Chapter 28 - The Real Goods

"I'll… I'll get Marlowe," Elliot said, his voice strained with the sudden realization of what was happening. Without another word, he quickly turned and rushed into the back of the shop.

In the back, Marlowe was meticulously sorting through some trinkets when Elliot arrived, nearly breathless.

"Marlowe, there's a woman out front. She's asking for the real mystical items."

Marlowe's expression didn't change, but his eyes narrowed slightly. "Is that so?" He stood, brushing the dust off his coat. "I suppose we'd best not keep her waiting."

The two of them made their way back to the counter. The woman was still there, standing silently, as if she were already part of the shop itself.

Marlowe approached, his eyes scanning the woman with a steady, almost predatory focus. "What is it you're after?" he asked bluntly, his voice gruff but sharp.

The woman met his gaze without hesitation, her sharp eyes unflinching. "I've heard of this place from a friend—Vivian. She told me this was where I could find something to protect myself."

Marlowe's expression shifted slightly at the mention of Vivian, and a flicker of recognition passed through his eyes. For a brief moment, his usual confident demeanor faltered, as though the name stirred something in him that he hadn't expected. His lips pressed together, and his gaze seemed distant for just an instant, as if he were recalling something from the past. After a long, silent pause, he nodded, his voice softer now, tinged with a quiet, almost reluctant respect.

"Vivian's recommendations are rarely wrong," Marlowe muttered, his tone carrying a weight that spoke volumes. "She has a knack for seeing potential, even in the most unlikely of places."

Here's a more detailed version of that moment:

Elliot's pulse quickened, the air around him suddenly charged with a sense of anticipation. Marlowe's fingers moved with practiced ease, pressing a hidden switch beneath the counter. For a brief, heart-stopping moment, Elliot wondered if something was wrong—until the counter itself gave a low, mechanical hum. Slowly, it shifted, the wood creaking slightly as a hidden compartment was revealed.

Inside, the compartment gleamed under the soft lighting, revealing an assortment of mystical items, their surfaces catching the light in strange, almost otherworldly ways. Some shimmered faintly, as though the very air around them had bent to their will, while others radiated an unsettling calm. The items were stacked neatly, their forms partially obscured by the shadows of the compartment, but each one seemed to pulse with its own unique energy, like dormant sentinels waiting to be chosen. The air felt thicker, as though the very atmosphere had become charged with the weight of the objects' presence.

Elliot quickly activated his [Observation] skill, his senses heightening as he began to assess the items on display. Nine objects, each with its own peculiar aura, were laid out before him. He quickly scanned through them, reading their names and descriptions:

___________________________

Enchanted Item: Enchanted Ribbon of Darkness

Description: A simple ribbon woven from fine threads of silver, which emits a dark fog when activated. The fog is soft and subtle, enough to obscure the user's presence while standing still during the night. While useful for stealth in dark environments, it provides little protection or utility outside of those conditions.

___________________________

Enchanted Item: Mirror of Serenity

Description: A polished mirror framed with soft silver vines. When gazed into, it reflects not only the person's image but also instills a deep sense of calm. It has no mystical effect beyond its soothing aura, offering comfort to those in distress.

___________________________

Enchanted Item: Cloak of Mending

Description: A deep green cloak with threads of gold woven into its fabric. The cloak has the ability to accelerate the healing process for minor cuts, bruises, or sprains. While it can speed up recovery, its effect is limited to only minor injuries, making it of little use in more severe situations.

___________________________

Enchanted Item: Silver Crescent Pendant

Description: A delicate silver pendant shaped like a crescent moon, hanging from a thin chain. Wearing the pendant boosts the wearer's confidence, allowing them to face challenges with a slight increase in self-assurance. The effects are purely psychological and don't grant any physical enhancements.

___________________________

Enchanted Item: Bramble Dust Pouch

Description: A small leather pouch filled with what appears to be a fine, greenish powder. When sprinkled, it summons small, harmless vines that can entangle minor threats like rodents or insects.

___________________________

Sealed Artifact: The Dead Man's Ring

Grade: 3

Appearance: A simple silver ring with an intricate etching of a skull in the center. It has a faint, eerie glow when held under light.

Function: The ring grants temporary invulnerability against a fatal attack. The wearer is protected from death for a short period, but the invulnerability is only partial—blocked strikes will cause the user intense, excruciating pain.

Downside: The pain experienced from blocked attacks can linger long after the ring's effect has ended, causing intense physical discomfort and sometimes permanent nerve damage.

___________________________

Sealed Artifact: The Hourglass of Fate

Grade: 3

Appearance: A small, ornate hourglass made of gold and glass, with sands that shimmer faintly in the light. The top and bottom are marked with symbols of various phases of the moon.

Function: When activated, the hourglass allows the user to glimpse their "River of Fate"—a visual representation of their life's path, with markers indicating key moments. These markers shift, revealing the possibility of death and showing the user the precise moment they might meet their end. The artifact doesn't stop death but warns the user of it.

Downside: The knowledge of one's inevitable death causes the user intense anxiety, with each glimpse revealing a growing sense of doom. The more often the artifact is used, the more the user becomes obsessed with their fate, often losing focus on their present reality and making reckless decisions out of fear.

___________________________

Sealed Artifact: The Siren's Song Locket

Grade: 3

Appearance: A silver locket with a small, glowing gem in the center. When opened, a soft, eerie hum emanates from it, resembling a haunting melody.

Function: The locket protects the user from mental influence and manipulative magic, creating a barrier against psychic attacks.

Downside: Prolonged use of the locket causes intense emotional fluctuations, making the user prone to sudden bursts of extreme joy or sorrow. These emotional surges can cause temporary disorientation or erratic behavior.

___________________________

Sealed Artifact: The Silver Scarab Amulet

Grade: 2

Appearance: A beautifully crafted amulet shaped like a scarab beetle, its wings intricately etched with ancient symbols. The amulet is made of polished silver and has an iridescent sheen.

Function: The amulet offers a versatile range of defensive abilities. It can absorb a variety of physical and magical attacks and convert them into energy, which the wearer can use to protect themselves.

Downside: The user may occasionally lose control of their own body, as the energy surges overwhelm the wearer, causing involuntary movements or paralysis.

As Elliot processed the information, Marlowe began to explain each item's function aloud to the woman, who listened attentively.

After hearing the descriptions, the woman stepped forward, her gaze lingering on the artifacts as she considered her options. She paused in front of The Dead Man's Ring and then The Silver Scarab Amulet before finally settling on The Dead Man's Ring.

"That one," she said, her voice firm. "It's what I need."

Marlowe nodded, taking the ring from the display and weighing it in his hand. "The price for this one is 1,200 pounds," he stated. "It's a Grade 3 Sealed Artifact, though it's not as powerful as the Grade 2 items. Its ability to save your life in a moment of danger is invaluable, but be warned—when it activates, you'll feel the pain of any blocked attack you've sustained."

The woman considered the offer for a moment, her eyes flickering with indecision before she nodded decisively. "I'll take it."

Marlowe moved quickly, preparing the transaction. A few moments later, the woman handed over the requested amount, and Marlowe exchanged it for the artifact. She carefully tucked the ring into her coat, her fingers brushing against the cool metal.

"Thank you," she said, giving a smile that bordered on seductive as she turned to leave. "Goodbye, Marlowe… Elliot."

With that, she exited the shop, leaving the door to chime softly behind her.

Marlowe stood still for a moment, watching her departure. After a brief pause, he reached under the counter and pulled out a shotgun, its cold metal gleaming in the light.

"When did you...," Elliot froze, his eyes wide in disbelief. The sudden appearance of the weapon was enough to make his heart race. He had known Marlowe to be cautious, but this was beyond anything he expected.

"You think I trust every customer that walks in here?" he muttered with a chuckle, the weight of the weapon evident in his hands. "Never know when one might try to make off with something more than they bargained for."

Elliot, still processing the encounter, simply nodded in silence, knowing that this world was full of dangers that could spring from the most unsuspecting of places.
