Chapter 2 - CHAPTER FOUR

Shattered Illusions

Becky's heart pounded as the phone call ended abruptly. Her hand trembled, still holding the device as she stared at Ben, who was watching her intently from across the room.

"Who was that?" he asked, his voice low but with an underlying tension.

Becky hesitated, the words still echoing in her mind. "Someone who knows everything," she said, her voice barely a whisper. "About... about us. And the baby."

Ben's expression darkened, and he stepped closer. "What did they say?"

She quickly relayed the conversation, describing the cryptic warning and the chilling tone of the voice on the phone. Ben's jaw tightened, and there was a flicker of something darker in his eyes. He turned away, pacing for a moment before stopping abruptly.

"We need to find out who's behind this," Ben said, his voice a hard edge. "Whoever they are, they're not just after you they're after me, too."

"Ben, who are these people?" Becky asked, stepping forward, her fear giving way to a new determination. "You keep saying this is bigger than us. But I need to know the truth."

Ben looked at her, his face a mixture of frustration and resolve. "I'll tell you everything soon, I promise. But not right now. Trust me, you don't want to get tangled up in this mess."

But Becky wasn't sure she could trust him anymore. Everything was unraveling too quickly, and Ben's promises felt like empty words.

Before she could respond, her phone buzzed again...a message from an unknown number.

"Meet me at the old pier. Alone. I have something you need to see. - J"

Becky's heart skipped a beat. "Who's J?" she whispered.

Ben's eyes flashed with recognition, but he didn't say anything. His jaw clenched. "Don't go."

But the fear, the uncertainty, gnawed at her. She had to know what was going on. She had to know if Ben was telling her the truth or if she was walking into a trap.

By the time Becky arrived at the old pier, the evening fog had rolled in, shrouding everything in an eerie stillness. The creaking of the docked boats and the sound of waves lapping at the shore were the only noises breaking the silence. Her footsteps echoed in the mist as she walked toward the lone figure standing at the edge of the pier.

It was a man, dressed in a long coat, his face obscured by the shadow of his hood. As Becky approached, he turned to face her, and she froze.

It wasn't just any man, it was Liam.

Her breath caught in her throat. "Liam...?" she asked, her voice shaking.

He gave a cold, humorless smile. "I knew you'd show up. You always were too curious for your own good."

"Why are you here?" Becky demanded. "What's going on? What does Ben have to do with this?"

Liam stepped closer, his gaze cold. "Ben isn't the man you think he is. He's deeper than you realize. There are forces behind him dangerous people who will do anything to keep their secrets hidden."

Becky's mind raced. "What are you talking about? What secrets?"

Liam hesitated for a moment before pulling a small, worn envelope from his coat. He handed it to her without a word, and Becky's fingers trembled as she took it.

"Open it," Liam said, his voice urgent. "You need to know the truth. All of it."

Becky tore open the envelope, revealing a series of photographs more like surveillance shots than anything personal. They showed Ben in various locations, meeting with people she didn't recognize. But one photograph caught her breath. It was of Ben, standing in a lavish office, shaking hands with a man she knew all too well.

Her father.

Her heart raced as she looked at Liam, her confusion and anger flaring up. "Why is my father involved in this? What does he have to do with Ben?"

Liam's eyes darkened. "Your father isn't who you think he is either. He's been working with Ben on some... very questionable deals. It's not just business, Becky. This is about power, control, and corruption. Your family's name is tangled in all of it."

Becky felt like the ground had been ripped from beneath her. Her father? She had always seen him as a distant, authoritative figure, but never someone capable of betrayal. And now this Ben, someone she thought she knew, connected to her father in a web of deceit.

Before she could process it, the sound of footsteps echoed behind them. Becky whirled around to see a group of men emerging from the shadows, their faces obscured by masks.

Liam's expression turned grim. "It's too late. They know you're here."

The men moved swiftly, and before Becky could react, one of them grabbed her arm, pulling her toward the water. Panic surged through her as she struggled against his grip.

"Liam!" she screamed. "Help!"

Liam's eyes flickered with something guilt? Regret? He stepped forward, but then he froze.

"I'm sorry," he said, almost too quietly for her to hear. "This is bigger than you or me."

And then, to Becky's shock, he turned and disappeared into the fog.

"NO!" she screamed, but the men had already started to pull her toward the edge of the pier. She could see the dark waters below, the crashing waves that threatened to swallow her whole.

Just as one of the men raised a hand to push her, there was a sudden commotion another figure emerged from the shadows. This time, it was Ben.

With a roar of fury, he lunged at the men, knocking one of them off balance. "Let her go!" he shouted, his voice filled with rage.

But the group didn't relent. Becky's world seemed to slow as chaos erupted around her. Ben was fighting .....fighting for her, but the odds were against them.

In the struggle, one of the men drew a weapon, aiming it at Ben. Becky's heart stopped as she realized what was about to happen. She screamed, desperate to stop it, but in that moment, everything seemed to blur.

A loud crack split the air. Ben crumpled to the ground, his hand instinctively clutching his side. The men scattered into the mist, leaving her breathless and terrified.

Becky dropped to her knees, her hands trembling as she tried to stop the bleeding from Ben's wound. Her mind raced, trying to understand what had just happened, what she had just learned.

But before she could process it all, a final message flashed across her phone screen.

"I hope you've learned enough, Becky. The game is just beginning."

As the world around her spun, Becky knew that everything was about to change. She was no longer just an observer in this twisted world, she was a player in a game of lies, betrayal, and violence.

And there was no turning back.
