Chapter 2 - CHAPTER 2 : Situationships, Hookups

As the evening drew to a close, Mia arrived at the apartment, looking cheerful and energetic. "Hey, girls! What's up?" she smiled, dropping her bag on the floor. "We're good, you arrived late," I pointed out, popping a chip into my mouth. "Yeah, there was hella traffic," she said with exhaustion, and plopped onto her bed.

Our apartment was a big room, big enough for three people to fit in with their things and three big beds, and the kitchen and bathroom on the other side. "I am starving, do you guys have any food here?" Mia asked. "There's food in the kitchen, just warm it up and eat," Sarah told her.

Mia went into the kitchen and came out with a plate of food, already eating while walking over to us. "Mia, you should sit before you start eating," Sarah reprimanded. Mia rolled her eyes but sat on the floor nonetheless. After eating, she came and sat with us. "What movie is this?" Mia asked, looking into Sarah's laptop. "The Exorcist," I replied.

Sarah looked between me and Mia, a curious expression on her face. "So, I heard you're chatting with Chris," she said. Mia looked at me, and I focused on the laptop and eating my chips, pretending not to hear whatever they were talking about. "Yeah, Zoey gave me his number," Mia replied.

"You guys still chatting?" Sarah asked again, casually. "A few hellos here and there," Mia replied. "I see," Sarah said, and an awkward silence followed for a while.

Until Sarah spoke up, "Anyway, I hooked up with someone this holiday." "Really!?" Mia and I asked at the same time, surprised. Now, I know it's normal for college students to hook up with someone, but Sarah is an exception. She had always been a model student, only had one boyfriend in high school, and never dated since. Always talking about her next sex partner being someone she likes and someone who likes her.

"Hook up!? YOU!?" Mia exclaimed, wide-eyed. "What do you mean by 'YOU'?, you think I can't hook up with somebody?" Sarah asked, defensively. Mia and I looked at each other, and I pursed my lips, not saying anything further. But trust Mia to say anything and everything. "Well, yeah! You always talk about love this, love that, we never thought you had it in you to just hook up."

"Well, who said I didn't like this guy?" Sarah asked, rolling her eyes. I looked at Sarah incredulously. "Girl, you know what hooking up means, right?" "Of course, I do, you sleep with someone once or twice," Sarah replied. "That's it?" "Is there supposed to be another meaning to it?" Sarah asked.

Mia took a deep breath. "You're right about the meaning of 'hookup,' but that's not all there is to it. When you hook up, you and the person involved know that you're just doing it for the body, pleasure, no feelings attached. It's more like friends with benefits, but in this case, you're not even friends, sometimes the people involved don't even keep in contact."

Mia explained to Sarah like she would to a child. Sarah could act like our mother in other things, but when it comes to love or anything concerning it, we're literally her guardians. "Oh, but we still keep in contact," Sarah said, looking confused. "Have you guys talked about dating, though?" Mia asked, now looking like a teacher trying to coach her student.

"Not necessarily, our conversations usually revolve only around sex," Sarah replied. "Do you like him?" I asked this time. Sarah looked between us, "I...think, I don't know, alright, he is so sweet when we see each other, so attentive to me when we're having sex and all..." "What about after sex?" Mia asked. "Not so much, he turns very distant," Sarah replied.

Mia and I looked at each other and took deep breaths, looking back at Sarah with pity. "Girl...you're in a situationship," Mia concluded. "Situationship?" Sarah asked. "Yep, a situationship is more like being just a sex partner, not a relationship nor a fling. He can call you over whenever he wants, but only for sexual purposes. The thing about situationships is that they only favor one party, the one who knows what they want and knows that it's only for the flesh. In this case, it's pretty clear that this guy has the upper hand in this," I explained.

"Exactly," Mia said, backing me up. Sarah looked like she had swallowed a bitter pill.

"And here I was, thinking we were getting to know each other," Sarah said, looking disappointed. Mia responded with a sarcastic comment, "I doubt your personality is in your vagina, though." I elbowed her, saying "Mia" in a warning tone. Mia's comment had been a bit too harsh,

"What!? Is yours in your vagina? I didn't know that," she said, her voice laced with sarcasm. Sarah suddenly sighed heavily, looking distressed.Mia immediately apologized, rubbing Sarah's back gently. "I didn't mean that, okay? I was just trying to make a point."

Sarah shook her head, feeling foolish. "That's not the point, I am so foolish," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. Mia and I quickly reassured her, trying to make her feel better. "No, you're not," Mia said. "You're just human," I added.

We hugged Sarah soothingly, trying to comfort her. After a moment, Mia asked, "What's the guy's name, though?" Sarah hesitated before responding, "JK... and he goes to this college, by the way." Our eyes widened in shock as we exchanged a look. "What!!!? JK, and he comes to this school!!?" I exclaimed. Mia's eyes were wide with surprise as well. "Did you just say JK?" she asked, her voice dragging out the question.

What are the odds.
