Chapter 1.
"Hey Adam, so you finally landed that professor gig at Hogwarts, huh?" Arthur said, perched on his desk that looked like it might topple over any second, while sipping his tea.
Adam, the subject of Arthur's question, just smiled back. To Arthur, it seemed like getting the job at Hogwarts was as easy as enjoying a cup of tea. Little did he know the mountain of work and endless questions Adam had faced to secure that position. It had even cost him precious time with his girlfriend, leading to a heartbreaking breakup.
But Adam wasn't about to share all that with anyone; instead, he beamed at Arthur and lifted his own tiny teacup. Taking a sip, he joked, "Well, something like that! You might want to warn the kids in your house to behave while I'm at Hogwarts; otherwise, I might just turn into the strictest professor they've ever seen!"
"Haha, you can certainly give it a shot! You know, Adam, if you manage to tone down their antics even a little, I might just consider that favor you asked me about when you turned eighteen," Arthur replied, chuckling as he reminisced about the times Adam used to visit and help out with Molly's chores.
"Are you serious, old man? Cough... Anyway, it's not like I'm still interested in her or anything," Adam said, trying to play it cool while secretly thrilled about the offer, all while continuing to sip his tea.
After a few more minutes of lighthearted banter that drifted across various topics, Adam suddenly remembered he had shopping to do for his new job. He jumped up from his chair and said, "Alright then, Mr. Weasley, with only three days left before the semester kicks off at Hogwarts, I better get my shopping started." Just as he was about to leave, he heard Arthur call out from behind him.
"Sure thing! By the way, we're hosting a small dinner at home on the kids' request. You're welcome to swing by if you want!"
A smile crept onto Adam's face at the invitation, but instead of turning back to respond, he continued on his way to the Auror department to hand in his resignation letter.
...
"Hey Albina, is Rufus in?" Adam asked, letter in hand, as he approached the large desk in front of the Auror head office, where a stunning woman with white hair sat.
Albina looked up at the sound of his voice, her face lighting up with a smile as she absentmindedly played with a strand of her hair.
"Auror Adam! He's inside, but fair warning—the old guy isn't in the best mood right now, so maybe hold off on going in for a bit."
"Got it! Thanks for the heads up, love. By the way, if you're free tomorrow, I'm checking out a new restaurant in Diagon Alley tomorrow and could use some company. Would you do me the honor?" Adam asked, fully aware of Albina's crush on him. He figured it was a nice way to enjoy his last days in this hectic place before moving on.
"Wait, are you really asking me out on a date?" Albina exclaimed, her heart racing at the thought of the most handsome guy in the Ministry of Magic asking her. She nearly leaped out of her chair but quickly composed herself, giving a cute little cough before saying, "Well, since it's you asking, I can definitely make some time to keep you company!"
Adam couldn't help but smile at her response. He bowed slightly and said, "Thank you for your kindness, my lady." Albina felt a warm glow inside, excited at the thought of finally expressing her feelings during their dinner.
"Alright then, I'll go tackle the angry lion now that I have the blessing of such a lovely lady," he said with a playful grin. He knocked on the door twice and stepped into the Head Auror's office. As soon as he entered, he understood why Albina had mentioned that Rufus wasn't in the best mood.
The old man, looking every bit like an angry lion, was buried under a mountain of parchment. Just glancing at the thick stack gave Adam a headache.
"Mister Smith, how can I assist you?" Scrimgeour asked, peering over the pile with a somewhat intimidating expression.
"Not much, sir. I just wanted to hand in my resignation letter because I've been accepted as a professor at Hogwarts." Adam walked over to the desk and placed the letter on top of the towering files.
"Hogwarts, huh? Did old Albus really accept you?" Scrimgeour asked, his tone casual as he continued to sift through the papers.
"Yes, he did, but it wasn't easy," Adam replied, taking a seat. It seemed like the Head Auror had something more to say before letting him go.
"That means you passed some sort of character test of his," Scrimgeour said suddenly. After a moment of silence, he continued, "You know, there was a time when I wanted to teach at Hogwarts too, to experience the excitement of guiding those eager kids. But I realized it wasn't for me, so I became an Auror instead. Now I hold a position of authority. I see that same potential in you, Adam, and I hope you'll find your way back there one day."
With that, the old man fell silent, leaving Adam to rise from his chair. "Thank you for your advice, sir. I'll keep it in mind," he said as he walked out, feeling a wave of relief wash over him.
As soon as he stepped outside, Albina's beautiful face appeared again, easing the tension in his mind.
"Thanks to you, I managed to survive, and now I get to have a date night with such a kind lady," Adam said with a warm smile, leaning against the table. Albina felt a flutter in her chest, struggling to resist the urge to lean in and kiss him. Just then, they heard the old man shouting from his office, prompting her to whisper, "Alright then, I'll see you tomorrow, Professor Smith."
