Chapter 13: Roots of the Forest
Jack's Perspective
The Command Center was alive with activity as Jack prepared for his meeting with the elves. The emissary's words from earlier still echoed in his mind. "Vaeloria wishes to meet with you. She offers diplomacy—for now."
Diplomacy wasn't Jack's preferred approach, but it was an opportunity to gather intelligence. The elves weren't just another group of primitives—they were organized, magical, and deeply entrenched in the forest. Understanding their history and motivations could reveal weaknesses he could exploit later if necessary.
Eve's voice interrupted his thoughts. "Commander, the meeting location has been verified by reconnaissance drones. It's a neutral zone at the forest's edge, approximately 15 kilometers from the forward base."
Jack nodded. "What's the terrain like?"
"Dense forest," Eve replied. "Limited visibility but minimal elevation changes. Tactical advantage remains neutral unless they utilize their magic."
"Understood," Jack said. "Deploy a transport vehicle and a squad of five clones for security. I'll handle the rest."
Unit 01 stepped forward. "Are you certain you want to attend this meeting personally, Commander? It could be a trap."
Jack smirked. "If it's a trap, I want to be the one springing it."
The Meeting
The transport vehicle stopped just short of the agreed meeting point, a wide clearing surrounded by ancient trees that seemed to hum with life. The forest air was thick with the scent of moss and flowers, a stark contrast to the sterile metallic tang of Jack's outpost.
Jack stepped out of the vehicle, flanked by his security detail. His black exosuit glinted faintly in the dappled sunlight, its energy shield generator humming quietly. A small group of elves stood waiting, their leader unmistakable.
Vaeloria was tall and commanding, her long silver hair flowing like a river over her intricate green armor. Her golden eyes glowed faintly as she regarded Jack with a mixture of curiosity and suspicion. Around her were three other elves—two warriors armed with longbows and a mage with a staff that crackled with faint magical energy.
"Outsider," Vaeloria said, her voice calm but firm. "I am Vaeloria, High Warden of Sylvanelle, the Eternal Forest. You stand on sacred ground."
Jack raised an eyebrow. "Sacred or not, I'm here because you asked for diplomacy."
"Diplomacy requires respect," Vaeloria replied sharply. "Your machines have none. They cut into the earth, drain the mana, and disturb the balance we've upheld for centuries."
Jack folded his arms. "Balance doesn't build nations. I'm not here to disrupt your way of life. I'm here to expand mine."
Vaeloria's golden eyes narrowed. "You think expansion comes without consequences? Perhaps you need to understand what it is you're trampling."
She gestured to the mage, who stepped forward, their staff glowing brighter. A faint light surrounded the clearing, and suddenly the forest seemed to shimmer. Visions appeared—memories of the forest's past.
The History of Sylvanelle
The visions showed the forest as it was thousands of years ago, untouched and brimming with life. Massive trees stretched toward the heavens, their branches forming natural bridges between villages hidden within the canopy. Elves worked alongside the forest, their magic harmonizing with nature to create homes, defenses, and even weapons.
Vaeloria's voice narrated the vision. "For millennia, Sylvanelle has been our sanctuary, a place of refuge and power. We have defended it from countless invaders—empires with armies, mages with greed, and even dragons seeking dominion over our mana-rich lands."
The vision shifted to a great battle. Armored knights charged through the forest, their swords glowing with magic. Elven warriors countered with swift strikes and devastating spells. The air was thick with the sound of clashing steel and shouts of battle.
"We have fought wars to protect this land," Vaeloria continued. "And we've paid dearly for it. Entire generations of our people have been lost to those who thought they could claim what wasn't theirs."
The vision faded, leaving the clearing silent. Vaeloria stepped closer to Jack, her tone cold. "Do you think you are any different? Your machines may be stronger than swords and fire, but you are still an invader."
A Stark Response
Jack met her gaze without flinching. "You think you've seen war, but you haven't seen what I'm capable of. My machines don't tire. They don't bleed. And they don't care about balance."
Vaeloria's expression darkened. "And yet, you stand here claiming you seek peace."
Jack shrugged. "Because I'm smart enough to know that working together is easier than wasting resources on a war neither of us wants."
Vaeloria studied him for a long moment, her expression unreadable. "And what exactly do you propose, outsider?"
"Cooperation," Jack said. "I'll limit my expansion into your territory—leave your sacred sites untouched. In return, you allow me access to the mana-rich zones near the forest's edge. We both gain resources, and no one has to die."
"And if we refuse?" Vaeloria asked.
Jack's voice turned cold. "Then you'll see just how different I am from the invaders you've fought before."
The silence that followed was heavy. The elven warriors shifted uneasily, their hands tightening on their weapons, but Vaeloria raised a hand to stop them.
"Your arrogance will be your downfall," she said, her tone sharp. "But for now, I will consider your offer. Know this, Jack Lawson: the forest remembers. And it will not forgive betrayal."
Back at the Command Center
As Jack returned to the outpost, Eve greeted him with an update. "Commander, surveillance indicates no immediate movement from the elves. Their forces remain concentrated within the inner forest."
Jack nodded, removing his exosuit and setting it aside. "They're playing it safe, for now."
Unit 01 entered, his tone curious. "Do you believe they'll accept your offer?"
Jack leaned back in his chair, staring at the holographic map of Sylvanelle. "It doesn't matter. Whether they agree or not, I'm preparing for war."
Eve chimed in. "Current military infrastructure is sufficient for defensive operations but limited for prolonged engagements. Would you like to allocate resources to advanced weaponry?"
"Do it," Jack said, his tone firm. "And start working on long-range artillery platforms. If the elves think they can ambush me in their forest, I'll show them what precision firepower looks like."
The Forest Watches
Deep within Sylvanelle, Vaeloria stood before her council, recounting the meeting. The elder elf stroked his beard thoughtfully. "He is bold—recklessly so. But his machines... they are unlike anything we've ever seen."
"We must act," one of the warriors said. "If we wait, he will only grow stronger."
Vaeloria shook her head. "We cannot rush this. His machines are formidable, but machines are not invincible. If we strike, it must be decisive. For now, we gather our strength and learn everything we can about these 'machines.'"
The council nodded in agreement, but the tension in the air was palpable. For the first time in centuries, the elves of Sylvanelle faced an enemy they couldn't fully understand.
