Chapter 11: Ripples in the Realm
The tense atmosphere of the village remained even after the dire wolf was subdued. It stood still beside Reiji, its massive form casting a long shadow over the cobblestone streets. The villagers whispered among themselves, and the players murmured nervously, some glancing at their message notifications, which seemed to be pinging nonstop.
Reiji, still standing in front of the wolf, clenched his fists. He had calmed the situation for now, but he could feel the wolf's power brimming just beneath the surface, a force waiting to be unleashed. This was his doing. The wolf's newfound strength was a direct result of his Fateweaver ability, and now, it was tied to him.
"Reiji," Aeris said softly, her small humanoid dragon form floating at eye level beside him. Her arms were crossed, and her expression was unreadable. "You've created something far beyond the scope of normal players. You realize this, don't you?"
Reiji turned his head slightly, meeting her golden gaze. "Yeah, I know. But what was I supposed to do? Let it stay weak and get hunted down like every other random mob? This... feels right."
Aeris sighed. "Perhaps. But the cost of doing what feels right can sometimes be higher than you expect. The world has noticed you now, Reiji. This wolf isn't just a monster anymore. It's a symbol—one that others will either fear, revere, or seek to destroy."
As if on cue, a world announcement echoed in the minds of every player logged into Eternal Realms.
---
World Announcement:
A new entity has risen in the Eastern Wilds! A dire wolf of unparalleled strength has emerged, bearing the mark of change. Who will rise to face this challenge—or claim it as their own?
---
The announcement sent shockwaves through the crowd. Players began to stir, some immediately opening their menus to check the map for the Eastern Wilds. Others exchanged excited whispers, already planning to form hunting parties.
Reiji felt a cold knot tighten in his stomach. "Great," he muttered under his breath. "Now every player in the game knows about this."
Aeris chuckled lightly, though there was no warmth in it. "What did I tell you? The game is watching. And now, so is everyone else."
Before Reiji could respond, a familiar voice called out from the crowd. "Reiji!"
He turned to see Yuki approaching, her expression a mixture of concern and frustration. "What the hell was that?" she asked, gesturing toward the dire wolf. "A world announcement? Do you have any idea what you've just done?"
Reiji met her gaze evenly. "I know exactly what I've done. This wolf is my responsibility now. I'm not going to let anyone else take it down."
Yuki's eyes narrowed. "Do you think you can protect it? Because I guarantee you, players from all over are going to come here now. They'll want to kill it for the loot, the fame, or just because they can. And if they find out you're connected to it..."
She didn't finish the sentence, but the implication was clear.
Reiji glanced at the wolf, which was now sitting calmly by his side, its glowing eyes scanning the village. He knew Yuki was right. He had painted a target on his back—not just for himself, but for the wolf as well.
"I'll figure it out," he said finally. "I have to."
Yuki sighed, running a hand through her hair. "Just be careful, alright? The last thing we need is for this village to become a battleground."
With that, she turned and walked away, leaving Reiji alone with his thoughts.
---
That evening, Reiji sat on a hill overlooking the village, the dire wolf lying beside him. Aeris hovered nearby, her tiny form bathed in the light of the setting sun.
"You really have a knack for making things difficult for yourself," she said, her tone teasing but not unkind.
Reiji smirked. "I didn't ask for this talent, you know. But I'm not going to waste it, either."
Aeris tilted her head, studying him. "You're different from the others. Most players would use a talent like Fateweaver for personal gain—amassing power, wealth, fame. But you..." She trailed off, a thoughtful look in her eyes.
"But what?" Reiji prompted.
"You seem more interested in changing the world than in changing yourself," Aeris finished. "It's... unusual. Admirable, even."
Reiji leaned back, staring up at the sky. "I don't know about all that. I just want to see where this path takes me. If I can make the game more interesting along the way, then why not?"
Aeris chuckled softly. "Well, you've certainly succeeded in that. But don't forget—this is just the beginning. The more you use your power, the more the world will change. And not all of those changes will be under your control."
Reiji nodded, her words sinking in. He didn't fully understand the extent of his Fateweaver ability yet, but he knew one thing for certain: it was unlike anything else in Eternal Realms. And it was up to him to decide how to use it.
As the stars began to appear in the sky, Reiji closed his eyes, the weight of the day's events pressing down on him. Tomorrow would bring new challenges, new choices, and new consequences. But for now, he allowed himself a moment of quiet, the dire wolf's steady breathing beside him a reassuring presence.
