Sam's POV.
Jane took slow steps as she headed to the front of the school court, her steps calculated like there was something running through her mind and I didn't feel okay about it.
"You mean you have evidence of Sam purposely murdering your sister?" The head mistress asked and Jane nodded, staring murderously at me, causing me to flinch as fear enveloped me.
I didn't know what she meant by that but I hoped the tables hadn't turned against me. She was friends with Benny so I hoped Benny hadn't given her the false evidence my adoptive mother manipulated not caring that she was going against the bargain we had.
"Jane! Are you sure about what you are saying? You have been away for months now and wasn't around when it happened so how did you get your hands on the evidence? The school CCTV camera was dead the day it happened so how do you have evidence or did someone accidentally record it when it happened and handed you the evidence?" The headmistress asked and Jane smiled weirdly.
"No, the school camera did but everything was wiped off and I have the evidence because I was able to get my hands on them," Jane announced, turning around like a heroine to look at everyone with a smile which didn't reach her eyes and I knew she was faking it. The thoughts of what might be running through her mind that feared me.
"Okay, fine then. Show us the evidence," The headmistress said and Jane's smile widened, this time reaching her eyes.
She turned to look at me and started heading in my direction. When she was some inch's away, she stopped and started searching for her bag.
It took a while before she stopped and when she finally stood up, she was holding a knife which she started swinging before everyone with the smile on her face intensified and I swallowed hard knowing not knowing what she intended to do with it.
"Everyone." She called out, turning to look at each of them.
"I am sorry to disappoint all of you. Just as y'all knows, I am just returning today and I have no evidence but be rest assured that I will be avenging my sister's death today and I know that is what everyone of you want," she laughed and without wasting another seconds lunged at me.
"Stop her, fast," the headmistress yelled at the security guards who rushed after her and before she could be able to harm me, they seized her and she started yelling with tears.
"Allow me to kill her, she killed my sister. She killed my sister. She is a murderer, allow me to take her life too. She doesn't deserve to live." She kept on crying on top of her voice as the security guards dragged her always
"That was close," I heard Benny who had run to hide behind me say as she sighed in relief.
"Please Mrs Clinton, can we get over this already before someone's life is endangered," Benny said as she came to stand beside me again.
Shs eyed me and looked away.
"Yeah. I am about to do that right now."
"So passing out the punishment that will be melted on Sam for murdering Diane. She is to sew a few years in prison with some punishment which the Alpha will get to decide but for now, we will be keeping her in the school prison and she will be carrying out some punishment everyday in school like cleaning," the headmistress announced and somehow I felt myself sigh in relief because it turned out to be exactly how my adoptive mother promised and when I turned to look at her, I could see the proud look on her face.
"You may take her away," The headmistress instructed the security man.
"Wait, Mrs Clinton, I have a favour to go beg of you. Please can you allow Sam to go to the Mating ceremony tonight with me. This will be the last time I will be spending my time with her again and please I have really dreamt of us doing it together, please," Benny pleaded which I didn't know why she would want that.
"No, Benny. Your sister is already a convicted murderer," the headmistress refused.
"I know but it isn't like she had murdered Diane intentionally, it was a mistake so she deserves the chance of attending the mating ceremony tonight, please. I will make sure to contact the security guards to come fetch her when we are done or you can send some over to come monitor her. Please grant me this," Benny pleaded and burst into tears leaving me shocked because that was unlike Benny, caring this much about me attending the mating ceremony together with her and it dawned on me that she wanted me to serve her as her slave as she had intended before the mating ceremony which wasn't going to happen if I'm locked behind jail.
The audience started murmuring for a while, some agreeing with Benny while others refused, cruising me while saying I didn't deserve such but the headmistress quieted everyone and agreed to Benny's request but she warned.
"If she is to escape through the mating ceremony, we will hold you accountable and you will serve in her place."
"I will make sure that doesn't happen," Benny promised, thanking the headmistress and I could only shake my head seeing the false care she was displaying in front of everyone knowing she had only said that for her selfish interest.
The court was dismissed and alongside my mother and some security guards, I was taken home.
*
It was already evening when the mating ceremony would begin and I put on the dull dress Benny had chosen for me.
I didn't complain, knowing I shouldn't outshine Benny at the ball, especially after what I'd done.
When we arrived at the ball, Benny left me behind. She asked me to wait in a spot where she could easily find me later, when she went to mingle with her friends. She didn't want me by her side, as it would be embarrassing.
So I wandered aimlessly through the hall, feeling out of place and unwanted checking if I could find a place to fit in.
And all of a sudden, a shiver ran down my spine as I sensed an inexplicable connection to someone across the room.
When I turned to check who it was, It was none other than Ethan, the Alpha's son and Diane's boyfriend and I gulped hard.
It was the first time I was seeing him after everything happened and a wave of anxiety washed over me, leaving me panting for breath. I tried to turn away before he saw me, it was too late. His gaze fell upon me, and for a moment, the world around me seemed to fade away.
My breath caught, and I couldn't tear my gaze away from his piercing eyes and to my horror, I felt an undeniable bond begin to form between us. Then, I caught his scent - an intoxicating, rich wine aroma that seemed to enthrall me, leaving me craving for more.
My heart skipped a beat as reality crashed into me, a wave of panic washing over me…
"E–Ethan is my mate."
Shock and fear engulfed me, overwhelming my mind as I swallowed the lump that formed in my throat.
"No, this cannot be happening," I cried out in dread. "This cannot be."
"I couldn't be the mate of the man who was supposed to be Benny's mate tonight. The man Benny had killed Diane for, just to have a chance with him? "No, moon goodness, this must be a joke!" I mentally screamed, scared of what was happening.
"No, this was some false prank," I yelled and without another thought, I felt my legs move backward, and then I broke into a run. I weaved through the guests and out of the hall even as the guards were yelling at me to stop with the people around panicking but I didn't stop as I slipped away, gasping for breath.
My thoughts spun in endless circles as I ran blindly, not caring where my feet took me.
My best friend was dead, and to make matters worse, her boyfriend, the ruthless Ethan was now my mate.
What the hell is this?
