Chapter 64 - Chapter 64: Academy and Association

The fire crackled softly, its warmth chasing away the chill of the Aetherion night. Kael sat cross-legged on a fallen log, his arms still aching from the relentless training Lyris had put him through earlier in the day. His sword lay within arm's reach, a reminder of the progress he had made, however small. Around the fire, his companions settled into the quiet rhythm of an evening meal. The simple fare of roasted bread and dried meats was far from luxurious, but it was enough to replenish their strength.

Lia leaned against a tree trunk, the flickering firelight reflecting in her green eyes as she studied the group. Beside her, Mareth took enthusiastic bites of his food, seemingly unaware of the tension in the air. Lyris, ever composed, sat sharpening her sword with practiced precision, the soft scrape of steel against whetstone blending with the ambient sounds of the forest.

The silence stretched, broken only by the occasional crackle of the fire and the distant hoot of an owl. Kael sensed the unspoken thoughts that lingered among them, but it was Lia who finally gave voice to the questions that hung heavy in the air.

"So," she began, her tone even, though her words carried weight. "What do you do after this?"

Kael looked up, confused. "After what?"

"After you the Sacred Realm Heart trial," Lia clarified, her gaze sharp as it swept over the group. "What's the plan after you awaken your systems fully and return to Aetherion?"

Mareth paused mid-bite, blinking as if the question had caught him completely off guard. He glanced at Kael and Lyris before scratching the back of his head. "Honestly, I haven't thought that far ahead," he admitted, his tone sheepish. "I've been so focused on surviving this trial that I didn't really consider what comes next."

Kael nodded in agreement, though a flicker of embarrassment crossed his face. "Same here. I've been taking things one step at a time."

Lia sighed, her expression a mix of exasperation and understanding. "I figured as much," she said. "But you can't afford to be aimless. Once we're out of the Sacred Realm, the world won't just wait for us to figure things out. If we don't have a clear plan, we'll fall behind."

"What do you suggest, then?" Mareth asked, leaning forward. "what are your plans."

"I do," Lia replied. "The first thing we'll need to do is register with the Awakener Association."

Kael frowned. "The Awakener Association? What's that?"

"It's the governing body for all awakeners," Lia explained, her tone patient but firm. "They're responsible for tracking and regulating individuals who've unlocked their systems. If we don't register, we'll be considered rogues—unauthorized and untrustworthy. And trust me, that's not a label you want. It'll make it nearly impossible to move freely, let alone find allies or opportunities."

"That sounds… serious," Kael said, his brow furrowing.

"It is," Lia confirmed. "The Association keeps order among awakeners. They provide resources, guidance, and missions, but they also enforce strict rules. It's not just about laws—it's about reputation. Without their approval, we'll be seen as a threat."

Mareth tilted his head, considering her words. "So, registering is just a formality, right? We go in, fill out some paperwork, and that's it?"

"Not quite," Lyris interjected, her voice low but commanding. She paused her sharpening, her crimson eyes glinting in the firelight as she looked at Mareth. Our system needs to be fully activated. They don't just hand out recognition to anyone."

Lia nodded. "Exactly. And once we're registered, we'll have to decide on the next step. For me—and for Lyris—it's clear what that is."

Kael leaned forward, intrigued. "What do you mean?"

"We're joining the Radiant Blades Academy," Lia said, her voice steady.

"The Academy?" Kael repeated, his curiosity piqued.

"It's one of the most prestigious academies in Aetherion," Lia explained. "Every year, they hold entrance exams to select the strongest and most promising awakeners. It's where people like us go to hone their skills and prepare for the challenges ahead. The Academy isn't just a school—it's a proving ground."

Mareth raised an eyebrow. "Proving ground? For what?"

"For everything," Lia replied. "The Academy trains its students not just in combat, but in strategy, leadership, and understanding the deeper nature of their systems. It's where alliances are forged, reputations are built, and futures are decided. Those who graduate from the Academy aren't just strong—they're respected. And in a world like ours, respect can be as valuable as power."

Kael nodded slowly, the weight of her words sinking in. "So, you're saying the Academy is the best place to grow?"

"It's more than that," Lyris said, her tone measured. "The Academy is a gateway to the higher echelons of Aetherion. The strongest awakeners, the most influential leaders, the people who shape the world—they all pass through its halls. If we're serious about making a difference, about being more than just survivors, the Academy is where we need to be."

"And the entrance exams?" Mareth asked.

"They're held at the end of the year," Lia said. "It's a grueling process designed to weed out the weak. Only the best are admitted. But once you're in, the opportunities are endless."

Kael's gaze flickered to the fire, his mind racing. Everything they had done so far every battle, every trial had been about survival. But now, a new path was unfolding, one that demanded more than just strength. It demanded purpose.

"So, it's settled?" Lia asked, looking at each of them in turn. "After the Sacred Realm Heart, you register with the Awakener Association and prepare for the Academy exams?"

Kael tightened his grip on his sword, a sense of determination rising within him. "It's a plan," he said. "And it's better than wandering aimlessly."

Mareth grinned, though there was a hint of nervousness in his expression. "Guess we're aiming for the top, then. Can't say I expected this when we first started."

"Good," Lyris said simply. "Because aiming for anything less would be a waste."

The conversation shifted to lighter topics as the night wore on, their laughter and banter filling the clearing. But even as they shared stories and jokes, the weight of the future lingered in the back of their minds.

For Kael, the path ahead felt daunting but clear. The Sacred Realm Heart was their immediate goal, but beyond it stretched a world of challenges he could scarcely imagine. The Academy of Radiant Blades loomed on the horizon, a beacon of opportunity and a crucible of growth.

As the fire burned low and the stars filled the sky, Kael resolved to face whatever came next with unwavering determination. Together, they would forge their destiny in the halls of the Academy—and beyond.
