Why a mimic?!

Chapter 1 Awakening

, Rich," Michael said, exasperation clear in his voice. "You never go outside anymore. It's always school this, work that. When was the last time you actually lived?"

He wasn't wrong. Somewhere along the line, as adulthood crept in, I'd started distancing myself from my friends without realizing it. I already wasn't really active with them due to my hobbies, but it only got worse as we grew. One by one, they gave up trying to include me. All of them, except Michael.

Michael—the charismatic, outgoing, friendly guy who'd been my best friend since the fourth grade. He's everything I'm not, and yet, he never stopped trying to keep me around.

'I have to let him down gently,' I thought. It's not that I don't want to go out, I do. I really do. But I can't afford to take time off for fun like I used to.

"Look," I said after a moment. "Let's go another time. I have a deadline coming up, and I really need to get this paper submitted."

Michael's frown deepened, his expression shifting to something that felt like disappointment tinged with hurt. "You know what? Forget it, Rich. It's obvious you don't want to go out with us anymore, so spare me the excuses. I'll just leave."

Before I could respond, he turned and walked away. Watching his figure grow smaller as he disappeared into the distance, I felt a painful clutch on my heart. I looked up at the sky and let out a heavy sigh.

"And just like that, my last friend was gone."

With a solemn face, I turned and returned to my dorm.

When I got to my room, I said hi to my roommate, locked myself in, opened my laptop, and got to work. After four hours of mind-numbing typing, I closed my laptop and went to sleep, ready for an even more mundane day tomorrow now that I was truly alone. Eventually, after tossing and turning, I fell into a deep sleep—the Deepest sleep I've had in a while.

'I feel so weightless, so comfortable. Almost like I'm floating. I haven't had a rest like this since I was a kid. The burden and all the stress of life seemed nowhere to be found. But how?. I know I still have rent to pay and my classes start in a few hours. So why am I feeling so calm.'

"Yeah, you're welcome." Suddenly a loud voice boomed into My mind. The Voice sounded somewhat childish and immature. And yet so prominent and demanding of attention. I immediately opened my eyes or at least tried to.

' why can't I open my eyes? Wait, no why can't I open my mouth-oh sh*t!! I can't move!!!' I immediately start inwardly panicking. Am I In a coma? What am I gonna do about school? I paid way too much money just for all of it to go poof.

'Damn, I don't even have health Insurance. I'm so fuc*ed!

" for the love of me, calm down" the childish voice once again bellowed in my mind.

'there goes the loud voice again. What the hell is he doing in my coma.'

" first off you're not In a coma. You're dead. Hehe." The voice told him while chuckling.

' I'm what!? No, but that's impossible I remember going to sleep last night after doing my homework, I couldn't have died.'

" Okay okay, let me explain before you go yapping in my ear again. I'm an overseer, what your people call a 'god' and I've been newly assigned to your universe. I've decided to implement a new afterlife system and I needed a guinea pig, you were the best Candidate so I plucked you from your body and brought you here, there. Now you can ask your questions." he responded sounding as if he was talking to a child.

'.....' I was so shocked by the landslide of new information that I was stunned. What did he mean by "prime candidate".

"Oh, so no questions. I'll just continue then."

' No! I have questions. A lot of questions! First off, why couldn't you just pick somebody else? Secondly, Why can't I move? And lastly, how can I go back to my Body?!

" OK, one at a time. As for your first question, I already answered it. You were the prime candidate. Because of your nerdy lifestyle back on earth, you have quite an abundance of information on my Blueprint. My afterlife plans consist of integrating the lost souls of your world with another world. This world will resemble the games and novels that you used to spend all your time indulging in instead of hanging out with your friends. "

A sudden stinging feeling appeared in my chest at the mention of my former friends.

"Since you are my first expirement I'll give you a few perks along with allowing you to keep your memories. As for your second question, you can't move because I only brought your consciousness here. Your body would be quite useless for my plans. And lastly, your final question. As I told you before, you died. So no going back to earth for you."

'But what abo-.'

"Oh no! What happened, you suddenly cut off well I guess we just have to move along :). I'll be taking you to your new home now. Have fun!!" Suddenly I felt my entire self being dragged away to somewhere else. Then it all went black.

'What the hell?'

A certain amount of time later I finally came to.

'Not only did that asshole "God" Cut me off mid-sentence. he didn't even give me a warning before thrusting my entire consciousness somewhere else.

' After a long complaining session questioning the celestial beings hiring process, I realize something I probably should've realized a while ago.

'holy crap! I can feel!'

The ground.. wherever I was, It felt like old wooden planks. I try to open my eyes but to no avail. ' Huh? I can't even feel my eyelids.' Then a sudden thought sent shivers down my spine. 'What if I wasn't sent Into a normal body? He did tell me that my old body would be useless.' I started frantically checking for any bodily functions.

I tried using my arms and legs to no avail. I tried to hear my surroundings. I heard dripping sounds. The drips echoed all around me leading me to believe that I was in some kind of damp cave. Then I tried opening my mouth.

'A reaction!' The sound of Wood creaking and splintering resounded. ' What is that terrifying sound? Is that me?!'

Then I felt the air hit what appeared to be my tongue. I tried to move it around To feel the inside of my mouth. I felt nothing out of the ordinary until I went to feel my teeth. They felt sharp And rigid as if belonging to some kind of monster. Shrugging off the shock I went past the teeth, realizing that my tongue was a lot longer than I expected. I felt the outside of my mouth, not knowing what to expect. I felt what appeared to be wood of some sort. Moving my tongue over to what should've been the middle of my bottom lip. I felt some type of metal in the shape of a latch. Suddenly, a horrifying thought came to me.

' That childish God said that I was a prime candidate because of the knowledge that I obtained as a nerd. There was one monster in my games that perfectly fit my current description. There hated by every dungeon diver. And found on every floor. No, there's no way. There's got to be another explanation. Out of all the monsters in a dungeon,

Why did he make me a mimic?
