Chapter 1 - chapter 1; first impression

Ella Parker stood at the entrance of Kent Madison College, her suitcase clutched tightly in one hand. The campus stretched out before her, a mix of old stone buildings and green lawns, all framed by tall trees that seemed to whisper with the wind. A deep breath filled her lungs, and she couldn't shake the feeling of nervousness that settled in her chest. It wasn't just the size of the campus that intimidated her; it was everything. The newness of it all. The unfamiliar faces. The sense that she was starting something big, something she wasn't entirely sure she was ready for.

She had spent the last few weeks telling herself that she was prepared. That college was just the next step, another chapter in her life. But standing here, just outside the main hall of Kent Madison, she realized how much she had underestimated the challenge.

Ella had always been quiet. The type of person who preferred to keep to herself, reading books or journaling in the corner of a coffee shop, her headphones tucked in to block out the world. Back home, she had a small circle of friends, people she trusted and who knew her well enough to understand her introverted nature. But here? Here, she was just another freshman, just another face in the crowd. A nervous face, at that.

She glanced down at her watch, the hands ticking slowly, as though time itself was mocking her hesitation.

"First day nerves?" a voice interrupted her thoughts, pulling her back to reality.

Ella startled, her grip tightening on the handle of her suitcase as she spun around. Standing behind her was a guy, tall and lean, with short, tousled brown hair and piercing blue eyes that seemed to sparkle even in the dull overcast light. His smile was warm, but there was something about it—something easy and confident—that made her feel both comforted and, oddly enough, more nervous.

"Uh… yeah," she stammered, looking down at her shoes. "I'm not sure where to go first."

He raised an eyebrow, as if he hadn't quite expected her to answer so quickly, but his smile didn't falter. "It's normal. Everyone feels the same on their first day. The key is to act like you know exactly where you're going, even if you don't." He chuckled, a sound that seemed to put Ella a little at ease. "My name's Leo, by the way. I'm a second-year here. You're a freshman, right?"

Ella nodded, though she wasn't sure if she should say anything more. She wasn't the type to introduce herself easily, especially to someone who looked as put-together as Leo did. But then again, it wasn't like she had much to lose. She'd come to Kent Madison hoping for a fresh start, a chance to leave behind the shy, quiet version of herself she had been back home.

"Yeah, I'm Ella. Ella Parker." She fidgeted with the strap of her bag, trying to steady her nerves.

Leo's grin widened, and he took a step closer. "Well, Ella, welcome to Kent Madison. I know it's overwhelming, but you'll get the hang of it." He glanced around the campus, his eyes scanning the path ahead. "You're looking for the registration desk, right? That's where you'll check in and get your dorm key and all that. I'll show you the way."

Ella hesitated for a moment, but then, deciding that she didn't want to look even more lost than she already felt, she nodded. "That would be great, thanks."

As they walked together, Leo led the way down the main pathway, the sound of their footsteps echoing against the cobblestones. The campus felt like a world of its own, almost a mix of old history and modern youth. The buildings were a patchwork of Gothic architecture and newer structures, all surrounded by wide, open lawns that seemed to stretch on forever. The air was cool, the sky overcast, but there was still something inviting about the place. Something that made Ella feel, for the first time in weeks, that maybe this would be okay.

"Tell me, Ella," Leo began, glancing sideways at her with a casual smile, "what's your major? You look like someone who has it all figured out."

Ella flushed slightly at the compliment, but it wasn't one she was used to. She had always felt like an outsider in her classes back home, never quite fitting in with the more outgoing students. "I'm studying health sciences," she said quietly. "I want to go into pharmacy eventually."

Leo's expression turned thoughtful, nodding as he took in the information. "Health sciences, huh? That's impressive. A lot of work, but worth it in the end. I'm doing business myself, not quite as exciting, but it pays the bills." He flashed her a grin that made his eyes twinkle.

Ella smiled back, feeling a little more comfortable. "Business sounds good too. At least you'll have the option to do a lot of different things."

Leo laughed, running a hand through his hair. "Yeah, that's true. But enough about me. What brought you to Kent Madison? I mean, besides the obvious—studying, obviously." He raised an eyebrow, teasing her gently.

Ella chuckled, feeling a little lighter. "It's just… I don't know, I wanted a fresh start. A chance to do something bigger than what I had back home, I guess."

Leo's eyes softened, and for a moment, Ella could have sworn she saw a flicker of understanding in them. "I get that. It's a huge step, coming to a place like this. New people, new experiences. It's like pressing the reset button on your life."

Ella nodded, feeling the weight of his words. It was exactly what she needed. A chance to reinvent herself, to leave behind the shy, uncertain girl she had been and embrace something more. Something bold. Something new.

They reached the registration desk, and Leo stood back as Ella approached, handing over her paperwork to the receptionist. The woman at the desk was friendly, giving her a warm welcome before handing over a small envelope with a key card and dorm details.

"There you go, all set. Welcome to Kent Madison, Miss Parker," the receptionist said with a smile.

"Thank you," Ella said, her voice more confident than she felt.

Leo stepped forward, offering a smile. "See? Told you I'd help you out."

Ella couldn't help but smile back, though it was a little shy. "I appreciate it. Really."

"No problem at all." Leo tilted his head slightly, giving her an almost mischievous look. "You know, I was planning to grab a coffee later. If you want to join me, I can show you around campus. Get you familiar with the places to hang out, study spots, and all that."

Ella felt her heart skip a beat at the invitation. Was he asking her out? No, he wasn't—he was just being friendly, right? She didn't want to read too much into it. She didn't know how to read Leo, anyway.

"That sounds nice," she said after a beat. "But, um, I should probably unpack first. Maybe another time?"

"Sure," Leo said, though he didn't seem bothered by her hesitation. "You know where to find me if you change your mind." He winked and turned, heading back toward the main campus, his confident stride making him seem even more at home.

Ella stood there for a moment, watching him disappear into the crowd, her thoughts swirling. What had just happened? Was she imagining things, or had there been some kind of connection there?

Shaking her head, she headed toward her dorm. It was only day one, and already, things were feeling… different. Maybe, just maybe, Kent Madison College was going to be exactly the fresh start she needed.
