Chapter 1 - Prologue

It was a rare sunny day. Although the storm was still raging ten kilometers away, the aurora above could be clearly seen in the city. For most people, this was an ordinary morning that couldn't be more ordinary.

With the sound of six bells, the city built of mithril gradually became noisy.

A person wrapped up tightly brushed off the snowflakes on his cloak and looked at the wooden sign hanging outside the building, which depicted an arm holding a shield.

"It seems this is it, the Adventurer's Guild."

There were not many people in the guild. Only a few Northern Elves were playing poker at the table in the corner. Seeing someone coming in, they raised their heads and took a quick glance before continuing to play cards.

The man walked to the table in the farthest corner and sat down. He took off his hood, revealing a young face. He looked about twenty years old, with black hair and eyes, a typical Thalansi. Then, he rang the bell.

"A glass of blueberry wine." He put down three silver coins.

As time passed, more and more people came, but most of them sat with their friends or acquaintances, bragging or gambling. No wonder. Due to the blizzard, Aurora City was almost completely blocked, and correspondingly, there were far fewer commissions.

But these were interrupted by the sound of a door being kicked open. When everyone wanted to see who this reckless person was, the mithril rose emblem on his breastplate made everyone shut up - this was the lord's attendant. He pinned a piece of parchment to the task board and then left by kicking the door open again.

With the attendant's departure, almost all the people in the hall gathered around the task board.

"A direct commission from the Regent! How rare! The reward seems reliable."

"Read it to me. What on earth is this all about? I can't read the Elven curlicue characters!"

"...At this extraordinary time...Explore the underground path leading outside the Northern Lands...The reward is 1,500 pounds of mithril..."

Everyone present gasped. You should know that when His Highness the Grand Duke got engaged to the Princess Consort, the congratulatory gift for the Aurora Palace was only 150 pounds of mithril.

1,500 pounds of mithril was enough for three or four families to live a life of extreme luxury for a lifetime.

After a brief silence, the noise instantly filled the entire hall. Many adventurers shouted loudly about their abilities and patted their chests, making promises similar to sharing the reward equally and not stabbing each other in the back after the matter was completed, while pointing to the gods.

Among this group of people, the Thalansi had been sitting in the corner all along. He drank the fruit wine in front of him without saying a word, and scanned the entire hall with his maroon pupils. It was not until most of the people had left that he finished the last sip of wine.

"That..."

A timid voice interrupted the Thalansi's call for another drink.

"What's the matter?" The Thalansi raised his head, and a young man with long black hair and a bow and arrow on his back appeared in his field of vision.

His eyelid twitched involuntarily, but he quickly suppressed this impulse.

"Excuse me, are you alone?" This timid Highland young man, who seemed to have just come out of the tribe, asked with what seemed like all his courage.

He quickly glanced at the young man.

"Yes."

"Great. May I ask if you can travel with me?" The young man suddenly seemed relaxed and changed to a slightly more cheerful tone.

He looked at the young man and the people behind the young man, and his eyelid twitched again.

A Northern Elf spellcaster, a Highland warrior, plus this Highland ranger, the young man.

He mumbled something, but still stood up and stretched.

"All right, but I want to sign a contract under the witness of the aurora, stipulating our mutual rights and obligations, the distribution of spoils and rewards, and the duration of the contract."

Popularly speaking, this contract is called a partnership contract, which is a common guarantee method among adventurers. Violating the contract is usually regarded as a great disrespect to the gods, and those who break the contract will surely end up miserably.

The young man turned around and discussed with the others, then nodded.

"Very reasonable. We accept it."

The Thalansi took out a roll of blank scroll from his belt and wrote the most common adventurer's contract in four languages: the Common Tongue, Elvish, the Underground Common Tongue, and the Highland dialect.

"Speaking of which, sir, my name is Mira. And you?"

He quickly signed his name on the parchment, put it away, and then answered the bright - smiling young man with a raised corner of his mouth.

"You can call me Lann."

Three days later, new visitors arrived in the underground.
