The flames licked at the crumbling remains of the village, casting flickering shadows that danced like specters on the ground. Screams and cries of panic filled the night, but amidst the chaos, a young girl's wails rose above it all.
Her tiny frame trembled as she clung desperately to her mother, who lay on the scorched earth, her breaths shallow and labored.
The woman's face, though smudged with ash and dirt, held a haunting beauty. Her gentle smile defied the pain that racked her body, her serene expression a stark contrast to the devastation around them.
She raised a trembling hand to her daughter's cheek, brushing away a tear with a tenderness that belied her fading strength.
"Mama, please don't leave me," the little girl sobbed, her voice breaking with desperation.
The woman's voice was barely a whisper, but it carried the weight of a mother's love. "Listen to me, my sweet one. You must be strong... stronger than I ever was." She paused, her chest heaving as she fought for air. "Promise me, you will live a life full of happiness. Never... never do anything that will take that away from you."
Tears streamed down the girl's soot-streaked face as she shook her head, unable to accept the inevitable. "I can't do it without you, Mama. I need you."
The woman's hand fumbled at her side before producing a small, mysterious object. She placed it in her daughter's hands, her fingers trembling with the effort. "Take this," she murmured. "Keep it safe... and only use it when you are in your darkest hour. It will protect you. Never lose it. Never."
"Mama," the girl cried, clutching it tightly.
"I love you, my sweet little daughter," the woman said, her voice fading. Her eyes, dulling with the weight of death, still managed to shine with love. "more than anything in this world."
With those final words, her hand went limp, and the light in her eyes extinguished.
"MAMAAAAA!"
The little girl's anguished scream pierced the night, echoing through the burning ruins. She buried her face against her mother's still chest, her small body wracked with sobs.
"We have to go now!" A rough voice jolted her from her grief. A man—his face hardened by years of struggle—knelt beside her, urgency etched into his features. He glanced over his shoulder at the encroaching flames. "It's not safe here anymore."
"No! Don't!" the girl cried, resisting as he scooped her into his arms. "Mama! Please, don't leave her!"
The man's jaw tightened, but he said nothing.
He hoisted her onto his horse and mounted swiftly. The girl's screams tore at his resolve as she reached out toward her mother's lifeless form, her small hands clawing at the air as though she could will her back to life.
"Mama!" she wailed, her cries breaking into heart-wrenching agony. The horse surged forward, its hooves pounding against the earth as the man spurred it into a gallop. Her screams echoed in the night, mingling with the chaos of destruction, until they faded into the distance, leaving only the crackling of flames and the silence of loss behind.
