Chapter 3 - Chapter 3 The Binding

THE HORROR WORLD

The Binding

The flickering candlelight painted the church walls with trembling shadows, but inside, there was an uneasy calm. Mira's breath came in short, shallow bursts as she gripped the edge of the wooden pew. The oppressive presence of the shadows outside lingered like a heavy weight on her chest.

Emma knelt before the altar, murmuring prayers under her breath. The church was old, its stone walls cracked and worn, but it felt sturdy—like it had withstood worse horrors than the one that now stalked them.

"They won't come in here," Emma said, her voice barely above a whisper. "The church is consecrated ground. It's the only place they can't touch."

Mira wiped sweat from her brow, her hands trembling. "But they'll wait, won't they? They'll wait for us to leave."

Emma nodded, her face pale. "They're patient. They always are."

Mira leaned back, her mind racing. "There has to be a way to stop them. Something that can break their hold."

Emma hesitated, her gaze falling to the floor. "There's one thing," she said finally, her voice filled with reluctance. "But it's dangerous. And no one has ever succeeded."

Mira leaned forward, desperation in her eyes. "Tell me. I'll do whatever it takes."

Emma looked up at her, her expression grave. "There's an old ritual—something my grandmother told me about. It's called The Binding. It's said to trap the shadows and sever their connection to this world."

Mira's heart leapt. "How does it work?"

Emma stood and began pacing. "You'll need three things: an anchor, a relic, and a sacrifice."

Mira frowned. "What do you mean by an anchor?"

"An anchor is something that ties the shadows to this world. It could be an object, a place, or even a person," Emma explained. "In this case, it's the mansion. That's where their power is strongest."

"And the relic?"

Emma hesitated. "A relic is an object of pure energy, something that can repel the shadows long enough for the ritual to work. The only thing we have close to that is the Saint's Cross, kept in the village shrine. It hasn't been touched in decades."

Mira swallowed hard. "And the sacrifice?"

Emma's face darkened. "The ritual requires a life—something to trade with the shadows for their departure."

Mira's stomach churned. "A life? You mean… someone has to die?"

Emma nodded solemnly. "It's the only way. The shadows won't leave without taking something in return. That's the price."

Mira stood, her mind spinning. She thought of the mansion, of the shadows that had reached for her, their whispers crawling into her ears like poison. She couldn't live with this fear. But the idea of sacrificing someone…

"Is there no other way?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Emma shook her head. "Not that I know of. The ritual has been attempted before, but no one has ever returned from the mansion to tell the tale."

The heavy silence was broken by the faint sound of whispers outside the church. Mira glanced toward the door, her chest tightening.

"They're waiting," Emma said. "They won't stop until they have you."

Mira clenched her fists, determination hardening in her chest. "Then I'll do it. I'll perform the ritual."

Emma's eyes widened. "You don't even know if it will work. You'll be walking straight into their trap."

"I don't care," Mira said. "I can't keep running. If there's even a chance to stop them, I have to try."

Emma hesitated, then nodded. "If you're sure, we need to move quickly. The longer we wait, the stronger they'll become."

She retrieved an old map from the back of the church, spreading it across a pew. It showed the village and the surrounding forest, with the mansion marked as a dark blot at the edge of Blackwood Hollow.

"We'll need to go to the shrine first," Emma said, pointing to a small building near the edge of the map. "That's where the Saint's Cross is kept. Then we'll head to the mansion."

Mira nodded, her
