Chereads / LUX: A Tale of Two Worlds / Chapter 13 - Ultimatum 2

Chapter 13 - Ultimatum 2

The council chamber was a silent monolith, its sleek, obsidian walls gleaming faintly under the dim lights. The room felt alive with tension as Aether Lumenis and Arath Syn entered side by side. They were met with the cold stares of Darius Veryon, Maelis Vorn, Ivor Caelis, and Selric Drayn—four of the most influential, and dangerous, members of the dissenting council.

The air was thick with hostility. Aether's jaw tightened as his eyes scanned the faces of his adversaries, his heart pounding against his ribs. Arath, on the other hand, maintained an outward calm, though his mind raced with possibilities. Both men knew this meeting would decide the future, not just of LUX, but of Aetron itself.

"You summoned us," Aether said, breaking the silence. His voice was sharp, his words deliberate.

Darius leaned forward, his elbows resting on the table as he clasped his hands together. "We did. And we'll get straight to the point. The time for pretense is over."

Aether's eyes narrowed. "Pretense? Explain yourself."

"It's no secret," Maelis interjected smoothly, her sharp features illuminated by the faint glow of the room. "We know your son, Kael, carries LUX. And that makes him—how shall I put this?—the most valuable and dangerous being on this planet."

Aether's fists clenched at his sides. "Leave my son out of this."

"How can we?" Ivor's voice boomed across the room, his large frame shifting as he leaned forward. "Your son is the problem. He walks around with the most powerful piece of technology in existence embedded in his spine, and you expect us to ignore it? You've made him a target—a walking disaster waiting to happen."

"Enough," Arath snapped, his calm demeanor fracturing slightly. "You speak as though LUX is some uncontrollable force, but you know nothing about its capabilities. It is under control, and Kael is more than capable of handling it."

Darius chuckled, the sound cold and dismissive. "Under control? That's a comforting lie, Syn. But let's not kid ourselves. LUX has already caused instability across Aetron. Civil unrest is brewing. Factions are forming. And it all circles back to your invention."

"You speak of unrest," Aether countered, his voice rising, "but you're the ones stoking the flames. Your secret meetings, your assassination attempts—don't think we don't know who's behind them."

"Assassination?" Selric's voice was calm, almost amused. "A bold accusation. Do you have proof?"

Arath stepped forward, his piercing gaze locking onto Selric. "Proof? We don't need proof to know the truth. You've been working in the shadows, trying to undermine us at every turn. But let me make this clear: you will not take LUX from Kael. Not now. Not ever."

Maelis smirked, her expression one of calculated superiority. "Is that so? And what will you do when the entire planet turns against you? Do you think you can stand against the will of the people?"

"The people?" Aether's laugh was bitter. "Don't insult us, Maelis. This isn't about the people. This is about your lust for power. You want LUX because you're afraid of losing control."

"Control is what keeps Aetron from falling apart," Darius said, his tone sharp. "Without it, we descend into chaos. LUX is a weapon of chaos. And we cannot allow it to remain in the hands of a child."

Aether stepped closer to the table, his voice dangerously low. "If you think for a second that I'll hand over my son to you—"

"We don't need your permission," Ivor interrupted, his tone equally menacing. "We're giving you a chance to do this peacefully. Don't make us take it by force."

The room fell into a heavy silence, the weight of the threat hanging in the air. Aether's eyes burned with fury, his body tense as he resisted the urge to lash out. Beside him, Arath placed a calming hand on his shoulder, his own anger simmering beneath the surface.

"You think you can take it by force?" Arath said, his voice cold and measured. "You'd plunge Aetron into war over your own paranoia?"

"War?" Darius repeated, a faint smirk tugging at his lips. "Don't be so dramatic, Syn. This isn't about war. It's about preventing one. But if you force our hand, we will do whatever is necessary to protect Aetron."

Aether's fists clenched tighter, his voice trembling with restrained anger. "You speak of protecting Aetron, but all you care about is consolidating your power. You'd destroy everything we've built, everything we stand for, just to satisfy your greed."

Maelis rose from her seat, her expression icy. "Spare us the moral grandstanding, Lumenis. You've already made your choice. You've chosen to put your son above the future of our planet. And that choice will cost you."

"Is that a threat?" Aether demanded, stepping closer.

"It's a reality," Selric said, his calm demeanor making his words all the more chilling. "You've backed yourself into a corner, Aether. And now you have two options: surrender LUX, or prepare for the consequences."

Aether glared at the four council members, his body trembling with barely contained rage. He could feel the weight of their ultimatum, the cold inevitability of their words. But he refused to back down.

"LUX stays with Kael," he said, his voice steady despite the storm raging inside him. "And if you think you can take it from him, you're welcome to try. But I promise you, it will be the last mistake you ever make."

The room grew colder, the tension palpable as the two sides stared each other down. For a moment, it seemed as though violence was inevitable. But then Darius rose from his seat, his expression unreadable.

"You've made your position clear," he said, his voice devoid of emotion. "And so have we. The clock is ticking, Lumenis. Make your choice wisely."

With that, the dissenting council members turned and left the chamber, their footsteps echoing ominously in the silence.

As the doors closed behind them, Aether let out a heavy breath, his shoulders slumping under the weight of the confrontation.

"They won't stop," he said quietly, his voice filled with a mixture of anger and despair.

"No," Arath agreed, his gaze fixed on the door. "They won't. But we'll be ready."

___

The quiet hum of Arath Syn's personal study was a stark contrast to the intensity of the earlier meeting. Aether Lumenis paced the room restlessly, his normally composed demeanor shattered. Arath sat at his desk, poring over a series of holographic blueprints that hovered above the table, but even his usual focus was strained.

"They know," Aether said abruptly, breaking the silence. "They know Kael carries LUX."

Arath looked up, his sharp golden eyes meeting Aether's steel-blue gaze. "Of course they know. It was only a matter of time before they put the pieces together."

Aether stopped pacing, his hands clenched at his sides. "Do you understand what this means? They'll stop at nothing to take it from him. Darius, Maelis, Selric, Ivor—they won't hesitate to sacrifice anyone or anything to get what they want. And they have the power to do it."

Arath leaned back in his chair, his expression grim. "I know, Aether. I've been preparing for this since the day we gave Kael LUX. But we can't afford to let fear dictate our actions. We need a plan."

Aether exhaled sharply, running a hand through his hair. "A plan? Against them? They control the council, the military, the resources of half the planet. What do we have?"

"We have Kael," Arath said firmly, rising from his seat. "We have LUX. And we have the truth on our side."

"The truth?" Aether laughed bitterly. "The truth doesn't matter to them. They'll twist it, bury it, and replace it with their own version. You saw them today—they're ready to go to war over this."

Arath stepped closer, placing a reassuring hand on Aether's shoulder. "Which is why we have to act now. We need to protect Kael at all costs. Increase his security. Keep him under constant watch. If they come for him, we have to be ready."

Aether nodded reluctantly. "I'll contact our trusted guards. No one comes near him without our approval. But what about Kael? He deserves to know what we're up against."

Arath's expression softened. "You're right. We can't keep him in the dark. He needs to understand the danger he's in."

---

Kael sat cross-legged on his bed, staring at the faint glow of his translucent veins as they pulsed rhythmically beneath his synthetic skin. His mind was a tangled web of thoughts—about LUX, the voice in his head, and the unknown future that loomed ahead.

A knock at the door pulled him from his reverie. "Come in," he called.

The door slid open, revealing Aether and Arath. Kael sat up straighter, noting the tension etched into their faces.

"Is everything okay?" he asked, his voice tinged with concern.

Aether and Arath exchanged a glance before stepping inside and closing the door behind them.

"Kael," Aether began, his tone unusually serious. "We need to talk."

Kael's heart sank. "What happened?"

Arath stepped forward, his golden eyes fixed on Kael. "The dissenting council members—Darius, Maelis, and the others—they know you carry LUX."

Kael's breath caught. "They know? How?"

"They've been watching us," Aether said, his voice heavy. "It was only a matter of time before they pieced it together. And now they've given us an ultimatum—surrender LUX, or face the consequences."

Kael's eyes widened. "What kind of consequences?"

"War," Arath said bluntly. "They've made it clear that they're willing to do whatever it takes to get LUX. And they're not bluffing."

Kael swallowed hard, the weight of their words sinking in. "So what do we do?"

"We protect you," Aether said firmly. "Starting now, your security will be increased. You won't go anywhere without a guard. And you'll stay out of sight as much as possible."

Kael frowned. "You want me to hide?"

"It's not hiding," Arath said. "It's survival. You're the key to everything, Kael. If they get their hands on you, it's over."

"But I can't just sit around doing nothing," Kael protested. "If they're coming after me, I need to be ready to fight."

"And you will be," Aether assured him. "But we can't afford to take any risks. Not now."

Kael's fists clenched at his sides. "This isn't fair. I didn't ask for any of this."

"I know," Aether said softly, his voice filled with regret. "But this is the reality we're facing. And we need you to trust us."

Kael looked between them, his steel-blue eyes filled with uncertainty. "Fine. But if it comes to a fight, I'm not going to sit on the sidelines."

Arath placed a hand on Kael's shoulder. "You won't have to. But for now, we need to focus on keeping you safe."

---

The following hours were a whirlwind of activity. Aether and Arath worked tirelessly, coordinating with their most trusted allies to bolster Kael's security. Guards were stationed around their home, surveillance systems were upgraded, and contingency plans were put in place.

Despite their efforts, an undercurrent of unease lingered. Aether couldn't shake the feeling that they were fighting a losing battle. The dissenting council members had resources and influence that far exceeded their own, and every step they took felt like a drop in the ocean.

"They're going to come for him, Arath," Aether said late that night as they reviewed their plans. "No matter what we do, they'll find a way."

"Then we'll be ready," Arath said, though his voice betrayed his own doubts.

Aether leaned back in his chair, running a hand through his hair. "I just hope we're not too late."

---

Meanwhile, Kael sat in his room, staring out the window at the distant city lights. The weight of his situation pressed down on him like a heavy cloak, suffocating and relentless.

"Are you okay?"

The voice startled him, but he recognized it immediately.

"LUX," he said, his tone wary.

"Yes," the voice replied.

Kael sighed, rubbing his temples. "This is all so messed up. My dad and Arath are doing everything they can to protect me, but I feel like I'm just waiting for the inevitable."

"They care about you," LUX said. "They want to keep you safe."

"I know," Kael said quietly. "But it feels like no matter what they do, it's not going to be enough."

There was a pause before LUX responded. "You are stronger than you realize, Kael. And so are they. Together, you can face whatever comes your way."

Kael's gaze hardened, a flicker of determination igniting in his eyes. "Then we'll fight. If they want LUX, they'll have to go through me first."

---

The tension between the two factions continued to build, the storm clouds of conflict gathering on the horizon. Aether, Arath, and Kael knew the road ahead would be treacherous, but they were determined to stand their ground.

Because some things were worth fighting for.
