Circinius system, Circinius IV, Corbulo Academy of Military Science
(Third Person POV)
Tom returned to his quarters after another failed combat exercise. His tolerant views on insurrectionists made him unpopular among many cadets, especially those from outer colonies. As he lay down, he reflected on the recent news about his older brother Cadmon, who was missing in action and presumed dead. Tom's mother did not allow him to leave the academy for the funeral.
Chyler, his close friend and squad mate, was the only one who knew and supported him. Just as Tom was about to leave his dorm, a notification sounded from his holographic monitor. He usually reviewed old recordings and messages from his brother, playing chess with him through these recordings. Tom sat at the monitor, scrolled through, and stopped at the recordings section.
Tom received an unexpected video message from his older brother, Cadmon Lasky. Surprised, he opened it to find Cadmon in an ODST uniform on a ship.
"Hey little bro!" Cadmon greeted me with a wave. "I don't know if mom told you, but I'm technically MIA—as they say. I can't share much but know that I'm alive and well."
Tom felt relief and joy, though questions lingered. Cadmon continued, "Sadly, some things mom said are true. My whole squad's KIA. But a new squad saved me, though I got demoted for losing my previous team."
The recording ended, leaving Tom with mixed emotions but gratefully his brother was alive.
Tom listened attentively to the recording, a smile forming on his face as the video progressed. "Hey, but at least I'm still alive to continue fighting," Cadmon said cheerfully and with enthusiasm. "Anyway, I might have to cut this short; my new commanding officer is quite strict, and I would prefer not to upset them, as you can probably tell by the design of my room's interior," Cadmon continued, glancing around his room. "I'm on a ship... that might not be the best way to phrase it... In any case, I'm unsure of our next destination, but I wanted to say, 'Do your work, Cadet,'" Cadmon added jokingly. "I don't know when I'll be able to contact you again, but keep up with your training, and maybe one day you'll get a tattoo like mine—if you join the marines. Goodbye, little brother," the recording concluded.
As the recording ended, Tom let out a small chuckle and smiled, his mood significantly improved. Moments earlier, he had been frustrated because his squad had lost due to his mistakes, but now he felt happier knowing that his older brother, whom he admired and was close to, was still alive.
When Tom left his dormitory, he was approached in the hallway by his two squad mates and friends, Chyler and Sullivan, or Sully. "Someone seems happy today," Chyler teased.
"What's up, Lasky? What brightened your day?" Sully asked.
"It's nothing," Tom replied, brushing it off. "Let's head to the mess hall; it's almost dinner."
Sully shrugged. "Fine by me."
Chyler, still suspicious, whispered, "What are you hiding, Tom?"
"It's nothing," Tom said, pausing. "I'll explain later."

Epsilon Eridani system, Tribute, UNSC Paris-class heavy frigate, Macron
A month had passed since their last mission on Biko. Kilo-2 received medals: Aedan got a Silver Star and a Legion of Honor, despite his protests. Martinez and Elizabeth each earned a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star, Elijah got a Bronze Star, and Cadmon received a Silver Star without knowing why. Their pilot, Lieutenant Wildling, was awarded the Outstanding Airman of the Year Ribbon, which annoyed Martinez.
The Macron stopped at Tribute for shipyard repairs as Reach's facilities were occupied. The rescued Umagena personnel were officially added to the Macron's crew by FLEETCOM, increasing the crew size to nearly 800. As a result, the ship was further outfitted and renovated.
Aedan walked through the halls in his dress uniform. Many marines received purple crosses; Staff Sgt Wilson was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant and awarded a Military Star for his leadership at Biko. Captain Rodriguez earned a Silver Star and a mixed response from Vice Admiral Stanforth for disobeying orders.
Aedan entered his quarters and changed into his PT uniform: a grey T-shirt and black fatigues. It felt good to be out of the armor after so long. He had been trying unsuccessfully to upload music from his iPhone, which he hadn't turned on since arriving in the Halo universe, fearing it would run out of battery.
"Another eventless day," Aedan muttered as he left for the gym to stay in shape. Augmentations prevented him from getting fat, but he wanted to ensure his fitness.
At the gym, he saw Cadmon and Elijah lifting weights. Elijah, though slim, was very strong, easily handling heavy equipment and traveling long distances with it. His affinity for explosives and heavy weapons reminded Aedan of Sam.
Cadmon, on the other hand, was an ordinary individual, but he appeared to be exceptionally observant, calculating, and diplomatic at times. Aedan had always wondered what would have happened if Cadmon had survived in the original timeline.
Cadmon was the first to notice his entrance and stopped what he was doing. "Heading to work out, boss?" Cadmon asked, drawing Elijah's attention as well.
"I may be a super soldier, but even I need to maintain my physical condition," Aedan replied as he approached some weights that weighed 300 kilograms, effortlessly lifting them.
"Sometimes, I wonder why we are teamed up with you. Seriously, boss, you are like a one-person army," Elijah remarked as he set down his weights and wiped sweat from his forehead.
"Even I can be defeated if the enemy is well-coordinated, and besides, I appreciate having people to support me," Aedan responded.
"Well said, Boss, well said," Cadmon commented.
"So, when do you think they will send us to the next challenging mission? Martinez has been getting restless," Elijah inquired.
"It depends on the Captain," Aedan answered.
"I am actually enjoying these few moments of peace. Some time away from the battlefield is always appreciated by me," Cadmon said as he sat down on a nearby bench, grabbed a towel, and wiped his face. "I would not mind if they deployed us after a few months."
The Ship's AI announced, "SPARTAN 001, report to the bridge immediately."
"Nice job jinxing it, gunny," Elijah said sarcastically.
Cadmon replied, "What can I say? It's a hidden talent."
Ignoring them, Aedan left the Gym and headed to the Bridge, anticipating new orders. As he walked through the ship's corridors, Marines and crew members saluted him out of respect, despite his non-officer status.
As Aedan entered the bridge, he stopped in front of the holographic table and saluted Captain Rodriguez, who was standing by the table. "Sir, SPARTAN 001 reporting as ordered," Aedan said while standing at attention. The Captain nodded and motioned for him to stand at ease. "At ease, Chief," the Captain said, then turned towards the table. "Under normal circumstances, I wouldn't have informed you now, but due to changes in orders from Command…"
"Sir?" Aedan asked, unsure of what the Captain meant.
"We're departing immediately for Circinius IV. Intelligence suggests that it could be the next target for the Covenant. Prepare your team, as they will play a significant role in the ground operations," the Captain explained.
"But sir, isn't the Macron still undergoing repairs and upgrades?" Aedan expressed his concerns. He was no naval expert, but he knew that the Macron was not in suitable condition for another naval engagement, particularly against the Covenant.
"I am aware," the Captain replied, "but this mission is more about getting you and your team to the surface of the planet rather than engaging in another futile space battle. We will remain as long as we can, but do not rely on it, Chief. We may have to withdraw, and you will need to find your own way out."
"I understand," Aedan said, though internally he thought, 'Well, that's reassuring.'
"I know you do. Dismissed," the Captain said before turning around and issuing further commands.
Aedan gave another salute before turning and leaving the bridge. 'Oh boy, Cadmon's going to be overwhelmed,' Aedan thought. He knew their destination and what lay ahead. He had found the events of the movie Halo: Forward Unto Dawn to be more authentic and canon-like compared to the poor adaptation of the Halo TV series. He just hoped that Cadmon would not have a panic attack upon learning where they were headed and what they were about to face.

Circinius system, Circinius IV, UNSC Paris-class heavy frigate, Macron
Aedan secured his DMR on his back and positioned the two M6D magnums at his waist. As he turned around, he noted that Elijah had picked up his usual SPNKr along with an M7S. Meanwhile, Elizabeth was meticulously cleaning and checking her SRS99 sniper rifle. Martinez, having already selected his weapons—a MA5B assault rifle and an M6S sidearm (the silencer variant of the M6C)—was casually handling his combat knife. Cadmon, already equipped with a MA2B assault rifle and an M6C, was pacing back and forth continuously after being informed by Aedan about the location and purpose of their upcoming mission.
"Maintain composure, Gunny. Panicking will not be beneficial," Elijah advised, as she slung the SPNKr and picked up his M7S.
"Composure? How can I possibly remain calm knowing my younger brother is amidst the chaos we are about to enter?" Cadmon responded, clearly distressed at the thought of his sibling becoming involved in the conflict or potentially losing his life.
"Listen Cadmon, I understand you have a younger brother down there, but panicking won't help," Aedan said while looking at Cadmon. "You should focus on getting down there to check on him or ensure he makes it out."
Cadmon took a moment to calm down. "Well, you have a point, boss...but still," Cadmon replied. "How long until we get dropped?"
"Right now," Aedan answered as he started heading for the exit. "Let's start worrying after we get down there."
"You heard him, let's go," Martinez said, patting Cadmon's back and following Aedan.
"I'm so stressed," Cadmon said, following Aedan. Elijah and Elizabeth followed silently.
As they entered the SOIEV launch bay, Cadmon was the first one to get into his pod; Aedan went in next, followed by Elizabeth, Martinez and Elijah. As the hatch closed Elizabeth spoke through TEAMCOM, "So what's our objective?"
"We're dropping into or near the surroundings of the Corbulo academy of Military science" Aedan answered through TEAMCOM.
"Heh, we are actually dropping near your brother's location," Elijah said through TEAMCOM.
"That doesn't make it any better," Cadmon replied.
"We'll be fine; we survived Biko," Martinez remarked sarcastically.
"SOIEV drop pods launching in 3…2…1... launch!" the Ship's AI announced through the COMs.
Aedan felt his drop pod leaving the ship and freefalling, he strapped himself in knowing that this drop was going to be way worse than his previous two. "You think the Fleet's doing any better?" Elijah said through COMs.
"Based on our experience on Biko, probably not," Elizabeth replied through COMs.
"How are we going to get out of there? I'm sure that pilot will not come down to save us," Martinez questioned.
"We will find our own way out," Aedan responded.
"Isn't it going to be night down there?" Martinez asked again.
"Yes, so make sure to have your night vision gear ready," Aedan replied.
Cadmon remained silent during the descent. He felt the chute deploy and then detach after a while. He thought to himself, 'Stay safe down there, little brother; you still have much ahead of you.'
Aedan took a deep breath, thinking, 'This is it,' but his pod shook with a shockwave. He realized it could only mean one thing: the destruction of the Space Elevator at Corbulo Academy during an attack on Circinius.
"Everyone strap in, we're going off course!" Aedan said through COMs.
"What do you mean off course?!" Martinez responded.
"I HATE THIS!" Elijah shouted.
The pod hit the ground hard, and Aedan waited for the impact's shock to subside before opening his hatch. They had landed in a forest. Checking his HUD, Aedan saw Cadmon and Elijah were 40 feet north, while Martinez and Elizabeth were 25 feet east.
"Report," Aedan said through TEAMCOM.
"Elijah and I are clear, boss," Cadmon reported via COMs.
"All clear here as well, Chief," Elizabeth confirmed through COMs.
"Regroup at my location," Aedan ordered.
Affirmative responses followed as all members of Kilo-2 regrouped. They proceeded south, where Corbulo Academy was visible in the distance, the space elevator having been destroyed by the Covenant. Three SVD corvettes could be seen on the horizon.
"Oh my God," Cadmon muttered under his breath, his concern growing with each passing moment.
"Maintain vigilance; it is nighttime, making us susceptible to ambushes," Aedan cautioned through COMs.
As soon as he finished, they were hailed by plasma fire that came from in front of them, Aedan immediately ducked behind a nearby rock while Elizabeth crawled down, Martinez took a nearby tree and Elijah and Cadmon took cover besides Aedan.
"Way to go boss, you jinxed us," Elijah said sarcastically.
"Shut up and shoot." Cadmon said as he fired his assault rifle.
"That's the fucking spirit." Martinez said as he opened fire as well.
"Maybe you should aim and then fire instead of wasting ammo." Elizabeth said as she aimed her sniper and fired three shots, taking out a target each.
"Agreed." Aedan said as he aimed his DMR as well and fired off. He could identify the weapons being shot at them as Plasma pistols due to the green plasma flying towards them, 'Jackals' Aedan thought as he saw their green shields shimmer in the distance.
"Hey first one to get the most kills gets all the brownies." Elijah challenged.
"You're on." Martinez enthusiastically agreed.
"Boys…." Elizabeth sighed as continued taking the Covenant troops out, she was the most effective shooter other than Aedan.
"Can we all focus on getting to the academy other than petty challenges… because if we can, I'm more than happy to do both." Cadmon said.
"Let's advance. I will draw their fire while you eliminate them," Aedan commanded as he vaulted over the rock and sprinted forward, discharging his DMR. The plan succeeded; the Jackals redirected their focus to Aedan, who maneuvered towards the left flanks, their shields revealing their positions even in the darkness.
"Let the hunt commence!" Martinez exclaimed, launching forward, followed by Elijah, eager not to be left behind.
"Wait for me!" Cadmon shouted as he caught up with them.
"We are in serious trouble," Elizabeth remarked, rising to join the others.

Location: Circinius system, Circinius IV, near Corbulo academy
[Half an hour ago]
John moved through the forests of Circinius, his olive green Mjolnir armor covered in mud. He had been separated from Blue Team, with Kelly in charge after Sam's vote.
Receiving an academy distress signal, he sprinted towards it at full speed, hoping to arrive in time. Still adjusting to his promotion to Master Chief Petty Officer, he heard Kelly over COMs: "We're closing in near your location, Chief. What's your ETA status, over?"
"Negative, Kelly. Hold off with the second squad until my signal. We might have survivors," John replied.
"Affirmative, Kelly out," Kelly said as she disconnected the communications.
The space battle concluded much sooner than anticipated, with the Covenant ships achieving dominance in space. Their only evacuation option was the Destroyer, UNSC *Mimic*, holding its position on the far side of the planet. It became imperative to reach the survivors and evacuate them swiftly.
John had gained significant insights from OPERATION: SILENT STORM following their successful mission on Zhoist, where they destroyed the supercarrier at the cost of most of the black daggers and Colonel Crowther. He came to understand that there were situations beyond his control, and it was a harsh reality that he could not save everyone. John was not like Aedan, who, according to Dr. Halsey, had successfully evacuated over 70% of civilians at Biko.
Aedan's actions positioned him as more of a hero than John or any other SPARTAN. Unknown to his comrades, even Sam and Kelly, John aspired to be like Aedan—someone capable of saving lives.
John had always been a leader, prioritizing the mission above all else, including his team. Chief Mendez's words about lives being spent versus lives being wasted resonated deeply with him, reinforcing his perspective.
Aedan altered the circumstances significantly. Since the incident at Chi Ceti, where Sam was injured and his suit compromised, John had no choice but to order Sam to stay behind and defend the bomb until it detonated. This decision inevitably sacrificed his best friend and brother.
However, Aedan changed that outcome. Not only did he save Sam, but he also revealed to John an alternative perspective: the concept that lives being expended or wasted could be avoided with the proper resources and timing.
John, despite his capabilities and fortune, struggled to comprehend how Aedan accomplished these feats. It seemed as though Aedan possessed an extraordinary perception, surpassing even Kurt's. The specifics of this ability would remain a mystery for now, as John's immediate priority was to rescue and evacuate the survivors.
As he approached the remains of the academy, the extensive devastation caused by the Covenant filled him with anger. Nonetheless, he maintained his composure, as did everyone else in his team.
John entered the main compound of the academy, even though it had only been a few minutes since the covenant ships went into atmosphere and deployed its troops, the academy was littered with the bodies of cadets and marines alike, the rubble burying a few of the bodies, as some part of the academy burned.
John went into the corridors of the academy; the only thing heard was his heavy footsteps.
As he traversed through the dark hallways, the lights flickering as he walked by, his HUD's motion tracker showing no friendlies nearby, his helmet's flashlights activated. But the sudden sound of something heavy crashing caught his attention and in an instant, he dashed forwards towards the origins of the sound.
His footsteps now silent, as he turned around corners, his fast reaction time allowing him to navigate through the hallways with ease, he stopped by the entrance of a locker room and slightly peeked inside, there he saw one of those tall muscular and slender aliens with their Energy sword activated standing over a group of cadets who were all huddled up in a corner, he had designated this alien as Elite or elites in general.
As the Elite raised his hand back going for a strike, John pulling out his knife dashed forwards in a flash, stabbing the elite in the back of the neck, the elite let of a grunt in pain as he stabbed it in the neck, as the Elite collapsed to the ground, John removed his knife looking down at the elite for a moment before stepping forwards towards the cadets and looking down at them, he could have said a lot of things and he knew it, but as the situation dictates.
"We do not have much time; let us proceed," John instructed, observing the four cadets who were huddled in a corner, appearing both scared and astonished.
(Present time)
Aedan and Kilo-2 walked through the forest, nearing the academy's compound, they had cleared the small patrol or force that they had encountered with relative ease as Aedan acting as bait worked phenomenally.
"How did you get most of the kills?" Aedan heard Martinez say behind him.
"I have skills; I was top of the class when I was at Corbulo Academy," Cadmon replied.
"It seems unfair. I would say you're a natural prodigy," Elijah added.
"Next time, let's not charge forward recklessly, shall we?" Elizabeth suggested.
Aedan chuckled softly; they certainly knew how to transform a serious situation into one of lighthearted banter. As they approached the breach in the fence leading to the compound, they paused beside a Drop pod that indicated the presence of life inside. The hatch was also sealed.
"It appears someone's pod malfunctioned," Martinez observed while inspecting the pod.
"Liz, maintain vigilance and provide cover," Aedan commanded. "Cadmon, please step aside."
Cadmon complied and moved away from the hatch. Utilizing his considerable strength, Aedan punched into the pod, grasping the hatch from the inside, and forcibly removed it. Inside, an ODST remained strapped to his seat, likely unconscious.
"It seems you might have rendered him unconscious," Elijah remarked.
"Wake up! This is not the time for rest. WAKE UP!" Martinez shouted as he approached the trooper, tapping the side of his helmet.
The ODST jerked awake, unbuckling himself. "What happened?" he asked.
"You got lucky," Cadmon replied sarcastically.
Looking around, the ODST's gaze fell on Aedan's golden visor. "What the... I can't speak today," he stammered.
"That happens," Martinez said.
"Rank and file, Marine?" Aedan asked.
The ODST straightened up. "Staff Sergeant Arthur Sebastian, 11th Shock Trooper Battalion."
"The rest of your squad, Sergeant?" Aedan inquired.
"I think it's likely KIA," Arthur said, surveying the ruins of Corbulo Academy.
"First time? You'll get used to it. I got my first squad wiped a few months ago," Cadmon replied, helping him out of the Pod.
"What are you?" Arthur asked, amazed at Aedan's height and armor.
"Classified," Aedan said, drawing his DMR. "Sergeant, you're now part of my team. We need all the help we can get."
"Yes, sir!" Arthur said, retrieving his DMR from his pod.
"Cadmon, stay with him. Elijah, you're with me. Martinez and Liz, take the roof and keep us covered," Aedan instructed.
"Aye Aye, boss," Martinez and Elizabeth responded respectively before proceeding towards the roof.
Aedan turned to the remaining team members, "The four of us will proceed on foot," he stated as he began walking.
"How delightful," Elijah remarked sarcastically, while Cadmon and Arthur followed behind.
"So, you are…" Arthur began to ask as they trailed Aedan, but Cadmon interrupted.
"Gunnery Sergeant Cadmon Lasky, formerly of the 10th Battalion, now part of Kilo-2. The one with the jackhammer is Elijah, the sniper was Elizabeth, and the enthusiastic one was Martinez," Cadmon introduced each team member as they walked. "And our leader, who will introduce himself later, holds the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer."
"Wow... that's quite an impressive team," Arthur remarked, somewhat awestruck by the assembly of Hell Jumpers led by a seven-foot-tall, blue-armored figure. "How long have you been doing this?"
"As part of the Marine Corps, about a year and a half; as an ODST, roughly a year; and as a member of this team, around three or four months," Cadmon explained.
"So your squad got killed, right?" Arthur asked.
"Yeah, on Andesia. Damn innies surprised us. I'd be dead if the boss and his team hadn't saved me," Cadmon replied.
Arthur chuckled, "That's luck for us Hell Jumpers. By the way, thanks for saving me. I'd have suffocated without you guys."
"Anytime, but you should thank him yourself," Cadmon said.
Aedan, who was ahead with Elijah, listened in on their conversation due to his keen hearing. 'I always wonder how Cadmon talks so well,' he thought as they walked down the stairs and onto the roadway.
"Damn, so this is what it's like to walk in a prestigious academy, I would say, it's kinda lame." Elijah sarcastically said.
"It's because it's destroyed, damaged, ruined." Cadmon bluntly replied.
"These damn aliens really do know how to destroy places." Arthur commented.
Aedan and the other three walked by the road, as they came out into an exit, they found the inner compound littered with corpses, rubble and flames in some places.
"This used to be where I trained hand to hand combat…" Cadmon said as he looked at the ruined compound, his voice filled with nostalgia and sadness.
"Welcome home I guess… you think your lil bro made it?" Elijah asked.
"He must have, I know Tom isn't a fool to stay in places like this for too long." Cadmon replied, Aedan knew what it felt like to worry about a younger sibling.
"I'm sure your little brother will be fine." Arthur said as he comforted Cadmon by patting on the back.
As Aedan looked around, he noticed a few jackal bodies. Upon further inspection, he saw some tracks on the road.
"That's a warthog and in good condition," Elijah noted as he observed the Warthog parked nearby.
"I haven't driven one in a long time," Cadmon said, with Arthur nodding in agreement.
The warthog was empty and remained undamaged, which puzzled Aedan. It reminded him of the ones in Halo: CE that were notably resilient.
He was interrupted from his thoughts as his COMs activated. "Chief, we have movement," he heard Elizabeth's voice.
As Elizabeth and Martinez left the main group and tried to find a way to the roof, they came across two Jackals, who were trudging their way across a corner, Elizabeth took out her combat knife putting her sniper on the back, she motioned Martinez to follow suit.
Martinez followed suit taking out his combat knife, as the two ODST's sneaked towards the two birdlike creatures, both of them simultaneously gagged their mouths or beaks shut with their hands, sliding their throat and smearing their knives with their purple blood.
"Yuck, I'm never going to touch these dinosaur looking things again." Martinez said as he cleaned his knife against his armor plate.
"Just deal with it." Elizabeth said as she drew out her sniper rifle and placed her knife back. "Help me up will you." she said as he got near a wall which led up to the roof.
"How are we going to climb that?" Martinez asked, eyeing the 4-meter-high wall.
"Boost me up," Elizabeth replied, as Martinez got his hands ready.
"Alright, go ahead, Lizzy," he said. Elizabeth sprinted, stepped on his hands, and with his help, launched herself up. She hooked her SRS99 over the edge, braced against the wall, and climbed up slowly.
"So how do I get up?" Martinez asked, just as a rope dropped onto his faceplate. "And where did you get that rope?"
"Please get up," Elizabeth instructed as she secured the rope to a nearby rod. Martinez grasped the rope firmly and began climbing, using the wall for support. Upon reaching the top, Elizabeth assisted him by grabbing his arm and helping him up. "Alright, let's set up camp," he remarked while dusting off his hands and clothes.
Elizabeth nodded in agreement and proceeded to the other side of the rooftop. Their location was the highest point on the academy grounds, as the taller structures had either been demolished or reduced to rubble. She positioned her sniper rifle on the edge and began scanning the area. Martinez crouched beside her.
"You know, Elizabeth, I often reflect on how well we, along with Elijah, have formed such a strong friendship," Martinez said thoughtfully. "Even though our parents were good friends, it still amazes me how we managed to get along so well."
"You could consider it fate or perhaps our destiny to be together. Regardless, we are united and nothing will alter that," Elizabeth reassured while scanning the surroundings through the scope.
"It appears someone is becoming more sentimental," Martinez teased.
"Shut your mouth up before I make you eat a bullet." Elizabeth replied.
"Ah, there's the Lizzy we know and love" Martinez jokingly said.
Although Elizabeth was annoyed, she maintained a slight smile beneath her helmet. Despite Martinez's persistent annoyance, she recognized his presence as necessary and appreciated his company. Elizabeth's parents, both veterans who rarely spoke of their experiences, had served alongside Martinez's father and Elijah's mother in the same unit.
Her thoughts were abruptly interrupted when she detected movement. She adjusted her sniper scope to investigate and observed a warthog vehicle driving on the road leading to one of the Academy's exits.
As she zoomed in further, she identified four individuals: humans occupying the front seats and a tall, green-armored individual positioned at the turret. This individual appeared to be nearly, if not exactly, the same height as the Chief.
Martinez looked up from his cover and observed the warthog in the distance. "Is that a warthog?" he inquired.
"Yes, it appears to have survivors...and another individual," Elizabeth replied.
"Wait, what do you mean by 'another individual'?" Martinez asked, looking at her with a puzzled expression.
Elizabeth ignored his question and activated her TEAMCOMS. "Chief, we have detected movement," she reported.
"Status." Aedan responded through TEAMCOM.
"They're human, possible survivors…and someone else." Elizabeth said.
"Explain." Aedan inquired.
"A 7-foot-tall individual in olive green armor." Elizabeth answered.
There was a pause on the COMs before, "Affirmative. Rendezvous at my position, we'll be giving chase." Aedan instructed as the COMs went off.
"So?" Martinez asked.
"We regroup with the chief." Elizabeth said as she started walking off.
"Ah well, there goes our short camping trip." Martinez said before catching up to Elizabeth.
Aedan waited next to the Warthog. Elijah was already in the driver's seat starting it up while Cadmon and Arthur maintained a perimeter. Aedan knew that the only other way off world would be to follow John and the survivors he was escorting. He had received a transmission from the Macron about their departure a few minutes earlier.
A few minutes later, Martinez and Elizabeth jogged towards them. "Took you two long enough, I was wondering if you got lost," Elijah remarked.
"No, we just took our time sightseeing," Martinez replied.
"Alright, both of you get onboard, we're going on a car chase," Aedan said as he climbed onto the turret.
"How are we supposed to fit in here? Having three sit at the front is one thing but five?" Martinez exclaimed, as Cadmon took the seat next to Elijah and Arthur sat next to Cadmon, leaving a small spot for Elizabeth on the side.
"You can sit on someone's lap, Martinez," Elijah suggested.
"I'd rather not," Martinez responded.
"Get in, Martinez; we don't have all day," Aedan ordered. Reluctantly, Martinez sat between Elizabeth and Arthur. Elijah started driving the car at 80 km/hr, leaving the academy and heading north on the same road as the first vehicle.
"This is really cramped," Arthur stated.
"No kidding," Martinez replied. "And please move your hands; this is uncomfortable."
"I don't think we have any people out here other than us, those guys that ran off in the first hog and those aliens" Cadmon said.
"Speaking of aliens, can you keep your eyes out, wouldn't want to be jumped by them on a dark forest" Elijah said as he drove the Warthog, skillfully turning and handling it.
"And please for the love of god, don't fart" Elizabeth said, which earned a chuckle from everyone, even Aedan who was scanning the area, aiming the turret around as they drove by at high speed, his HUD's motion tracker showing no hostiles as of now
As the Warthog continued onwards Aedan couldn't help but notice the bullet cartridges on the road, 'Damn…I feel like I'm in a movie…wait of course I'm in a movie' Aedan thought forgetting the fact that he was still not from this universe.
"We got contact up ahead" Elijah said and Aedan aimed the turret to see a warthog left abandoned in the middle of the road.
"I think we found our speeder. Are we giving a ticket?" Martinez asked as he exited the passenger seat, followed by Elizabeth, Arthur, and Cadmon, who stretched his back. Aedan scanned for threats with the turret.
"Looks like they ditched it," Cadmon said, observing the smoking hog.
"Any signs of hostiles?" Aedan asked.
"Negative, all clear," Elizabeth replied.
"So, what now? Do we drive on?" Elijah asked, stepping out.
"Look, footprints." Arthur said pointing to a few trails which led to the side.
Aedan dismounted from the turret and walked towards Arthur, observing the footprints that led into the woods. "That's where we're heading then," Aedan stated as he drew his DMR and moved in.
"Alright, it looks like we have a detective here now," Martinez commented as he patted Arthur's back and followed Aedan. Elizabeth and Elijah followed next, with Cadmon urging Arthur to come along.
"Come on, let's go. You're one of us now," Cadmon said. Arthur stood there silently for a moment before quickly joining them as he realized he was alone in the jungle at night.
As they jogged through the forest, distant noises of jackals could be heard. Aedan was the first to reach what appeared to be a concrete cover, followed by Elijah and Martinez who took point. Elizabeth covered the rear as Cadmon and Arthur made it in next.
"It seems unusual to find a concrete cover in the middle of the woods," Elijah remarked while aiming his M7s SMG.
"I thought having random walls in the middle of a forest was common," Martinez replied.
"Do you always joke around?" Arthur asked.
"Yes," Cadmon, Elijah, and Martinez replied in unison.
Arthur stopped mid-sentence as he turned to see a body on the ground—a woman in a combat outfit. "BODY BODY!" he shouted, stepping back.
Aedan turned first, aimed his DMR at the body, then recognized Chyler Silva from the movie. He lowered his weapon, rushed over, checked her pulse—she was dead.
'Damn it, Aedan, how could you forget this?' he thought, berating himself.
"Wait, I know her," Cadmon said, moving forward.
"You do?" Elijah asked.
"That is one of my younger brother's squad members, his best friend," Cadmon said with a tone of recognition and sorrow. "If she is here then"
"Your younger brother might be alive, or at least I hope so," Martinez replied.
"I'm detecting movements up ahead," Elizabeth informed as she readied her sniper rifle.
Aedan stood up and prepared his DMR. "Let's approach them then," he said as he prepared to move forward. "Spread out."
"How is it already becoming morning?" Martinez asked as he looked at the sky, which was lighting up, with the night sky they had entered completely disappearing.
"Different planets have different day cycles," Cadmon answered.
"It's time to engage the aliens again," Elijah said as he took out his SPNKr. "Alright."
As John and the four cadets hid beneath the small ridge, the hunter was challenging them. With only a grenade to use, John opened his COMs, "Kelly…negative need more time, cannot make it to the rendezvous," he communicated with Kelly. Tom looked at the grenade in his hand, understanding he might have to use it for their escape.
"You have to hold the Pelican…. I won't leave them! Chief out," John informed. He then addressed the three remaining survivors, "I'll engage, get to the pelican as fast as you can." Tom held onto Chyler's dog tag, running his fingers along it.
Before John could move out, Tom stopped him. "No sir, I'll be the decoy," Tom stated, causing John to turn toward him.
"Lasky, no," April Orenski, the team leader of Hastati squad, expressed concern.
"You sweep in from behind," Tom suggested, looking at John.
"Cadet," John said, his voice neutral. He was concerned about the young cadet, though neither he nor any of the SPARTANs were much older. Tom placed the dog tags inside his vest, ignoring Orenski's pleas. "AXIOS!" he shouted before running. As Tom moved through the woods, a 10-foot-tall creature on the ridge aimed its fuel rod cannon at him. The shot missed by inches, but the shockwave caused him to stumble.
As he got up, he saw the Hunter on the ridge, preparing for another shot. Tom quickly recovered and continued running. The Hunter stopped charging its cannon and jumped down, turning its back to John and the others. Seizing the opportunity, John activated a grenade and charged at the Hunter but was knocked back by its large shield.
Tom looked back to see the Hunter targeting him again with its cannon. He kept running. John got up, filled with adrenaline, and dashed towards the Hunter, climbing onto its shield. This caused the Hunter to misfire. John maneuvered over the creature, positioning himself behind it, and planted the grenade into its exposed back.
As John leaped away from the hunter, the fuel rode shot it had miss fired and landed a few inches away from Tom, sending him flying. The Hunter feeling something inside it stopped for a moment before it exploded a part due to the grenade, blood spewing out, and John covering his face plate with his arm, his armor smeared a bit with the Hunter's orange blood, as John looks down he noticed the worm which made these beasts, and stepped on it, killing it. John went over to the remains of the hunter and picked up a small shard of its shield.
Orenski and Sully got up from their cover and rushed towards Tom, checking if he's ok and alive. John activated COMs, "Bring it down Kelly" he said, and John noticed that morning had come. As John went over to Tom who laid on the ground, coughing as he opened his eyes, John could hear the Pelican flying above them and landing nearby.
But before they could leave, John heard and noticed some ruffling in the bushes nearby as all of them turn to look at it, some jackals come out, one of them already spotting them and raising its shield, aiming its plasma pistol which John knew was going to be aimed at him.
"Get down!" John ordered, ducking quickly. Orenski, Sully, and Tom followed suit, bracing for the incoming plasma fire. To their surprise, an explosion erupted where the Jackals were positioned, filling the air with dust. Through the smoke, they heard gunfire and the cries of wounded Jackals.
As the dust settled, heavy footsteps approached. John looked up to see Aedan, a SPARTAN in all black armor with a skull engraved onto a red visor.
Aedan raised his DMR and glanced at John. "Need a hand or a leg?" he asked.
"A hand would be handy," John replied.
Aedan chuckled, helping John up. Tom and the others stared at him in awe, partly due to his unique armor. Their reunion was interrupted by Elijah's comment from the back.
"That was the most badass thing you could have said, boss," Elijah praised.
John saw five ODSTs where the Jackals had been. One held a Jackhammer, another knelt by a Jackal removing a tooth, a sniper stood guard, one kicked a dead Jackal, and the last approached the cadets.
Cadmon approached Tom, polarizing his helmet to reveal his face. Tom, shocked, looked up at him.
"Hey, little bro, glad you made it out of this mess," Cadmon said, patting Tom on the shoulder.
"W-what are you doing here?" Tom asked, confused.
"I've got a job to do," Cadmon replied. "Talk to you later." He then walked back towards Kilo-2.
Aedan stood next to John, who remembered that Kelly had landed the pelican nearby. He motioned the cadets along, giving Aedan a look before leaving.
"Go ahead, John. We'll catch up. Save us a seat," Aedan said, handing his DMR to Cadmon and kneeling to examine something. John nodded and continued on.
As John and the cadets reached the open ground, they found the pelican. John informed Kelly, "We've got three survivors."
"I've alerted command" Kelly responded.
"Let's go," said Fred, standing beside Kelly.
As John approached the Pelican hatch, he saw Sam waiting. "Took you long enough," Sam said sarcastically.
John, keeping his professionalism, boarded the Pelican and sat near the hatch. Kelly sat next to him, followed by Fred and Sam. Opposite them, three cadets sat. "Wait, we've got more," John said, confusing Sam.
Kelly looked at John curiously, he had said there were only three survivors, so who were they waiting for, she thought. As she looked out the hatch she saw an ODST jog towards the pelican stopping by the hatch, the ODST held a DMR in hand. Then four more ODSTs came by as they entered the pelican one by one, there of them took the seat opposite of them with the cadets, squeezing by the sides, while one simply stood, the last ODST however waited outside.
"ODSTs" Kelly heard Sam murmur under his breath, Sam had developed a mutual respect for the ODSTs after SILENT STORM but still didn't trust them much, as the black daggers had constantly looked down on them.
As Kelly looked outside wondering who else they were waiting for, she was greeting by someone she would instantly recognize, the familiar all black armor and the bowl shaped red visor, which now sported a skull carved into it, even with all the changes to the armor it was more than enough for conformation...she was stunned...but also happy, as a smile formed behind her faceplate.
As Aedan neared the hatch, he patted Cadmon to get in as well, as they finally got in the Pelican lifted and started leaving. Aedan, Cadmon and Arthur stood on the Pelican; Aedan could feel the stares from Kelly, Fred and Sam, especially Sam and Kelly. 'I'm gonna have a lot of explaining to do after this' Aedan thought.
"Why not take a seat Arthur?" Cadmon asked
"Well, uh, there aren't any" Arthur replied.
"There is a seat right there," Elijah said pointing to the empty seat besides Sam.
Arthur just gave a nervous look at Aedan before taking the seat beside Sam, Arthur was feeling really uncomfortable sitting beside someone who looked bigger than even Aedan. Meanwhile Cadmon was strapping and padding Tom on the shoulders.
Aedan briefly nodded at Kelly, who did not respond and continued to look at him. 'This is not a good sign,' he thought.
As Aedan and Cadmon stood by the hatch, they observed the covenant ships in the distance as they glassed the planet. Cadmon clenched his fists tightly. Elijah and Martinez remained silent in respect for those who had perished, while Arthur also observed the scene. Elizabeth was occupied with cleaning her sniper rifle.
The cadets, particularly Sully and Orenski, regarded their mysterious rescuers. Kelly was the first to remove her helmet, revealing pale skin and striking blue eyes. She appeared very young to the cadets. Fred followed, showing his pale face and similar blue eyes, and then Sam, who revealed his blond hair, pale skin, and blue eyes. They all turned their heads simultaneously to look at John, who did not remove his helmet.
All three then turned back to face the cadets. "How old are all of you?" Sully asked. Kelly and Fred exchanged a brief glance before Kelly responded, "That's classified."
Arthur, who was beside Sam, felt even more uncomfortable knowing that the person besides him was not only young, but also someone intimidating with their height and armor. Elijah and Martinez glanced at the three SPARTANs without their helmets, before turning their gaze to Aedan.
Aedan, who noticed this, turned around and looked at them, "What?" Aedan asked.
"Aw come on boss don't what us, you know what we're asking." Martinez replied.
"He's asking you to remove your helmet as well," Elijah explained. At that moment all eyes were on Aedan, who stood silent.
"No" Aedan calmly replied before turning around again.
"Guess I tried" Martinez said, disappointed...
The casualness between Aedan and the ODSTs was noted by the other SPARTANs. If not for the presence of non-SPARTANs, Sam would have had a hearty reunion with Aedan.
As Aedan stood by the hatch, he saw John hand something to Tom but ignored it. Standing next to Cadmon, who still held his DMR, Aedan received it back with a nod.
"Thanks," Aedan said.
"Anytime," Cadmon replied as the hatch closed and the Pelican left the atmosphere. Circinus was already being glassed by the Covenant. 'Another planet lost to this war,' Aedan thought.
Aedan silently nodded in agreement, "There will be more places to fight for." he reassured.
"But will the outcome be the same? Will we retreat as they destroy our worlds?" Cadmon inquired. Aedan lacked a response to that. The burden of foreseeing future events only made Cadmon's words more disheartening.
"Let us hope not," Aedan replied.
Within the Pelican, a heavy silence prevailed; the three cadets were deeply shaken by recent events. Elijah appeared to be comforting Sully, while Martinez fidgeted with his fingers and Elizabeth meticulously cleaned her sniper. Arthur remained completely still, seemingly intimidated by Sam. Kelly and Fred were also silent, with Kelly occasionally glancing at Aedan, and John sat quietly in his seat. The atmosphere was grim, punctuated only by the sound of the Pelican's engines.
April 27, 2526, 0234 hours
Location: Circinius system, Circinius IV, UNSC Halberd-class destroyer, Mimic
As the pelican landed inside the primary hangar of the destroyer and opened the hatch, the three cadets were escorted away by some marines. Tom gave one final look at Cadmon, who responded with a thumbs up. Aedan instructed Kilo-2 and Arthur to meet inside the destroyer's armory.
As Kilo-2 departed from the hangar bay, Aedan stood on the deck with Blue team directly in front of him. Both parties exchanged an awkward glance for a moment. Suddenly, Sam embraced Aedan warmly, exclaiming, "Aedan! It has been too long!" Sam lifted Aedan off the ground as he continued his enthusiastic hug.
Aedan chuckled and said, "Could you please put me down? You might damage my armor." Sam complied promptly.
As Aedan stood up, Fred approached and lightly smacked his shoulders. "So, how's it been, Aedan? We've heard you're a hero now," Fred teased.
"Probably just rumors," Aedan replied. "Where's Linda? I didn't see her on the Pelican."
"Command temporarily reassigned her," John responded practically.
"I see... I'm sure you all had your fair share of fun," Aedan said.
"Definitely not as much as you and your ODST team," Sam commented.
"I'm surprised you get along with them so well, given your history," Fred added.
"They're an interesting bunch," John agreed.
Aedan chuckled, "Yeah well, they get the job done." Kelly, who had been silent, approached him and kneed him in the gut. Aedan barely flinched. "What was that for, Kelly?"
Sam burst out laughing, joined by John and Fred. Kelly, glaring at Aedan, said, "For not giving us any messages or transmissions."
"Are you really that mad?" Aedan asked, rubbing his stomach.
"Oh, she was freaking out since Biko," Sam added, still laughing, until Kelly's glare silenced him.
"I'm still alive, no worries," Aedan reassured lightly.
"Yeah right until you have a needler in your face" Kelly replied, although there was clear amusement in her voice, "It's good to see you Aedan"
"Now that's how you greet people" Aedan sarcastically said, "Good to see you as well Kelly"
"So when are you coming back to blue team? Any idea" Sam asked.
"I don't know it's up to command" Aedan answered.
"Sam was getting a bit lonely without you" Fred said teasingly.
"Of course I was, how am I supposed to survive without someone to joke around with, Kelly smacks me in the face if I tease her." Sam said.
"That's because you take it too far," Kelly replied.
"Linda's out for obvious reasons, John's the leader, so he's a no-go, and Fred avoids my jokes," Sam explained.
"For good reasons," Fred replied, "You make jokes."
Sam placed his hand on his chest, pretending to be hurt.
"Drama queen," Kelly replied.
As the three continued their conversation, John turned to Aedan and asked, "So, how's it for you?"
"It's much tougher if you ask me. Four days on Biko's surface on EVAC duty was enough to give anyone a lifetime's worth of experience," Aedan answered. Up until now, Biko had been the most challenging battle he had been a part of, and the closest he got to not making it out.
"I wonder… do you believe we will prevail in this war?" John inquired, catching Aedan off guard, who had never witnessed this side of John before.
"It is difficult to say… but if we give it our utmost effort, there is a chance we might succeed," Aedan reassured. Despite his desire to tell John what the future would hold, what he and all the SPARTANs would eventually accomplish, he knew it was not an option. Sharing such information could lead to severe consequences. "In any case, I need to rejoin my team now; I still have to dismiss them."
John acknowledged with a nod as Aedan turned and exited the hangar bay. As Aedan walked through the corridors of the destroyer, he could not help but admire the distinctions between the Macron and the Mimic. Although he had previously been aboard a similar vessel, the Pioneer, it was refreshing to be on a new ship after spending months on a frigate.
As Aedan entered the armory of the destroyer, he observed Martinez meticulously examining the various gun racks with great interest. Elizabeth was diligently cleaning her sniper rifle as usual, while Elijah and Cadmon engaged in conversation with Arthur.
Cadmon, always quick to notice his surroundings, called out, "Attention on deck!"
"Interesting phrase, Cadmon," Aedan remarked, finding the expression amusing.
"Thank you, perhaps I should consider a career in poetry after this," Cadmon responded with a hint of humor.
"You should write a poem about Elijah and the origins of his name; it's quite an intriguing story," Martinez suggested.
"Please refrain from doing that," Elijah interjected sharply.
"Anyway, I'm sure you've gotten to know all of them," Aedan said as he approached Arthur.
"Yes, sir," Arthur replied.
"He's even a tech freak," Martinez added.
"It's hacker, not tech freak," Arthur corrected.
Aedan thought, 'I feel like I've assembled the Avengers of the UNSC.' He then introduced himself, "Master Chief Petty Officer Aedan 001," extending his hand for a handshake.
"Pleasure to finally meet you, sir. Thanks for saving me down there; I'd still be in that pod if not for you," Arthur said while shaking hands with Aedan.
Aedan the gripped his hand, to which Arthur jerked up a bit as he looked up at Aedan, "Sir?" he asked
"Normally, I would have asked for command's permission first, but since we're not on home territory anymore," Aedan said before pausing.
"Oh my God, he's going to say it," Elijah said from the back.
"Come on boss, initiate our new tech specialist," Martinez urged, further confusing Arthur.
Cadmon and Elizabeth also waited in anticipation. "Welcome to Kilo-Two Marine. We're going to make an excellent team," Aedan said.
Elijah and Martinez both expressed their approval, while Cadmon patted Arthur on the back, saying, "Welcome to the team, Arthur."
Arthur, taken aback but forewarned by others, gave a nervous chuckle. "I guess I am welcomed," he said.
Aedan had released his grip on Arthur. "Now, another thing," he said, gaining everyone's attention.
"What is it?" Cadmon asked.
Aedan sighed. "It won't be long until I will have to leave you all, and you'll have to continue without me," Aedan said.
"Surely, the time hasn't come yet? We can accommodate one more person," Martinez stated.
"Wait, what are you saying?" Cadmon asked, looking puzzled.
"Well Cadmon, you're officially the new CO of Kilo-two. You can choose your XO now," Aedan said.
"Are you serious?" Cadmon asked in disbelief.
"Yes, that was the plan when he took over Kilo-two," Elizabeth confirmed.
"This is unfair. How can we operate without our boss?" Elijah protested.
"Relax, I'm not leaving right away. I may stay until the end of 2526," Aedan assured.
"In that case, let's make lots of memories on the battlefield!" Martinez exclaimed.
"Should we grab a camera?" Arthur joked, having just joined the team and already fitting in quickly.
"Please do that, we need as many pictures as possible for an album after the war," Elijah agreed.
"I'll be off to catch up with my friends," Aedan said, leaving.
"Oh yeah, I forgot more of the boss's people are onboard," Martinez said.
"I need to see my brother too. It's been a while," Cadmon added, heading for the exit.
"So... Tech man," Martinez started.
"Just call me Hacker man," Arthur corrected.
"Right. Want to play poker?" Martinez asked.
"I shall join as well," Elijah stated, placing an empty crate to serve as a table.
"It seems I will participate as well," Elizabeth remarked, seating herself on one of the crates.
"Four players? Very well, I am fully committed," Arthur declared as he took his seat.
"I am wagering on brownies," Martinez announced.
"We still owe Cadmon his brownies," Elijah reminded them.
"Quiet," Martinez admonished him.
As Aedan walked through the corridors, the crew members of the destroyer regarded him with curious stares, quite different from those he had encountered aboard the Macron. Reflecting on this, Aedan realized how fortunate he was to have been stationed on a ship like the Macron.
Continuing his walk, he noticed a familiar female SPARTAN leaning against the wall as if waiting for someone. "What brings you here, Kelly?" Aedan inquired as he approached her.
"Waiting for you, of course," Kelly replied. Although her face was obscured by her visor, Aedan could sense a smirk behind it.
"Are you here to catch up on my side of the conflict?" Aedan asked.
"Partly, yes, but first," Kelly said, grabbing his arm and leading him away, "let's go to the gym; I haven't had a proper spar in a long time."
Aedan chuckled, "I hope you haven't gotten rusty," he remarked.
"We'll see who the rusty one is," Kelly replied.
"It's on then," Aedan agreed.
"I've missed you," Kelly murmured softly.
