood at the edge of the battlefield, staring into the distance, his thoughts tangled in a web of uncertainty.
Cassandra's voice broke through the silence, soft but firm. "We need to move quickly. The longer we stay here, the more likely it is that whoever took Ralvyn's body will act."
Adrian nodded, his mind still reeling from the discovery. He had known Ralvyn to be a manipulator, but this… this was different. Whoever had taken his body wasn't just looking for revenge; they had a purpose. A purpose that Adrian couldn't yet fathom.
"We'll need to gather the council," Adrian said, turning to Cassandra. "If Ralvyn had dealings with anyone in the kingdom, someone knows something. We need to uncover every lead."
Cassandra's eyes narrowed, a hint of suspicion in her gaze. "But do you trust the council? They might be involved in this too."
Adrian clenched his jaw. "I don't trust anyone right now. But we don't have much of a choice. If we go after this blindly, we risk falling into a trap."
Cassandra didn't argue. She understood the necessity of caution. "I'll prepare the men. We should be ready to move within the hour."
As she walked off to organize their forces, Adrian felt the weight of the situation pressing on him. Every decision, every move, had to be calculated. He couldn't afford to be reckless. Not with everything at stake.

Hours later, Adrian and Cassandra arrived at the council hall, a massive structure nestled within the heart of the capital. The tall, stone walls towered above them, casting long shadows that seemed to stretch across the courtyard. Inside, the council members were already gathered, their faces a mixture of concern and curiosity. The news of Ralvyn's disappearance had spread quickly, and the tension in the room was palpable.
"Lord Adrian," the head of the council, Lady Isolde, greeted him with a nod. "We've been awaiting your arrival. The reports of Lord Ralvyn's death—are they true?"
"They are," Adrian replied curtly, stepping forward. "But his body has gone missing. We suspect foul play."
The council members exchanged uneasy glances. Isolde, a woman of sharp intelligence and even sharper diplomacy, leaned forward, her gaze never leaving Adrian's face.
"Who do you suspect is behind this?" she asked, her voice calm but sharp.
Adrian hesitated. There were too many possibilities, too many factions with their own agendas. "At this point, I don't know. But I intend to find out. And I need your help."
Lady Isolde raised an eyebrow. "Help? How do you expect us to assist you in this matter?"
"I need information," Adrian said, his tone steady. "I need to know everything about Ralvyn's dealings before his death. His alliances, his enemies. Who did he owe favors to? Who did he betray?"
The council members exchanged looks, their unease growing. Finally, a voice spoke from the back of the room.
"Lord Adrian, what makes you think the council has this information?" The voice was sharp, skeptical. It belonged to Duke Valen, a man known for his political ambition and his love of power.
Adrian's gaze locked onto Valen's, and for a moment, the room seemed to hold its breath. "Because," Adrian began, his voice cold and unyielding, "someone in this room has to know something. And if you don't, then I suggest we start looking elsewhere."
There was a heavy silence before Lady Isolde spoke again, her voice quieter this time. "Very well, Lord Adrian. We will provide you with the information you seek. But you must understand, this is not a matter to be taken lightly. Ralvyn's disappearance could have far-reaching consequences, not just for the kingdom, but for all of us."
"I understand," Adrian said, his eyes never leaving Isolde's. "And I'm prepared to face whatever comes."

Later that night, Adrian sat alone in his chambers, his mind still processing the events of the day. The council had provided him with a list of Ralvyn's known contacts, both allies and enemies. It was a long list, and Adrian knew that each name represented a potential lead. But something nagged at him. Something didn't add up.
He had seen Ralvyn's body fall on the battlefield. He had watched the life leave the man's eyes. Yet, somehow, his body had disappeared without a trace. It was almost as if someone had wanted to erase every part of his existence.
A soft knock at the door pulled Adrian from his thoughts.
"Come in," he called, his voice still heavy with the weight of the mystery.
The door creaked open, and Cassandra stepped inside, her expression unreadable. She had always been one to keep her emotions in check, but tonight, there was something different in her gaze.
"You're still thinking about it," she said quietly, sitting across from him.
Adrian didn't deny it. "How could I not? It doesn't make sense. The timing, the disappearance—it's all too perfect. Someone wanted Ralvyn out of the picture. But why go to such lengths to hide his death?"
Cassandra regarded him for a moment before responding. "It's possible that someone wanted to make sure Ralvyn's death looked like something it wasn't. Perhaps they wanted to control the narrative, make it harder to trace his death back to them."
"That's what I'm thinking," Adrian replied, his fingers tapping the desk absentmindedly. "But who would go to such extremes? Who could be behind this?"
Cassandra's eyes darkened. "There's someone who could."
Adrian's gaze snapped to hers. "Who?"
She paused for a moment, then leaned forward slightly. "Ralvyn's closest ally before his fall—the one he betrayed. Lord Alistair."
Adrian's heart skipped a beat. Lord Alistair had been a powerful figure in the kingdom, known for his ruthlessness and his extensive connections. If Ralvyn had betrayed him, it could explain the lengths taken to erase his death.
"Where is he now?" Adrian asked, his voice suddenly urgent.
"He's not easy to find," Cassandra said, her expression guarded. "But if anyone knows how to manipulate people from the shadows, it's him."
Adrian stood up, determination hardening his features. "Then we'll find him. And when we do, we'll have answers."
