Chapter 15 - The Hunt Begins

The next morning, the team gathered at the outskirts of the hub world. Arjun had sent a cryptic message ahead: "Coordinates verified. Bring everything you've got." The location wasn't on any standard map—a ruined fortress at the edge of a desolate wasteland, surrounded by storms so severe they were said to tear apart even the strongest players.

Eli adjusted the straps on his gear as the system notification chimed.

New Mission: The Defector's Refuge

Locate the Defector hidden in the Stormveil Wastes. Warning: High-risk zone with adaptive hazards.

He smirked. "Adaptive hazards? Sounds like my kind of party."

Yumi rolled her eyes. "For once, take this seriously. The wastes aren't just dangerous—they're unpredictable. If we're not careful, this mission could be our last."

Arjun, already checking his equipment, looked up. "She's right. The storms can strip away system protections. You'll feel pain, hunger, exhaustion—everything we usually don't have to deal with here."

Eli's smirk faltered slightly, but he covered it with a shrug. "Well, that's just great. So we're basically walking into a deathtrap?"

"More or less," Arjun replied, deadpan.

Yumi tightened the straps on her gloves, her expression unreadable. "Then we don't waste time. The longer we stay in the wastes, the more vulnerable we'll be. Let's move."

The transition from the bustling hub world to the desolate wasteland was abrupt. The air crackled with energy, and the ground beneath them was a patchwork of cracked earth and jagged obsidian. Violent winds howled, carrying with them shards of glowing sand that stung on contact.

Eli shielded his face with his arm. "You weren't kidding about this place. It's like walking through a blender."

Yumi consulted her system interface, squinting against the swirling dust. "The defector's coordinates are still a few miles out. If we keep heading north—"

A sudden roar cut her off. From the haze emerged a massive creature—a fusion of stone and storm, its eyes glowing like molten lava.

System Alert: Apex Guardian Detected.

Level 70. Threat Level: Extreme.

Eli drew his blade, his grin returning despite the danger. "Finally, some action!"

Yumi grabbed his arm before he could charge. "Are you insane? That thing's way above our level. We need a plan."

Arjun had already begun moving, pulling out a small device from his pouch. He pressed a button, and a glowing barrier surrounded them, temporarily shielding them from the creature's attacks.

"This won't hold for long," he said. "Yumi, can you find a weakness?"

Yumi's fingers flew across her interface, scanning the guardian's data. "Its core is unstable. If we can overload it, the creature should collapse."

"Great," Eli said, tightening his grip on his sword. "How do we do that?"

Yumi hesitated. "The fastest way would be to feed it energy. But we'd need to get close—and that's suicide."

Eli smirked. "Suicide missions are kind of my specialty."

Before anyone could stop him, he darted out of the barrier, weaving through the storm. The guardian roared again, swiping at him with massive, clawed hands. Eli ducked and rolled, narrowly avoiding being crushed.

"Eli, fall back!" Yumi shouted.

"No time!" Eli called over his shoulder. "Just cover me!"

Arjun gritted his teeth, drawing his own weapon—a sleek, double-edged glaive that crackled with energy. "I'll keep it distracted. Yumi, prepare the overload."

The next few moments were a blur of chaos. Arjun engaged the guardian, his movements precise and deliberate, while Yumi worked frantically to configure a device capable of destabilizing the creature's core.

Eli, meanwhile, was a blur of motion, darting around the guardian's legs and slashing at its joints. The creature roared in frustration, its massive frame shaking the ground with every step.

"Now!" Yumi shouted, throwing the device toward Eli.

He caught it mid-air and leapt onto the guardian's back, driving the device into the glowing core on its chest. Energy crackled and surged, and the creature let out a deafening roar before collapsing in a cloud of dust and light.

The storm began to settle, and the team regrouped, battered but alive.

"Remind me to never let you plan anything again," Yumi muttered, glaring at Eli.

"Hey, we won, didn't we?" he replied, grinning.

Arjun didn't join the banter. His gaze was fixed on the horizon, where the faint outline of a crumbling fortress was now visible. "We're here," he said quietly.

The others followed his gaze, their expressions hardening.

The fortress was a shadow of its former self, its walls crumbling and overgrown with strange, glowing vines. The air was eerily still, the only sound the faint hum of the artifact in Yumi's pack.

As they entered, a voice echoed from the shadows.

"So, you've found me."

A figure stepped into the dim light—a woman with sharp features and piercing green eyes. She wore tattered robes that had once been elegant, now faded and frayed. Her presence was commanding despite her disheveled appearance.

"You're the defector," Arjun said, stepping forward.

The woman's eyes flicked to him, then to the others. "And you're the fools carrying the artifact. Do you even realize what you've brought here?"

"We're trying to stop Azrael," Yumi said, her voice firm.

The woman laughed bitterly. "Stop him? You're barely pawns in his game. The artifact you carry is a trap, designed to lure you deeper into his web."

Eli crossed his arms. "Then why don't you tell us how to break it?"

The woman's expression softened, her gaze lingering on the artifact. "Breaking it won't save you. But if you're willing to risk everything, there might be another way."

She stepped closer, her voice dropping to a whisper. "The Core Codex isn't just Azrael's power—it's his weakness. If you can unlock it, you might have a chance to rewrite the system itself. But it will come at a cost."

"What cost?" Yumi asked warily.

The defector's eyes darkened. "Everything."
