Chapter 62 - Chapter 62: A Proposal and a Challenge

The sun hovered high above the dense forest, its light streaming through the canopy to illuminate the moss-covered trail. The group was taking a brief rest, the faint chirping of birds and rustling leaves filling the silence. Mareth, always one to fill a quiet moment with chatter, glanced at Kael before clearing his throat loudly, drawing everyone's attention.

"So," Mareth began, flashing his signature grin, "I've been thinking."

Lyris raised an eyebrow, leaning against a nearby tree with her arms crossed. "A dangerous pastime for someone like you."

Mareth ignored her jab, addressing Lia directly. "You seem like kind-hearted, reasonable folk. What would you say to letting us travel with you for a bit?"

Lia, who was seated on a rock inspecting her map, looked up in mild surprise. "Travel with us?"

Kael tensed slightly beside him. "Mareth, we've barely just recovered. We can't just—"

Mareth cut him off with a wave of his hand. "What's the alternative? Wander around aimlessly until we trip over something that eats us? No thanks." He turned back to Lia, his expression earnest. "You saved our lives, and you clearly know this land better than we do. We're… a little out of our depth here."

Lia's lips twitched into a faint smile. "That much is obvious."

Kael sighed, running a hand through his hair. "We don't want to be a burden. If it's too much trouble, we'll manage on our own."

Before Lia could respond, Lyris pushed off the tree she was leaning against and approached, her crimson eyes narrowing slightly. "You're right about one thing. You will be a burden."

Mareth winced at her bluntness, while Kael bristled. "We can pull our weight," Kael said firmly, though his tone carried an edge of uncertainty.

Lyris's gaze swept over them critically, her expression hard as stone. "You barely survived your last fight. You're weak, untrained, and reckless. If you want to keep up with us and survive you'll need to work harder. A lot harder."

Mareth, ever the optimist, tried to laugh it off. "Come on, we can't be that bad. I mean, I might not be the most graceful, but—"

"You're terrible," Lyris interrupted flatly.

Kael stepped forward, his frustration bubbling over. "Look, we didn't ask for your help before, and we're not asking for your approval now. If you don't want us around, just say so."

Lyris's sharp gaze locked onto his, unflinching. "If I didn't want you around, you wouldn't still be here."

The tension in the air was palpable, and for a moment, it seemed like Kael might argue further. But Lia stepped in, her voice calm but firm. "Enough, both of you."

She turned to Mareth, her expression softening. "If you want to come with us, I won't stop you. But Lyris is right. This land is dangerous, and you'll need to be ready for anything."

Kael looked like he wanted to protest, but Mareth clapped him on the back, grinning. "See? Told you they wouldn't mind."

Kael sighed in defeat, muttering under his breath, "Why do I let you talk me into these things?"

Lia smiled, though her expression carried a hint of concern. "We're near the Sacred Trail Heart. It's a dangerous area, but also one of the best places to train and gather resources. If you're serious about traveling with us, it's as good a place as any to start."

Mareth gulped, glancing nervously at Kael. "Sounds like a lovely vacation spot."

Kael, despite his earlier resistance, straightened his shoulders. "Fine. If that's where we're going, then we'll handle it."

Lyris smirked faintly, a glint of challenge in her eyes. "We'll see."

As the group prepared to set off again, Lia walked over to Kael, her voice low so the others wouldn't hear. "Don't let Lyris get to you. She's harsh, but she's not wrong. This world is dangerous, and you'll need to adapt quickly."

Kael nodded, his jaw set. "I know. We'll figure it out."

She gave him a reassuring smile before rejoining Lyris at the front of the group. Mareth, meanwhile, sidled up to Kael with a cheeky grin.

"Well, that went well, don't you think?"

Kael shot him a withering look. "You're insufferable, you know that?"

"And yet, you keep me around," Mareth replied, throwing an arm over Kael's shoulder as they followed the others down the trail.

Despite his annoyance, Kael couldn't help but smile faintly. Whatever challenges lay ahead, they would face them together even if it meant enduring Mareth's endless antics and Lyris's withering stares.

The Sacred Trail Heart awaited, and with it, the promise of danger, growth, and perhaps, a chance to prove themselves in this strange, unforgiving world.
