Chapter 36 - Ch 36: Gathering Intel

The settlement was unlike the ones Kael and Mira were used to. It wasn't a shantytown of desperate survivors eking out a meager existence in the Blanks—it was a bustling hive of activity. Underground markets, shadowy deals, and whispered conversations filled the air. The narrow alleys were lined with stalls selling scavenged technology, unmarked weapons, and questionable goods. The faint hum of a generator provided electricity to flickering lights that barely illuminated the chaos.

Kael and Mira walked cautiously through the crowded streets, their eyes darting to every potential threat. Mira's hand rested on the grip of her rifle, while Kael carried a small, concealed device in his coat—a precautionary measure in case things went south.

"This place reeks of trouble," Mira muttered, her voice low.

"Good," Kael replied, scanning the crowd. "Trouble tends to know things."

They moved deeper into the market until they reached a tent at the far end. Inside, a grizzled man sat at a table cluttered with maps, charts, and half-empty glasses of murky liquid. His face was a patchwork of scars, his left eye clouded and milky. Despite his rough appearance, there was an intelligence in his remaining eye that suggested he was more than just a common scavenger.

Mira stepped forward, placing both hands on the table. "We're looking for a way out of the Blanks. Quietly."

The man looked up, his expression unreadable at first. Then his lips curled into a sly smile, revealing several missing teeth. "Quietly, huh? You're asking a lot in a place like this."

Kael stepped beside her and set a small pouch of credits on the table. The man's fingers moved with surprising speed, pulling the pouch toward him and loosening the drawstring. He peered inside, the glint of coins reflecting in his one good eye. Satisfied, he nodded and spread out a well-worn map.

"There's a neutral zone about 100 klicks east of here," he said, tapping a section of the map with a calloused finger. "It's outside Consortium jurisdiction, but getting there isn't exactly a stroll through the park. The border's heavily patrolled—checkpoints every ten miles."

Mira frowned, her eyes narrowing. "And the gaps in their patrols?"

The man chuckled, a dry, rasping sound that made the hairs on the back of her neck stand on end. "You're sharp. There's a supply route used by smugglers. It cuts through the hills here." He traced a line with his finger. "It's risky, but it's your best shot."

Kael leaned closer, studying the map. "What kind of risk are we talking about?"

The man's smile faded, replaced by a grim seriousness. "The kind you don't walk away from if you're not careful. There's a new officer in charge of the border. Name's Captain Elias Thorn. Heard of him?"

Mira shook her head. "No. Should we have?"

The man sighed, leaning back in his chair. "Depends on how much you value your lives. Thorn's not your average Consortium lackey. He's a hunter. They say he tracks defectors personally, and when he catches them…" The man's voice trailed off, but the implication was clear.

Kael rolled up the map and tucked it into his coat. "We'll take our chances."

The man snorted, shaking his head. "Suit yourselves. But if Thorn catches wind of you, it's over."

As they left the market, the weight of the man's warning hung over them. Mira glanced at Kael, her expression a mix of curiosity and concern. "You realize this Thorn guy isn't going to make it easy for us, right?"

Kael didn't respond immediately. He was lost in thought, his mind already formulating plans, calculating risks. Finally, he spoke, his voice cold and deliberate. "I don't care."

Mira raised an eyebrow. "You don't care? That's not exactly reassuring, Kael."

He stopped walking and turned to face her. "If Thorn wants to stop us, he'll have to deal with me first. I will cover every inch of this land in a fog whispering death if I have to."

Mira stared at him, searching his face for any hint of hesitation. She found none. "You're serious," she said, more a statement than a question.

"Deadly serious," Kael replied, turning back toward the crawler. "We've come too far to stop now."

That night, they parked the crawler in a secluded spot, hidden among a cluster of boulders. The moon cast a pale light over the landscape, and the only sounds were the faint rustling of the wind and the occasional distant howl of some unknown creature.

Kael spread the map out on a portable workbench, tracing the smuggler's route with his finger. Mira leaned against the side of the crawler, cleaning her rifle.

"So, what's the plan?" she asked, breaking the silence.

Kael didn't look up. "We stick to the route as much as possible. Avoid patrols, keep our heads down, and move quickly."

Mira smirked. "Sounds simple enough."

Kael finally looked at her, his expression deadpan. "It never is."

Mira chuckled, shaking her head. "You're such an optimist."

He ignored the comment and went back to studying the map. After a moment, he spoke again. "We'll need to make some modifications to the crawler. If Thorn's as good as they say, we'll need every advantage we can get."

Mira nodded, her smirk fading. "What kind of modifications?"

"More armor, better defenses," Kael said. "And I've been working on a new type of smokescreen—denser, more corrosive. It should give us the edge we need to slip past the patrols."

Mira raised an eyebrow. "You've been working on this without telling me?"

Kael shrugged. "I like to be prepared."

She shook her head, a small smile playing at the corners of her lips. "You're something else, Kael."

"Let's hope that's enough," he replied, rolling up the map.

As dawn broke, the two of them began their preparations. Kael worked tirelessly on the crawler, installing the new modifications and testing the smokescreen device. Mira kept watch, her eyes scanning the horizon for any signs of trouble.

By the time they were ready to move, the sun was high in the sky, casting long shadows over the desolate landscape.

"Ready?" Kael asked, climbing into the driver's seat.

Mira nodded, sliding into the passenger seat and cocking her rifle. "Let's do this."

With a roar, the crawler sprang to life, its reinforced frame glinting in the sunlight. Kael steered it onto the smuggler's route, their journey into the unknown beginning in earnest.

As the Blanks faded into the distance behind them, Mira glanced at Kael. "Here's to hoping this Thorn guy doesn't live up to the hype."

Kael didn't respond. He was focused on the road ahead, his mind already preparing for the challenges to come.

And so, their next chapter began.
