Chapter 48 - Chapter 48: A Glimpse of the Truth

The safe house was silent except for the soft hum of Jiwon's laptop. The team sat around the small dining table, their faces tense as they reviewed the files they had risked their lives to recover. Despite their escape from the warehouse, the reality of their situation weighed heavily on them.

Seojin stared at her coffee cup, her mind replaying the moment Hyunwoo appeared. The way he moved, the way he called out to her team—it was unmistakable. He had saved them. But why?

"You're quiet," Dojin said, breaking her thoughts.

"I'm thinking," Seojin replied curtly, not looking up.

"Well, think faster. We need answers," Dojin shot back.

"Enough," Jiwon interjected. "Let's focus on the files. I've decrypted a few, but most of them are fragmented. Here's what I've got so far."

Jiwon pulled up a document on the screen. It was a blueprint of a government facility located in the heart of Seoul.

"This is the National Security Headquarters," Jiwon explained. "It's one of the most secure buildings in the country, housing classified information, surveillance systems, and emergency response plans."

Minji leaned closer to the screen. "Why would the Phoenix target this place? Are they planning a direct attack?"

Jiwon shook his head. "It's more than that. From what I've pieced together, the Phoenix doesn't just want to destroy—they want to take control. If they can infiltrate this facility, they'll have access to the entire country's security systems."

Seojin frowned. "It's not just about power—it's about sending a message. If they succeed, they'll show the world that no system is untouchable."

Dojin crossed his arms, his expression skeptical. "And where does Hyunwoo fit into all this? He's part of the Phoenix, but he just saved our lives. What's his game?"

Seojin hesitated. "I don't know. But if he wanted us dead, he wouldn't have intervened. There's something he's not telling us."

Minji looked uneasy. "What if it's a trap? What if he's leading us into something bigger?"

"That's a possibility," Seojin admitted. "But right now, he's the only lead we have. We need to figure out his motives."

Jiwon suddenly gasped, his eyes widening as he scrolled through the data. "Wait—look at this!"

He projected an image onto the wall. It was a list of names, dates, and locations, all linked to the Phoenix.

"These are their operatives," Jiwon explained. "This file details their movements, assignments, and even communication logs."

Seojin's eyes narrowed as she scanned the list. One name stood out to her immediately: Hyunwoo Kang.

"His name is here," she said, pointing to the screen. "Look at the date next to it—it's the day we raided the warehouse. He was assigned to intercept us."

"So he was ordered to kill us," Dojin said.

"No," Seojin said, her voice firm. "If that were true, we wouldn't be here. He disobeyed his orders."

The team fell silent, the weight of the revelation sinking in. Hyunwoo's defection—or betrayal, depending on how they looked at it—changed everything.

"Why would he go against the Phoenix?" Minji asked.

"Maybe he's trying to redeem himself," Jiwon suggested.

"Or maybe he's playing both sides," Dojin said darkly.

Seojin didn't respond. Her instincts told her there was more to Hyunwoo's actions than met the eye, but she couldn't afford to let her emotions cloud her judgment.

As dawn broke, the team made their plan. They would stake out the National Security Headquarters, searching for any signs of Phoenix activity.

"We can't wait for them to make the first move," Seojin said. "If they're targeting the facility, we need to stop them before they get anywhere near it."

Jiwon nodded. "I'll keep decrypting the rest of the files. There's still a lot we don't know about their plans."

"And what about Hyunwoo?" Minji asked.

Seojin hesitated. "If he shows up again, we'll deal with him. For now, we focus on the mission."

Seojin's Conflict

Later that night, as the team prepared for their stakeout, Seojin found herself alone on the balcony of the safe house. The cool night air did little to calm her racing thoughts.

Hyunwoo's face appeared in her mind—his determined gaze, the way he fought to protect them. Was it guilt? Loyalty? Or something else entirely?

She pulled out her phone and stared at the encrypted message he had sent her weeks ago, the one she hadn't dared to open. Taking a deep breath, she began to type in the decryption key.

The message read: "The truth isn't what you think it is. When the time comes, trust me."
