Chapter 24: A Test of Resolve

The journey back to Konoha was tense, the air heavy with unspoken thoughts. Nicolas walked slightly ahead of the group, his mind replaying the encounter with the masked figure. Their words echoed in his ears.

"You don't belong here, Sage."

It wasn't just a threat—it felt personal, as if they knew something about him that he didn't.

"Nicolas," Rina called, breaking his thoughts. "You've been quiet. What's on your mind?"

He slowed his pace, letting the others catch up. "That masked shinobi… they knew who I was. Or at least, what I am."

Rina's expression darkened. "That's concerning. They've never shown this level of awareness before. If they're targeting you specifically, we're dealing with something far worse than rogue operatives."

Kotetsu grunted. "Makes sense. If they want the artifact, taking out the guy connected to it would be their top priority."

Nicolas nodded. "Which means they'll keep coming. I need to be ready for whatever's next."

A Hokage's Concern

Back in Konoha, the team reported to Tsunade in her office. The Hokage listened intently as Rina described the ambush, her sharp eyes narrowing at the mention of the masked figure.

"They're escalating," Tsunade said, leaning back in her chair. "We've dealt with rogue groups before, but this… this feels coordinated."

She turned to Nicolas. "And you're certain they recognized you?"

"Yes," Nicolas replied. "They called me 'Sage' and told me to leave this world."

Tsunade frowned, drumming her fingers on the desk. "It seems your presence here has drawn more attention than we anticipated. I'm not going to pretend I understand everything about your mission, but it's clear these enemies see you as a threat."

She stood, her tone commanding. "From now on, you're under stricter protection. Rina, you're to stay close to Nicolas at all times. Kotetsu and Izumo, double the patrols around the vault and the village perimeter."

"What about me?" Nicolas asked.

Tsunade smirked. "You're going to train. Hard. If they want to target you, you'd better make sure you're strong enough to fight back."

A New Mentor

Later that day, Nicolas found himself in one of Konoha's training grounds. Standing across from him was Kakashi Hatake, his signature book tucked into his pocket.

"You're the one causing all the commotion," Kakashi said, his tone casual.
