Chapter 13 - Surprise Party

The mansion was unusually lively as Kent moved through the halls, overseeing the preparations for the surprise dance party he had planned for Colette. The ballroom, which hadn't seen use in years, was transformed into a sparkling venue, complete with shimmering chandeliers, a grand buffet table, and a small stage for the live band he'd managed to hire. He wanted everything to be perfect for his wife.

He'd spent weeks organizing the event in secret, inviting members of the organization who weren't actively working that night. Though only a few dozen had decided to attend—most were too intimidated by Colette to dare mingling with her in a casual setting—Kent was determined to make the night special.

Meanwhile, in Colette's office, Oakley stood before her desk, shifting uncomfortably as he delivered the news.

"It's a dance party," he said, his tone carefully neutral. "Kent planned it for you. It's meant to be a surprise, but as your Consigliere, it's my duty to inform you of any events occurring under your roof."

Colette leaned back in her chair, a small smirk tugging at her lips. "A surprise party? How adorable. Of course, Kent would think of something like that."

Oakley adjusted his glasses. "He's gone to great lengths to keep it a secret. I assume you'll want to… act surprised?"

Colette chuckled, standing and stretching her wings. "Oh, absolutely. Let's not ruin his fun. Besides, I'm curious to see how he's planned it all."

---

By the time the party was set to begin, the ballroom was filled with soft music and warm light. Guests mingled hesitantly, their voices hushed as they glanced around the room. When Colette finally entered, dressed in a stunning deep blue gown with thunderbolt embroidery and a slit that showed off her powerful legs, the room fell silent.

"Surprise!" the gathered guests called out, their voices uneven but enthusiastic.

Colette placed a clawed hand over her chest, her expression feigning shock. "Oh, my! I didn't expect this at all!"

Kent stepped forward, smiling up at her. He was dressed in a sharp suit, though his tie was slightly askew—evidence of his nerves and rushed preparations. "Did we get you?" he asked, his voice full of hope.

Colette's smirk softened into a genuine smile as she looked at him. "Completely," she said, though Kent could tell she wasn't entirely sincere.

He laughed lightly, shaking his head. "You're a terrible actress, Colette. But it's fine. I just wanted to do something special for you."

Her heart softened at his words, and she reached out to gently cup his cheek. "Darling, you didn't have to go through all this trouble. But… thank you. It means a lot to me."

The sincerity in her voice made Kent's smile widen. "It's your party. Just enjoy yourself."

Colette paused for a moment, looking around at the decorations, the guests, and the effort Kent had put into everything. She knew this wasn't just for her—it was his way of celebrating their relationship, their partnership. Touched, she decided then and there to make the party about both of them.

Turning back to Kent, she extended her hand. "How about we make it our party?"

He blinked, surprised. "What do you mean?"

She grinned, her sharp blue eyes sparkling with mischief. "Let's start with a dance. Just you and me."

Kent glanced around nervously. "But everyone's watching…"

"Let them," Colette said, her voice firm but affectionate. "It's our night, and I want to share it with you."

Taking her hand, Kent allowed himself to be led onto the ballroom floor. The band began to play a slow, romantic tune, and the guests stepped back to give them space.

Colette towered over him, her seven-foot frame making their pairing look almost comical to some of the onlookers. But neither of them cared. They moved together with surprising grace, Colette's powerful wings folded neatly behind her as she guided Kent through the steps.

"You're surprisingly good at this," Kent said, looking up at her with a smile.

"And you're surprisingly light on your feet," Colette replied, her tone teasing. She twirled him gently, eliciting a small laugh from Kent as he stumbled slightly before regaining his footing.

Despite their size difference, they found a rhythm that worked, moving in sync as the music swelled around them. Colette's tail occasionally brushed against Kent's legs, and her claws rested lightly on his back, ensuring he never felt overwhelmed by her strength.

The room seemed to fade away as they danced, their focus entirely on each other. For Colette, this was a rare moment of vulnerability—a chance to let go of her responsibilities and simply enjoy being with the man she loved. For Kent, it was a reminder of why he adored her, even when her possessive nature and fierce temper could be overwhelming.

As the song came to an end, the guests erupted into applause, their initial nervousness replaced by genuine admiration for the couple. Colette and Kent shared a smile, their hands still intertwined.

"Thank you," Colette said softly, her voice just loud enough for Kent to hear. "For everything."

"You deserve it," Kent replied, squeezing her hand. "I'm just glad you're happy."

Colette leaned down, pressing a kiss to his forehead. "I'm more than happy, Kent. I'm lucky."

The night continued with more dancing, laughter, and lighthearted moments. Colette took the time to mingle with the guests, though she kept Kent close by her side, her tail occasionally curling possessively around his waist.

As the party wound down, the two of them found themselves alone on the balcony overlooking the city. The cool night air was a welcome contrast to the warmth of the ballroom, and the quiet gave them a chance to reflect.

"I think that went well," Kent said, leaning against the railing.

"It was perfect," Colette replied, standing beside him. Her arm draped over his shoulders, pulling him close. "And it wouldn't have been possible without you."

Kent blushed, scratching the back of his neck. "Well, I'm glad you enjoyed it."

Colette turned him to face her, her sharp blue eyes filled with affection. "I don't just mean the party, Kent. I mean everything. You've brought light into my life in ways I never thought possible. Tonight was wonderful, but it's just one more reason I'm grateful for you."

Kent smiled, his blush deepening. "You're going to make me cry if you keep talking like that."

Colette chuckled, leaning down to kiss him softly. "Good. You're cute when you're emotional."

The two of them stayed on the balcony for a while longer, enjoying the quiet moments together. For Colette, it was a rare reprieve from the chaos of her world. For Kent, it was another chance to show her how much she meant to him.

And as the first hints of dawn began to paint the sky, they returned to their room, their hearts full and their bond stronger than ever.
