"Ahh... another day" Kenji lamented as his eyes peered to his window. The Sun beamed through and finally woke Kenji up. It was already 1pm, he got up sluggishly. His video game console still paused from last night's grind session. A faint yawn as the 23 year old slacker opens his kitchen cabinet. A single cup of ramen left. "Ohh great... guess I gotta make a run to the store today... Ugh"
Kenji hated going outside except for when he wanted to buy limited edition anime figures.
As he slurped up his ramen, someone rang his house phone. Kenji ignored it, already knowing who it might be. The voicemail machine went to speaker since he didn't pick up.
"Kenji... it's Dad". Kenji's eyes rolled over. "Listen son, I know it's been a while, and you're still figuring things out... but your mother and I talked... we think it's time you learn to take care of yourself and find a job...". Kenji's eyes widened a bit. "Nope... not happening" he thought. "And we decided we're not going to pay for your apartment anymore, so you're gonna have to figure it out on your own... sorry kiddo" and he hangs up. "What! No way they can just stop paying like that! Are they trying to KILL ME?" Kenji panicking. Kenji tries to pick up the phone and call his dad back. But to his dismay, his dad does not pick up. "Damn that old man!" Kenji shouted.
Kenji was flat out broke. His parents supported him fully until now. His apartment was nothing short of a pigsty. Trash everywhere, and left over food galore. He lived like a wild animal. His hair was in shambles and he always looked dirty. It wasn't always this way. Young Kenji was actually quite a cheerful and promising child. But all that seemed to changed drastically as he grew into his teens.
He delved back into his video games for a few hours before throwing on some clothes and setting out.
The Sun had just set and the warm Summer breeze grazed Kenji. Tsccch! Kenji sucked his cheeks as he remembered his father's earlier call. He walked towards his local train station and sat alone. He opened his wallet to find his last 5 Aurelian dollars. His face sunk, but this was nothing new. He blew his weekly allowance on collectables a few days prior. A small child and his mother walked by Kenji as he sat, the child looking questionably at Kenji, and the mother quickly leaded themselves away with disgust. I'm such a bum Kenji thought. He made his way to a convenience store a few stops away. This store was the only one that stocked his favorite ramen and he thought the cashier was quite cute, though she never looked directly at him.
With a single cup of ramen purchased in a plastic bag, he slowly walked down the street. He looked up at a billboard sign.
"CONTACT YOUR LOCAL I.B.T AGENT IF YOU SEE ANY SUSPICIOUS PSYCHIC ACTIVITY" along with the picture of a handsome young man around Kenji's age. "God, I can't stand those guys". The IBT, was the International Bureau of Telekinesis. In this world, around 1% of humans were born with special psychic powers. The IBT was founded by a mysterious figure only known only by the world as The Director. The IBT would govern all psychic matters across the world and have strong influence in many governments. Kenji's city New Aurelia, the capital of Aurel, would be no exception. The IBT was well respected here, and had even been involved in the local schools. Who'd want to be an Agent anyways Kenji scoffed. Although everybody else would have dreamed of becoming an IBT Agent, Kenji did not. He had read online somewhere that IBT Agents tend to go insane after too many years on the field, all conspiracy theories of course. In order to become an Agent, one had to be a psychic as well, which Kenji was not.
He made his way to the train stop back to home. Kenji sat on the bench thinking about how he would survive the next week. I am so screwed. Suddenly, the sound of school girls could be heard in the distance. Kenji thought he was alone since it was already dark but apparently not. He looked over at 3 pretty high school girls coming towards him.
"AHHH THAT MEAL WAS SOOOO GOOD" a tipsy high school proclaimed.
"I can't believe you convinced those creepy business men to buy us drinks Natsume!" another said.
The third girl laughed shyly. Kenji wanted to make himself invisible as he felt awkward around girls. He tucked his head in and looked at the floor. Soon they were in proximity to Kenji and the bench.
"Ohh I didn't realize anyone was sitting here" one of the girls said.
"Maybe we should find another bench" the shy one added.
"No... let's ask"
"Hey Mister!" the blonde tipsy girl barked at Kenji.
Kenji slowly brought his head up to answer, not looking them in the eye.
"He's kinda creepy Natsume, maybe we should-" the girl whispers in the blonde's ear. Kenji heard that.
"Don't you know you should let girls sit! That's what gentlemen do?" the blonde lectured.
Kenji tried mumbling something in response, he was already embarrassed. The blonde burst out laughing, and the two others joined. Kenji rises to leave the bench, but then the blonde grabs his bag of ramen.
"Hey! Give that back!" Kenji clearly.
"Hey June! Catch this" as the blonde throws the bag to the brown haired one. Kenji helplessly shuffled back and forth, while they throw around his dinner.
Then, as Kenji is running, he hears the faint sound of the train coming.
"Hey Laura, I don't think I passed it to you yet! Here catch!"
The third girl was a shorter girl with black hair. She seemed the more innocent of the bunch.
The brunette throws it over Kenji and to the black haired girl but then realized she over threw it.
The black haired girl jumps to compensate but ends up missing and falling awkwardly.
She trips and falls onto the train tracks. The laughter suddenly stops.
Oh shit! Kenji thought. The girl laid over the train tracks with a small stream of blood coming from here head, she had hit her head on one of the rails. The two other girls start to panic. The train appears in full view at the end of the station.
Fuck! Fuck! Fuck!
The two girls with despair in their faces "Do something mister!" as if they weren't bullying him moments ago. Kenji looks at the train and then at the girl, he figured he might have time to grab her and hoist her over to the two other girls.
"HURRY UP!" the blonde in tears. Kenji quickly jumps over to the girl. But then he realizes something terrible.
No... this can't be...
He was too weak to carry the high school girl.
"What! Can you not lift her mister?" the girls begin to cry hopelessly. Kenji tries to drag the unconscious girl further down the tracks. It's pointless he realizes. The train will not stop in time and both of them will die right here.
"Goddamn it!" Kenji yells as he feebly drags the girl. The train horn blares even louder. Kenji can see the conductor's face full of despair and shock. This is it, the train is about to strike them both.
STOP! STOP! STOP! "STOOOOOP" Kenji holds out his hand to the train. His memories all flooding his brain. Of when he was a child, a teen, a college student. His head felt as if it were about to burst.
Suddenly, he hears sharp metallic grinding. He looks up to the train covered in a strange translucent aura. His hand covered in the same aura. What the hell? And then the aura disappeared.
Did I just stop the train? No way... "Mister are you okay?!" the blonde shouted from the platform.
Kenji looks over to the platform, there is now a crowd of people rushing over to help.
He looks at his hand again and notices a small drop of blood. Kenji looked at his reflection in the front of the train, his nose was bleeding. He looks over again at the crowd, a mysterious tall coated figure stands in the crowd. He can't make out the face but he can see a wide smile, almost evil.
His vision blurs, the sounds of people rushing to him as he faints.
