Chapter 9: Shadows of Doubt
The return to the Hidden Leaf Village was quiet, the team's victory muted by the rogue's cryptic words. Nicolas walked a few paces behind Shikaku and Rina, his sword sheathed but his thoughts restless.
What's coming? The rogue's words echoed in his mind, refusing to be ignored. He didn't have answers, only a growing unease that the mission had uncovered the edge of something much larger.
The villagers greeted their return with relief and gratitude, though the team remained somber. The rogue was escorted to the intelligence division for questioning, but Nicolas doubted they would learn much from him. Whoever he was working for—or running from—had instilled a deep fear.
Tsunade was waiting for them at the Hokage's office, her sharp gaze taking in every detail as they filed in. She leaned back in her chair, hands steepled under her chin.
"Report," she said curtly.
---
Shikaku stepped forward, recounting the mission with his usual precision. He detailed the traps, the rogue's skills, and the team's efforts to subdue him. When he finished, Tsunade nodded, her expression thoughtful.
"And you," she said, turning to Nicolas. "What's your assessment?"
Nicolas hesitated, unsure of what to say. "He was strong," he began. "Not as strong as a Jonin, but experienced. His chakra control was unstable, almost… tainted. And he said something before we brought him down—'What's coming.' I don't know what he meant, but it didn't feel like an idle threat."
Tsunade's expression darkened. "Taunted chakra? That's concerning. It could mean he's been experimenting with forbidden techniques or under the influence of something worse."
Shikaku crossed his arms. "Whatever the case, he's not acting alone. Someone's pulling the strings."
Tsunade nodded. "Agreed. I'll have the intelligence division prioritize his interrogation. In the meantime, you all did well. Nicolas, especially. For a first mission, you showed remarkable composure."
Nicolas felt a flicker of pride but quickly tamped it down. "Thank you, Lady Hokage."
"Don't let it go to your head," she added with a smirk. "You've still got a long way to go."
---
Later that evening, Nicolas found himself alone at the training grounds. The moon hung high in the sky, casting a pale glow over the area. He swung his sword in slow, deliberate arcs, replaying the fight in his mind. Every move, every mistake—it all replayed like a loop, pushing him to refine his technique.
"Can't sleep?" a voice called out.
He turned to see Rina approaching, a small smile on her face. She carried a canteen and two rice balls, which she held out to him. "Thought you might need these."
"Thanks," Nicolas said, accepting the food. They sat together on the edge of the training grounds, the silence between them oddly comforting.
"You were amazing out there," Rina said after a while. "I mean, for someone who's not even from this world, you held your own like a seasoned shinobi."
Nicolas chuckled softly. "I had good teammates. You and Shikaku made sure I didn't screw up too badly."
"Still," she insisted, "you've got something special. I can't explain it, but there's a strength in you—a potential. It's like you were meant for this."
Nicolas looked at her, his expression unreadable. He wanted to tell her about the entity, about the mission he didn't fully understand. But something held him back. The less they knew, the safer they would be.
"Thanks," he said simply. "I'll keep working hard."
---
As Rina left, Nicolas remained seated, gazing up at the stars. The rogue's words weighed heavily on him, but so did Tsunade's praise and Rina's faith in him. He wasn't just gaining strength—he was gaining connections, people who believed in him.
But what if he failed them? What if his mission led to their suffering?
The entity's whispers stirred faintly in his mind, reminding him of its cryptic promise. You are the key to balance.
Nicolas clenched his fists. He didn't know what the future held, but he knew one thing for certain: he couldn't afford to fail. Not now. Not ever.
