When I woke up, the bed was empty. I quickly got up and found a nurse. Once I explained the situation to her, we started to ask people if they have seen the guy around. Our search ended at the front yard, as we found him and some scary looking guy together. We approached them, which ended up with him and the nurse having a small chat, where the nurse called him "Mr. Rosfield". That's when I noticed how I knew nothing about him at all. Once we were at the room, I asked his name.
-So Mr. Rosfield, do you have a first name?
-Yeah I do, it's Lance. What's yours?
-I'm Alayna Frost.
-Nice to meet you.
He slowly approached the bed in the meantime, let out a grunt and laid down.
-Does it hurt?
-A little but it shouldn't be something I can't endure.
-I wanted to thank you.
As I said that my voice started to get shaky.
-Hey, it's fine. It wasn't your fault, you don't need to feel bad about some bastard's action.
-Yeah, I know.
I sat down on the couch, trying to find something to chat about.
-So how old are you?
I asked.
-I'm 32, 33 in a month or so. You?
-Ah I'm 28. Do you work?
-Yeah, I'm a pilot.
-That's really cool, I'm currently unemployed. What airline do you work for?
-It's army.
-Like a helicopter or something?
-No I pilot a fighter.
-Oh, but they said you blacked out because of an adrenaline rush.
As that sentence slipped my lips, I felt like I was calling him a liar, but it made no sense at all. I could see him starting to kind of blush, it was easy to notice since his cheeks were pale.
-Well, if I had my plane with me I'm sure I'd be in better condition.
He let out a forced chuckle. I could see that he felt bad about the situation, but I couldn't bring myself to believe it still. I told him that I needed to get my phone from the reception where it was being charged, and left the room. Once I had my phone, I called my friend Kayla, who has been working for the army recruitment office of this town for the past five years ever since the war was over. After some chatting, I asked her about Lance, which she tried to find some information on but wasn't able to. I went back inside the room and asked.
-Why did you lie?
-About what?
-Being a pilot. My friend works for army recruitment but she couldn't find your name anywhere.
-Hmm. Let me see if I can sort this out, can you give me a few minutes so I can make a few phone calls?
He didn't wait for my response, but grabbed his own phone from the nightstand. He looked at the screen swiping around, then put the phone on his ear first, but decided to put the call on speaker. Once the phone connected, he said:
-Hey Triss, I need a favor. I'm looking for a girl...
-Aren't we all looking for someone?
-...Yeah I'm looking for a female aged 25-30 army recruitment most likely based in Sinoha. On the clock right now, might have...
-Yeah I think I got your girl, is she Kayla?
He looked at me with asking eyes so I shaked my head up and down, trying to understand what was going on.
-Yeah Kayla sounds about right, can you give me a number?
-Sending it over now.
-Alright thanks, so how have...
-I have been fine, you have been stabbed, how did that happen?
-Long story, look I really need to hang up.
-Alright, have a quick recovery.
And the call was done, I wasn't even sure if telling them it was Kayla was the right choice, but I heard the phone ringing again. It was picked up, and Lance said.
-Hey this is Lance Rosfield, callsign Red, badge number 4504142. Are you Kayla?
-Yes?
-Okay, I'm here with Alayna, she mentioned you running my name on the system, am I right?
-Yeah, but it returned nothing. How did you find my number?
-It's a long story, who runs your branch? Is it still that half bald asshole?
-Yeah Mr. Kylian still oversees us, in fact he is right now standing right next to me.
-Okay great, put me on speaker... Hey Josh, can you hear me?
Some voice that I didn't recognize answered.
-Yes Lance, I do hear you.
You could feel the anger in his voice.
-Kayla is my friend, well actually, a long story for the next time I make you buy me a drink. But do you understand?
-I do.
-You do what?
-I do sir.
-Good. Alright, I'm gonna hang up now, ah, one more thing. Give my files to Kayla, I need them for some reason that is none of your business.
He hung up the phone and turned around to me.
-Alright, you will get my files in about 5 minutes.
He started to straighten up, put his flippers on and with a grunt he got out of the bed.
-I will get some stuff to eat, I believe you are hungry as well. Anything you prefer or dislike?
-Not really.
Came out of my mouth feeling shocked and possibly completely red from embarrasment. He got out of the room slowly with his IV hanger, leaving me alone in the room. A few minutes passed and I felt my phone vibrate. It was a text from Kayla, reading "Who the fuck did you meet" with a file named "Lance Rosfield". Most of the pages were classified, most words were painted over with black markers. Apparently, Lance was a war hero, and I questioned him about blacking out.
