Chapter 1 - A typical Monday morning

As I stepped off the crowded bus and onto the sidewalk, I couldn't help but feel a sense of dread wash over me. Another Monday morning, another day of barely scraping by. My name is Emily Wilson, and I'm a secretary at the prestigious Smith Enterprises. I've been working for the company for three years now, and while it's not my dream job, it pays the bills.

I trudged through the revolving doors of the high-rise building, my eyes scanning the sleek, modern lobby. The sound of murmured conversations and the gentle hum of the elevator filled the air. I made my way to the bank of elevators, pressing the button for the top floor.

As I rode the elevator, I smoothed out my worn blouse and straightened my shoulders. I had to look presentable, after all. The doors slid open, and I stepped out into the opulent office suite. The receptionist, a poised woman with a flawless smile, greeted me warmly.

"Good morning, Emily. Mr. Smith is waiting for you."

I nodded, my heart skipping a beat. Mr. Smith, the CEO of Smith Enterprises, was a formidable figure. Tall, handsome, and ruthless in business, he commanded respect. I'd worked for him for three years, and while he was demanding, he was also fair.

I made my way to his office, my heels clicking on the marble floor. The door was open, and I stepped inside, closing it behind me.

"Good morning, Mr. Smith," I said, my voice steady.

He looked up from the papers on his desk, his piercing blue eyes locking onto mine. "Ah, Emily. Good morning."

For a moment, we just stared at each other. I felt a flutter in my chest, which I quickly suppressed. I was his secretary, after all. It was my job to remain professional.

"What's on the agenda for today?" I asked, breaking the silence.

Mr. Smith leaned back in his chair, steepling his fingers together. "We have a meeting with the marketing team at 10 am. I need you to take notes and distribute the minutes afterwards."

I nodded, jotting down the task in my notebook. "Anything else?"

He hesitated for a moment before speaking. "Actually, Emily, I need you to work late tonight. We have a... situation that requires attention."

My heart sank. Working late meant I'd have to miss my second job, waiting tables at a local restaurant. I relied on that job to make ends meet.

"I understand, Mr. Smith," I said, trying to keep my tone neutral.

He nodded, his eyes narrowing slightly. "Good. I'll see you at the meeting."

I turned to leave, my mind racing with thoughts of how I was going to make up for the lost income. As I reached the door, I felt a hand on my shoulder.

"Emily?"

I turned to see Mr. Smith standing behind me, his eyes gleaming with an intensity that made my heart skip a beat.

"Yes, Mr. Smith?"

"I almost forgot. I need you to pick up some documents from my house tonight. I'll give you the address."

I nodded, my mind racing with questions. What kind of documents? And why did he need me to pick them up from his house?

But I didn't ask. I just nodded and left the office, wondering what I'd just gotten myself into.
