Chapter 5 - chapter 5, the detective

Anna's heart raced as she crept through the dimly lit hallway, the soft carpet muffling her footsteps. She paused outside Mary's door, listening intently for any sounds that might indicate she was still awake. The faint hum of music drifted from inside, a melodic backdrop that both calmed and heightened Anna's nerves.

Taking a deep breath, she turned the doorknob slowly, wincing at the slight creak it made. The door swung open, revealing a room filled with posters of bands and scattered books. Moonlight poured in through the window, casting a silvery glow over the mess. Anna's eyes darted around, searching for anything that might reveal Mary's secret.

She tiptoed inside, her mind racing with possibilities. What was Mary hiding?

Anna rifled through drawers, flipping through magazines and tossing aside clothes. But as she rummaged through the clutter, her disappointment grew. There was nothing out of the ordinary-just the typical chaos of a teenager's room.

Frustrated, Anna sat on the edge of the bed, her mind spinning. She had thought this would be a straightforward mission, but now she felt more lost than ever. Maybe spying wasn't enough; maybe she needed to take a different approach.

As she contemplated her next move, her phone buzzed in her pocket. It was a message from Daniel: *"We need to talk. Meet me at the café?"*

Anna's heart sank. Daniel had been her partner in crime for years, but lately, he had been acting strangely. Still, she knew he had skills-skills that could help her uncover whatever it was Mary was hiding.

At the café, Anna found Daniel sitting in a corner booth, his laptop open in front of him. He looked up as she approached, his expression serious.

"I need your help," Anna said, sliding into the seat across from him. "I think Mary is hiding something, but I can't figure out what it is."

Daniel raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "What do you want me to do?"

"I was thinking... can you hack her phone? Maybe there's something on there that can give us a clue," Anna suggested, her voice barely above a whisper.

Daniel hesitated, glancing around as if to ensure no one was listening. "You know that's risky, right? If we get caught..."

"I know," Anna interrupted, urgency flooding her voice. "But I have to know what's going on. I can't just let this go."

After a moment of silence, Daniel sighed and nodded reluctantly. "Okay. I'll see what I can do. "

Anna felt a rush of relief mixed with adrenaline. They were in deep now, but she couldn't shake the feeling that they were about to uncover something much bigger than either of them had anticipated. As they plotted their next steps, Anna couldn't help but wonder just how far they were willing to go to unearth Mary's secrets.

Anna and Daniel huddled in the corner of Daniel's room, the glow of his laptop illuminating their faces as they leaned closer to the screen. The air was thick with tension and excitement, a mix of fear and determination swirling around them.

"Okay, I think I'm in," Daniel said, his fingers flying across the keyboard. "Just give me a second to find her call logs."

Anna held her breath, her heart pounding in her chest. She couldn't believe they were actually doing this. A few minutes later, Daniel's face lit up with triumph.

"Got it! Here's a call from Mary to someone named Ali," he said, clicking on the audio file. They both leaned in closer, straining to hear the muffled conversation that began to play.

"-I just need to know if you found anything," Mary's voice came through, shaky but resolute. "It's been months, and I can't keep waiting for answers."

"Trust me, Mary. I'm doing everything I can," replied a deeper voice that Anna recognized as Ali's. "But this case is complicated. Your mother's disappearance isn't just a random event; there are layers to it. I've hired some contacts to dig deeper."

Anna exchanged a glance with Daniel, her stomach twisting with unease.

"Have you found out anything about the last person she was with?" Mary pressed, her voice tinged with desperation.

"I have a lead, but I need more time. I'll keep you posted," Ali said. "Just remember, it's important to be careful. You don't want to draw attention to yourself."

The call ended abruptly, leaving an echo of silence in the room. Anna felt a chill run down her spine. "A private detective? Why would she hire someone? And what does he know about her mom?"

Daniel turned to her, his expression serious. "We need to find out who this guy is and what he's uncovered. If Mary's looking for answers, maybe we can help her-or at least figure out what's really going on."

"Right," Anna said, her mind racing. "Let's research him. If he's investigating Mary's mom, he might have information that could lead us somewhere."

Daniel nodded, already typing furiously again. "I'll search for any private detectives in the area who might match the name Ali mentioned. We can see if there are any reports or reviews about him."

As Daniel scrolled through various websites and forums, Anna felt a surge of determination. This was bigger than just Mary's secret; it was about uncovering the truth behind her mother's disappearance-a mystery that had haunted Mary for so long.

"Here!" Daniel exclaimed suddenly. "I found something-there's a private investigator named Ali Thompson who specializes in missing persons cases. He has a decent reputation and has worked on a few high-profile cases."

Anna leaned in closer, scanning the screen. "What else does it say?"

"He's based in the city and has been in the business for over a decade," Daniel continued. "There are some testimonials from clients who say he's thorough and discreet."

"What about his current cases?" Anna asked, her curiosity piqued.

"I don't see anything specific listed, but there's an email address here," Daniel said, pointing at the screen. "We could reach out to him directly and see if he'd be willing to share any information."

"Do you think that's a good idea?" Anna hesitated, unsure of how far they should push this.

"We won't mention Mary or anything personal," Daniel reassured her. "Just act like we're interested in hiring him for our own reasons. If he knows something about her mom, he might be willing to share it."

Anna took a deep breath, weighing the risks against the potential rewards. "Okay, let's do it."

As they composed an email together, Anna couldn't shake the feeling that they were stepping into something much larger than themselves. But she knew they had to act fast-if Mary was involved with this detective, they needed to find out what he knew before it was too late. The truth was out there, and they were determined to uncover it, no matter what it took.

The afternoon sun streamed through the tall windows of the small café where Anna and Daniel had agreed to meet Ali. The air was filled with the rich aroma of coffee, mingling with the sound of quiet conversations and the clinking of cups. Anna fidgeted in her seat, her heart racing as she glanced at her watch. They were early, but the anticipation felt electric.

"Do you think he'll show?" Anna asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Daniel shrugged, his eyes scanning the entrance. "He's a professional. If he agreed to meet us, he'll be here."

Just then, the door swung open, and a tall man with dark hair and an easy smile stepped inside. He wore a crisp button-up shirt and jeans, exuding an air of confidence that made him stand out among the casual crowd. Anna's stomach flipped as he approached their table.

"Anna? Daniel?" he said, extending a hand to each of them. "I'm Ali Thompson. Thanks for meeting me."

"Thanks for coming," Daniel replied, shaking his hand firmly. Anna followed suit, trying to mask her nerves with a smile.

They settled into their seats, and Ali ordered a coffee before turning his attention back to them. "So, what can I do for you two?"

Anna exchanged a glance with Daniel, who gave her a subtle nod. "We're actually looking to expand our agency," she began, her voice steadier than she felt. "We specialize in investigative work, and we could use someone with your expertise on our team."

Ali raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "Your agency? I've heard some good things about you both. What kind of cases do you usually handle?"

Daniel leaned forward, eager to engage. "Mostly corporate investigations and background checks, but we want to branch out into missing persons and personal cases. We believe there's a real need for that kind of work right now."

Ali took a sip of his coffee, considering their proposal. "That's ambitious. Missing persons cases can be complicated and emotionally charged. What makes you think you're ready for that?"

Anna felt her heart race as she leaned in closer. "We've already started working on one case-actually, it's very personal to us. A friend of ours is looking for her mother who disappeared years ago. We want to help her find answers."

Ali studied them for a moment, his expression shifting from curiosity to understanding. "That's commendable," he said slowly. "But you need to know that this line of work can be dangerous. It's not just about finding people; it's about dealing with the fallout."

"We're aware of the risks," Daniel interjected. "But we're committed to doing this right. We know we can learn from someone like you-your experience would be invaluable."

Ali leaned back in his chair, contemplating their words. "So you want me to join your agency and help you navigate these waters?"

"Yes," Anna said earnestly. "We believe that together we can make a real difference for families who are searching for their loved ones."

He took another sip of his coffee, his gaze piercing as he weighed their proposal. "I appreciate your passion, but I have my own cases and commitments. It wouldn't be easy for me to just jump ship."

"We understand," Daniel replied quickly. "But think about it: if you joined us, you'd have the freedom to take on cases that matter to you personally while also helping us build something meaningful."

Ali considered this for a moment before speaking again. "What's your plan if I agree? How do you see our collaboration working?"

Anna felt a surge of excitement as she outlined their vision. "We'd work together on cases-sharing resources and insights. You'd have input on how we operate, and we'd ensure that your expertise is front and center in our investigations."

Ali nodded slowly, his interest clearly piqued. "You've thought this through."

"More than we ever expected," Daniel added with a grin.

After several moments of silence, Ali finally spoke again. "Alright, I'm intrigued. Let's discuss specifics-what kind of support can you offer me? And what do you expect in return?"

As they delved into the details, Anna felt a wave of relief wash over her. This was it-the beginning of something bigger than they had imagined. With Ali's experience on their side, they could tackle not only Mary's case but also help countless others find closure.

The conversation flowed easily as they mapped out their ideas, each suggestion igniting a new spark of enthusiasm among them. Anna couldn't shake the feeling that they were on the brink of something monumental-a chance to make a real impact in people's lives.

As they wrapped up the meeting, Ali leaned back in his chair with a thoughtful expression. "I'll consider your offer seriously," he said with a nod. "But know this: if I join you, I'll expect full commitment from both of you."

"Absolutely," Anna replied, her voice filled with determination. "We won't let you down."

As they exchanged contact information and finalized plans for their next meeting, Anna couldn't help but feel that they had taken a significant step forward-not just for themselves but for ev

eryone who had ever searched for answers in the shadows of uncertainty. Together, they were ready to shine a light on the truth.
