Chapter 1 - chapter 1The Awakening Call

The village of Eldoria rested under the soft embrace of twilight, its cobblestone streets glowing faintly in the light of lanterns. The air was crisp, carrying the scent of pine and wildflowers. Kaelina Ashford, an ordinary nineteen-year-old orphan, walked briskly through the quiet market square, her arms loaded with a basket of fresh bread and herbs.

Despite the serenity of her surroundings, an unease stirred in her chest. She glanced over her shoulder, feeling as though unseen eyes followed her every move. She shook her head, brushing off the paranoia. It wasn't the first time she had felt this way, but no one had ever been there when she turned to look.

"Kaelina!" a voice called out, breaking her thoughts. It was old farmer Garret, waving from his porch with a toothless smile.

"Good evening, Garret," she replied with a polite nod, forcing a smile. Her tone was friendly, but her heart raced. The sense of being watched lingered.

Reaching the modest stone cottage she called home, Kaelina set the basket on the wooden table and began sorting the supplies. The flickering light of a single candle illuminated the cozy room, casting shadows that danced across the walls. Her mind wandered to the dream she had been having for weeks—a vision of an ancient tree with golden leaves, standing in the middle of a vast, shimmering lake.

The dream felt so real that she often woke with the faint scent of the tree's blossoms in her nostrils.

A sudden knock at the door jolted her. Kaelina froze, her heart pounding in her chest. She never received visitors, especially at this hour. Slowly, she approached the door, her hand trembling as it reached for the latch.

When she opened it, there was no one there—just the cool night air and the sound of rustling leaves. But at her feet lay a small, ornate box, etched with symbols she didn't recognize.

Her breath caught. She bent down and picked it up, her fingers brushing over the intricate carvings. The box felt warm, as though it were alive.

Closing the door quickly, she placed the mysterious object on the table and sat down, her eyes fixed on it. The room seemed to grow quieter, the shadows on the walls stilling as if holding their breath.

Summoning her courage, Kaelina opened the lid. A soft, golden light spilled out, enveloping the room. Within the box lay a delicate silver pendant, shaped like a tree—the very tree from her dreams.

The moment her fingers touched the pendant, a surge of energy coursed through her, making her gasp. Visions flooded her mind: towering mountains, endless seas, and realms beyond her understanding.

A voice, deep and commanding, echoed in her head. "Kaelina Ashford, the Eternal Realms have chosen you. The balance is broken, and only you can restore it."

The pendant glowed brighter, and the shadows in the room seemed to recoil. Kaelina stared at it in disbelief, her mind reeling with questions. Who was speaking to her? What was the Eternal Realms? And why had they chosen her?

As the light faded, Kaelina clutched the pendant tightly. She didn't know what lay ahead, but one thing was certain—her life was no longer her own.

The morning sun painted the skies of Eldoria in hues of gold and crimson, but Kaelina barely noticed as she sat by her window, the silver pendant resting in her palm. The events of the previous night played over and over in her mind like a haunting melody. Who was the voice in her head? Why had it chosen her, of all people?

Her fingers traced the intricate details of the pendant—the tree's delicate branches, the roots twisting in perfect symmetry. It looked ancient yet pristine, as if untouched by time. Despite its beauty, Kaelina felt the weight of its meaning, heavy and unfamiliar.

Her thoughts were interrupted by a loud commotion outside. The sound of hooves pounding against the cobblestone streets grew louder, followed by hurried voices. Kaelina peered out of the window to see a group of armored soldiers riding into the village square, their crimson cloaks billowing behind them.

"By order of the King, no one is to leave this village!" barked the lead soldier, his voice commanding and cold. His piercing eyes scanned the gathering crowd. "We are searching for something… or someone."

Kaelina's heart raced. The pendant in her hand suddenly grew warm, almost as if it were reacting to their presence. She quickly tucked it into the pocket of her dress and stepped back from the window, her breathing shallow.

A knock at the door startled her. It was firm and deliberate. She hesitated, glancing at the table where the ornate box still sat. Could they know about it?

"Open up, by order of the King!" the voice outside demanded.

Kaelina took a deep breath and opened the door, masking her fear with a forced calmness. A young soldier, no older than twenty-five, stood there. His expression was stern, but his eyes betrayed a hint of uncertainty.

"Have you seen anything unusual? A stranger, an object, anything out of the ordinary?" he asked, scanning the room behind her.

Kaelina shook her head, her voice steady despite the turmoil inside. "No, sir. Just me and my quiet life here."

The soldier's gaze lingered for a moment longer before he nodded. "If you see or hear anything, report it immediately."

As he turned to leave, Kaelina closed the door and leaned against it, her hands trembling. She could feel the pendant's warmth against her skin, as if it were alive, reacting to her fear.

She had to find answers—about the pendant, the voice, and why the King's men were searching for something in her village. Deep down, she knew her ordinary life was slipping away, and a storm was on the horizon.

The sun was high in the sky by the time Kaelina decided she couldn't stay hidden in her cottage any longer. The pendant's warmth against her chest served as a constant reminder that something far bigger than herself was at play. She pulled her cloak tightly around her and stepped outside, blending into the bustling streets of Eldoria as if nothing had changed.

The village square was alive with activity despite the tension brought by the King's soldiers. Merchants called out their wares, children laughed and played, and the aroma of freshly baked bread wafted through the air. Yet, Kaelina couldn't shake the feeling that every shadow hid a threat.

Her destination was clear—the Eldoria Library. Though small, it housed old tomes that spoke of the village's history and whispered tales of the realms beyond. If there were answers to be found, they would be there.

The librarian, an elderly woman named Elira, glanced up from her desk as Kaelina entered. "You're early today, Kael," she said, her voice soft but sharp with curiosity.

Kaelina forced a smile. "Just looking for something new to read," she lied, though her fingers tightened around her cloak's edges.

Elira's eyes narrowed briefly before she nodded. "The back shelves might have what you're looking for. But be careful—they're dusty and full of old nonsense."

Kaelina hurried to the far corner of the library, where the air grew still and heavy. She scanned the rows of books, running her fingers along their spines until her hand paused on one—a weathered leather tome with no title.

Her heart raced as she opened it. The first page bore a single, haunting symbol: the tree from her pendant. Beneath it, an inscription read:

"The Eternal Weaver shall rise when the realms falter, chosen by the roots that bind all worlds."

Kaelina's breath caught. She flipped through the pages, her pulse quickening as she uncovered drawings of the pendant, the tree, and glowing portals leading to strange lands. Each passage hinted at powers far beyond her imagination.

But before she could read further, a shadow fell across the table. She looked up to see Captain Rowan Gray standing over her, his piercing eyes locked on the open book.

"You seem to have a talent for finding things you shouldn't," he said, his tone low and dangerous.

Kaelina's heart pounded in her chest. The pendant grew warm, almost as if urging her to act. But what could she do? Rowan's hand rested on the hilt of his sword, and escape seemed impossible.

Kaelina's mind raced as she stared up at Captain Rowan Gray. His sharp gaze moved from her face to the book, his lips curling into a faint smirk.

"You're not just some ordinary girl from Eldoria, are you?" he asked, his voice low but laced with suspicion. His fingers hovered over the hilt of his sword, ready to act at a moment's notice.

Kaelina swallowed hard, clutching the pendant beneath her cloak. She had to think fast. "I don't know what you're talking about," she said, trying to sound calm. "I'm just curious about old legends, that's all."

Rowan raised an eyebrow. "Legends, huh? And you just happen to stumble upon the very book I've been searching for."

Her pulse quickened. He knows something, she realized. The pendant burned hotter against her skin, as if it were urging her to do something—but what?

Before she could respond, the library door creaked open, and heavy footsteps echoed through the quiet space. Two more soldiers entered, their eyes scanning the room until they landed on Rowan.

"Captain," one of them said, "we've found no trace of the artifact in the village. What are your orders?"

Rowan didn't take his eyes off Kaelina. "Search the outskirts. If anyone leaves the village, detain them immediately."

The soldiers nodded and left, their footsteps fading into the distance. Rowan turned back to Kaelina, his expression unreadable. "You're hiding something," he said. "I can feel it. But…" His gaze flicked to the pendant chain peeking out from her cloak. "It seems the answer is closer than I thought."

Kaelina's heart skipped a beat. She couldn't let him take the pendant—it was her only connection to the truth.

Summoning all her courage, she gripped the pendant and whispered under her breath, "Help me."

In an instant, the pendant flared with a brilliant golden light, blinding Rowan. He stumbled back, shielding his eyes, and Kaelina seized the opportunity. She grabbed the book and bolted for the back door of the library, her footsteps echoing through the narrow hallways.

"Stop her!" Rowan shouted, his voice echoing behind her.

Kaelina pushed open the back door and sprinted into the alleyway. The pendant's glow dimmed, but she could still feel its warmth, guiding her feet. She turned corner after corner, her breath coming in short gasps, until she reached the edge of the village.

A dense forest loomed ahead, its trees shrouded in mist. Kaelina hesitated for only a moment before plunging into the shadows.

Behind her, Rowan's voice rang out. "She's heading into the forest! After her!"

Kaelina didn't look back. The pendant pulsed against her chest, and the whispers of an ancient voice filled her mind: "The path is dark, but the light will guide you. Trust it."

The forest loomed ahead, its towering trees creating a thick canopy that swallowed the fading light. Kaelina's breath came in sharp gasps as she plunged into the darkness, her feet barely touching the ground as she ran. The pendant pulsed fiercely against her chest, as though urging her to go faster. The distant sound of soldiers' shouts echoed behind her, but she didn't dare look back.

Her mind raced, her thoughts clouded with fear and confusion. Why me? she wondered. What am I supposed to do with all this power?

The forest seemed alive—whispers of the wind, the rustling of leaves, the creaking of ancient branches. It felt as if the very trees were watching her, waiting.

Suddenly, a low growl echoed from the shadows. Kaelina froze, her heart racing. From between the trees emerged a creature, unlike anything she had ever seen. Its body was sleek and black, with eyes glowing like embers in the darkness. Long, jagged claws scraped against the forest floor, and its teeth gleamed under the moonlight.

Kaelina took a step back, panic rising in her chest. The creature growled again, a deep, menacing sound that sent a chill down her spine. But before it could lunge at her, the pendant around her neck flared with a sudden burst of light, casting the creature into temporary retreat.

Kaelina gasped, her hand clutching the pendant as the creature hissed and backed away into the shadows. It seemed repelled by the light, but Kaelina knew this wouldn't last long. She couldn't run forever.

I need to find answers. I need to understand what this pendant really is.

With no time to waste, she turned and sprinted deeper into the forest. The whispers of the pendant grew louder, guiding her, pulling her toward something—something ancient. She followed the pull, weaving through the dense trees until she reached a clearing.

In the center stood an ancient stone archway, covered in moss and vines. The pendant pulsed with a radiant glow, brighter than before. As Kaelina approached the arch, the ground beneath her feet trembled. The air grew thick with energy, and she could feel the presence of something old, something powerful.

The voice of the pendant spoke to her once more, clearer this time: "Step forward, child of the Eternal Realms. The path you seek lies beyond this gate."

Her heart raced with both fear and anticipation. This was it. She had to step through the gate to learn the truth.

Without another thought, Kaelina stepped forward. The moment she passed through the archway, the world around her seemed to shift. The air grew colder, and the sky above darkened as though a storm was approaching.

Before her stood a vast, sprawling landscape, unlike anything she had ever seen. The sky shimmered with colors Kaelina couldn't name, and the ground beneath her feet seemed to pulse with life.

A figure appeared from the mist—tall, cloaked, with eyes glowing like twin moons. The figure spoke in a voice that resonated deep within Kaelina's soul.

"You have entered the realm of the forgotten, child," it said. "Now, your true journey begins."
