Chapter 2 - Ch2

On the morning of their decision, Jenna sat across from her husband, Carlos, in their living room, the tension palpable.

"Carlos, we need to talk," she started, her voice trembling slightly.

He looked up from his phone, his expression immediately shifting from curiosity to suspicion. "What's going on?"

"I… I've been unfaithful," she admitted, her heart racing. "I'm pregnant, and it's not yours."

The silence that followed felt like an eternity, the air thick with unspoken words. Carlos's face turned red with rage. "Are you kidding me? Are you a fucking slut? You went and cheated on me and got knocked up?! By who?!"

"A-A...A student of mine..." She trembles.

"You knocked up by some kid?"

"Carlos, please—"

"A kid? You're a dumb old woman who preyed on a teenager! What the hell were you thinking?" His voice was loud and accusatory.

Jenna's heart sank as she struggled to meet his furious gaze. "I didn't plan for this to happen. It was a mistake."

"Right. A mistake. You ruined our marriage, and for what? A fling? I want a divorce. As soon as possible."

Jenna felt the tears prickling at her eyes but refused to let them fall. "Okay. If that's what you want, I won't fight you on it."

"Good," he snapped, standing up and storming away. The door slammed behind him, leaving Jenna alone with her thoughts.

Meanwhile, Ezra was grappling with his own fears. He sat across from his mother, Taylor, in their cozy kitchen, anxiety gnawing at him. "Mom, there's something I need to tell you," he started, his voice unsteady.

Taylor paused, her brow furrowing. "What is it, Ezra? You look like you've seen a ghost."

He took a deep breath, his heart racing. "I got my professor pregnant."

Her expression shifted, a mix of shock and anger washing over her. "What were you thinking? She's married, Ezra! You can't just—"

"Mom, please!" he interjected, feeling the heat of her disappointment. "I know it was a mistake. I'm scared. I didn't want any of this to happen."

Taylor's demeanor softened as she saw the genuine fear in her son's eyes. She reached across the table, placing her hand on his. "Okay, okay. We'll figure this out. I'm upset, yes, but you're my son, and I want to help you through this. We'll make sure everything will be okay."

Ezra nodded, feeling a wave of relief wash over him. "Thanks, Mom. I just didn't know how to tell you."

After their conversation, they decided it was time to face the university board. The atmosphere in the meeting room was tense as Jenna and Ezra sat before the panel, their hearts pounding. They explained everything, their voices shaky but resolute. Ezra's hands clenched tightly on the table, but he felt Jenna's reassuring squeeze beside him.

To their astonishment, the board deliberated and ultimately decided not to fire Jenna. "We believe in second chances," the chairperson said, her tone sympathetic. "You will need to take a leave of absence to focus on your personal matters, but we want to support you in any way we can."

———

Two months had passed since the tumultuous revelations that had changed the course of Jenna and Ezra's lives. The relationship that had once been a scandalous secret, and now, almost the entire university was aware of their connection. Surprisingly, they hadn't faced any significant problems; their bond was still in its early stages, brimming with hope and uncertainty.

Jenna had made the difficult decision to keep the baby, a choice that weighed heavily on her mind, especially at the age of 49—an age when most women were no longer thinking about childbirth. She often expressed her worries to Ezra, voicing her fears about the risks and challenges of pregnancy at her age. Yet, in moments of quiet reassurance, Ezra would take her hands in his and promise her that everything would be alright, even as he wrestled with his own anxieties.

As they settled into their new lives, Jenna had gotten to know Taylor, Ezra's mother. Though Taylor was outwardly polite, both Jenna and Ezra could sense her judgment lurking beneath the surface. Taylor's carefully curated smiles and polite conversation did little to mask her skepticism about their unconventional relationship.

The divorce with Carlos had been settled relatively quickly, but with the house being his, Jenna found herself in a precarious situation. Although she could have fought for the property, she chose not to, leaving her without a home. Thankfully, Taylor, albeit reluctantly, had offered Jenna a room in her house, allowing her to stay with both her and Ezra. It was a new arrangement, and although Jenna still felt awkward even after a month of living together, she was grateful for the safety net.

It was a Saturday, a weekend day that had arrived with a sense of unease for Jenna. She found herself lost in thoughts again worrying. Ezra, sensing her distress, had decided to whisk her away on an adventure. He had been working part-time as an admissions assistant at the university, saving up some money for a surprise outing.

As they sat in his Toyota Corolla, cruising down the highway, the sun streamed through the windows, casting a warm glow across the interior. Jenna fidgeted in her seat, glancing over at Ezra, who was focused on the road ahead.

"Where are we going?" she asked, her voice tinged with curiosity.

"It's a surprise," he replied, a playful grin dancing on his lips.

She raised an eyebrow, a mixture of excitement and skepticism coloring her expression. "You know I'm not great with surprises, right?"

"Just trust me," he said, stealing a glance at her, his heart racing slightly. Internally, he felt a flutter of nerves. What if she didn't like where he was taking her? What if his attempt to cheer her up fell flat? The thought gnawed at him, but he pushed it aside.

As they continued down the highway, Jenna's excitement began to mount. She leaned back in her seat, allowing herself to feel a sense of anticipation. "Are we there yet?" she teased, her laughter infectious.

"Not yet! Just a little further," Ezra replied, keeping his eyes on the road while stealing glances at her radiant smile.

When they finally arrived at their destination, Jenna's eyes widened in disbelief. The coastal town stretched out before them, with the glistening ocean meeting the horizon. A vibrant sign announced, "Whale Watching Tours."

"Whale watching?" she exclaimed, her voice filled with surprise and joy. "You brought me whale watching?"

Ezra nodded, a proud smile breaking across his face. "I thought it would be fun. And it's something you'll always remember."

As they boarded the boat, Jenna's excitement was palpable. She stood at the edge, her eyes sparkling with wonder as the vessel pulled away from the dock. The salty breeze whipped through her hair, and she laughed, feeling alive in a way she hadn't in a long time.

As they cruised through the ocean, the crew shared fascinating facts about the whales. Jenna listened intently, her worries momentarily forgotten as she immersed herself in the beauty surrounding them.

"Look!" Ezra shouted, pointing to a spout of water erupting from the ocean's surface. Jenna turned just in time to see a magnificent humpback whale breach the water, its massive body glistening under the sun. She gasped, her eyes wide with awe.

"Did you see that?" she exclaimed.

Ezra couldn't help but smile as he watched her. In that moment, she was radiant—her laughter infectious, her joy illuminating the space around them. To him, she was the most beautiful woman he had ever been with. He had shut down his classmates' snide comments about her age and appearance swiftly, defending her with conviction.

As the whale watching tour continued, she leaned into him, her eyes glistening with excitement as they spotted more whales surfacing. "Thank you for bringing me here," Jenna said, her voice filled with gratitude, and kissed his cheek.

"I'm just glad you're enjoying it," he replied, feeling a warmth spread through him.
