Chapter 20 - Chapter 19: The Nacrene Botanical Competition

Mira woke before dawn, her nerves and excitement blending into an almost tangible energy. The soft hum of the Pokémon Center's early morning activities grounded her as she prepared for the day ahead. She chose a simple yet elegant outfit in shades of green and cream, inspired by the vibrant foliage of Route 3, to complement her presentation theme. To complete the look, she styled her hair into a loose braid adorned with small flower clips, adding a natural touch that reflected her theme of harmony with nature.

"Alright, team," Mira said, turning to her Pokémon. "Today's the big day. Let's give it everything we've got."

Scout barked enthusiastically, his tail wagging furiously as if ready to tackle any challenge that came their way. Snivy nodded with regal confidence, her posture calm and composed, exuding a quiet assurance that they were prepared for success. Petilil chirped softly, her leaves glowing faintly with energy, a gentle but determined signal of her readiness to support Mira. Mira smiled, feeling reassured by their unique personalities and unwavering support.

The competition hall, one of Nacrene's old warehouses, buzzed with activity as participants set up their displays. The large windows cast streams of natural light onto the wooden floors, creating an inviting and energizing atmosphere.

Mira found her designated space and carefully arranged her materials. Her display included sketches, notes, and samples of plants she had collected on Route 3, as well as a story about how she had recently revisited the area to replant some seeds with Petilil's and Snivy's help. While she couldn't carry plants on her journey, this act symbolized her dedication to nurturing nature wherever she could. Her Pokémon watched her setting up attentively.

Taking a moment to observe, Mira admired the creativity of her fellow participants. One trainer had a miniature vertical garden showcasing urban gardening techniques, while another displayed intricate diorama of Pokémon interacting with ecosystems. The sheer variety of ideas filled Mira with awe and inspiration.

A voice over the intercom called for attention as the host, a lively man with a booming voice, stepped onto the stage. "Welcome to the Nacrene Botanical Competition!" he exclaimed, earning a round of applause. "Today, we celebrate the beauty of nature and the creativity of its caretakers. Each participant will have ten minutes to present their research, creativity, and practical applications. Let's make it a day to remember!"

He introduced the panel of judges, which included the esteemed professor assistant Mira had noticed earlier. Their sharp eyes and calm demeanor hinted at their expertise, adding an air of gravitas to the event.

Mira's slot was scheduled midway through the day. As she waited, she watched the early presentations, gaining a deeper appreciation for the diversity of approaches and techniques on display.

When it was her turn, Mira took a deep breath and stepped onto the stage. Her heart pounded, but the sight of her Pokémon waiting confidently by her side steadied her.

"Good afternoon, everyone," she began, her voice clear and calm. "My presentation is titled 'Connecting Pokémon and Nature.' It explores the symbiosis between Grass-type Pokémon and their environments, focusing on the flora of Route 3."

She walked the audience through her sketches and notes, highlighting the unique soil and sunlight preferences of wildflowers she had documented. "These findings aren't just theoretical," she continued, "but practical insights for sustainable gardening."

To demonstrate, Petilil used Sunny Day to create a warm glow, enhancing the vibrancy of the plants on display. Snivy followed with Grassy Terrain, showing how Pokémon could directly support plant growth. Scout, though not a Grass-type, contributed with playful energy, drawing laughter from the audience as he "helped" rearrange a potted plant.

Mira ended with a heartfelt conclusion. "Through my research and experiences, I've learned that Pokémon and nature aren't separate but deeply intertwined. Together, we can create something truly beautiful."

The audience broke into applause, with some murmurs of approval and others nodding in admiration. Mira caught glimpses of impressed expressions, and a few participants exchanged whispers about her creative approach. Her cheeks flushed with pride as she stepped off the stage, feeling the warm reception energize her further.

The judges conferred briefly before addressing Mira. The professor assistant leaned forward, their tone thoughtful. "Your presentation was compelling. I'm particularly intrigued by your practical applications for gardening. Could you expand on how you might adapt these techniques to urban settings?"

Mira nodded, explaining how vertical gardening and rooftop gardens could benefit from Pokémon-assisted growth. She elaborated that Grass-type Pokémon like Petilil and Snivy could use moves such as Sunny Day and Grassy Terrain to create ideal growing conditions even in limited spaces. Sunny Day could help rooftop plants thrive by simulating optimal sunlight, while Grassy Terrain could enrich the soil on vertical installations, ensuring sustainable nutrient cycles. Mira also pointed out that Water-type Pokémon, or those capable of using moves like Rain Dance, could provide essential hydration in urban environments. Although she hadn't tested it herself, she speculated that moves like Life Dew might also have the potential to significantly enhance plant health and growth, given their rejuvenating properties. Mira lastly suggested that incorporating Pokémon into urban gardening could foster stronger community connections, with local trainers working together to maintain these spaces. Her confidence grew as she spoke, and she noted the approving expressions of the panel.

After all participants had presented, the host returned to the stage. "Thank you all for an incredible day! The judges have made their decision."

The third and second-place winners were announced, each receiving warm applause. Then, the host grinned. "And the first-place winner is... Mira Rosemary, for her presentation on 'Connecting Pokémon and Nature'!"

Mira's breath caught as her name echoed through the hall, her mind racing to process the announcement. A wave of emotion surged through her—pride, relief, and an overwhelming sense of gratitude. She stepped forward, her legs feeling light yet steady, to receive her certificate. Her hands trembled slightly as she accepted it, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. Her Pokémon cheered alongside the crowd, their pride evident, and she could hear Scout's excited barks, Petilil's joyful chirps, and Snivy's elegant yet enthusiastic clap.

That evening, Mira and her team gathered in a quiet spot near the Pokémon Center. She posted an update on PokéChirp:

"Overwhelmed and grateful to share that we won first place at the Nacrene Botanical Competition! Huge thanks to my incredible team and everyone who supported me. This is just the beginning of our journey. #BotanicalCompetition #GrassPokemonLove"

Mira looked at her Pokémon, her heart swelling with pride. "This win isn't just mine. It's ours. Thank you for believing in me."

Scout nuzzled her side, Petilil chirped happily, and Snivy offered a regal nod. Before heading to bed, Mira's C-Gear vibrated with a notification. Curious, she checked her PokéChirp account and saw several replies to her earlier post congratulating her on her win. One reply stood out—it was from the professor assistant. The message read:

"Congratulations on your presentation and win, Mira. If you consider writing a paper on your findings about Grass Pokémon moves and their potential effects on agriculture and gardening, I would be happy to help connect you with one of Professor Kukui's assistants. They specialize in these areas and could also assist in exploring the water element, which complements your work and adds further credibility to your hypothesis."

Mira's heart raced at the prospect.
