Chapter 1 - chapter 1

Woman on a call: "Yes, I'm at work right now, but I can come in the next 30 minutes. Hope everything is alright with Farha?" "Ok, I'll be there, I promise." She hung up the call and went straight to her boss's office to inform him that her attention was needed at her daughter's school, and she needed to go.

"Drive safely, Zia," said the boss, and she nodded her head, indicating "ok."

The woman rushed down to grab her bag and keys, heading straight to the elevator to go down to the parking lot. "Good morning, ma'am," said the security guard, opening the door for her to leave the office after getting off the lift.

As she entered her car, she dialed her husband's number. "I was called to Farha's school; I have no idea... I'm rushing there right now... ok... don't worry, I'll call you, I promise," Zia said, hanging up on her husband.

As soon as she reached the school, she went straight to the principal's office and asked, "Hope everything is alright, Mrs. Denice?" "No," said Mrs. Denice, gesturing for her to have a seat.

"Farha is doing terribly bad at her academics; she no longer does assignments or participates actively in class. She's always hanging around boys, playing ball, and scaling fences to leave school during class hours. We tried our best, which you know, because we called for your attention several times in the school. She's a bright child; we know that for a fact, but she gets easily influenced. So, please, Mrs. Moses," said the principal, holding Zia's hand, "we want to rusticate her from our school because her results are not showing any sign of improvement. We hope you understand."

Zia sighed heavily and said, "No, no, Mrs. Denice, please don't send her out of this school, please. She's brilliant; you know that, right? I promise to put her through; I've just been busy a lot with work, and her dad is out of town, but please give me one more chance. I promise to set everything right."

Mrs. Denice tried to talk again, but the mother cut her off by reminding her how Farha grew up in front of her. "You know Farha since she was in Basic 1; she started this school as a 5-year-old. She was a smart child and attended many competitions, making the school proud. She's still the face of the school after 10 years of studying here. For that, she deserves a second chance, please. I'm begging you, Mrs. Denice. I promise she's going to have a comeback in her academics. I just need a week to put her through, please."

The principal agreed, but she wanted her to know about something again. "Farha has a boyfriend, and I think that's the number one priority she has right now."

"Huh...?" said Zia.

The principal smiled and said, "One last chance, Mrs. Moses, because we're one family now and exam's in two weeks,I'm giving Farha one last chance. Please ensure she comes back as bright as she was before."

"Thank you," said Zia, shaking the principal's hand and leaving the office to find Farha.

As soon as she went to Farha's class, Farha was missing. She decided to head to the school surroundings, checking to see where Farha would be at that period of classes. As she was passing, she heard laughs... "Hahahahah... no, I don't want to go to a different school as you. I really want us to attend the same university," said Farha while holding her boyfriend's hand.

"Don't worry; I'll talk to my parents to see if they'll agree to get me admission in geneva( Switzerland)," said Moh, Farha's boyfriend. "But, Farha, it might be difficult to convince my parents because my dad really wanted me to go to UK, as you know….my brother's there already" he added…." It will be hard for him to agree but not for you. You can convince your parents faster than mine. Just in case I couldn't convince my dad, you should talk to your own dad to get you to my university. After all, he does everything you say. You're the apple of his eyes, remember?"

Giggling and laughing together, they hugged each other. Just as Farha raised her head up, she saw her mom looking at her with tears filled up her eyes. Farha immediately pushed the boy aside... "M... Mo... Mom," she stammered.

The mother turned and walked away, but Farha followed her, running, trying to explain the situation. "Get your bag; we're going home," said Zia.

In the car, there was absolute quiet as Zia drove. She didn't talk to Farha, and Farha was too embarrassed and scared of her mom to speak. As she opened the door to the house, her phone rang, and it was her husband calling. She picked up and went straight to her room, explaining the situation she had encountered at the school. Farha's dad was trying to calm her down, comforting her while Zia was crying, asking where she had gone wrong with her parenting.

But Farha's dad knew how to comfort his wife, and in no time, Zia was fine. However, she wasn't ready to talk to Farha just yet, so she turned off her phone and slept off. Farha's phone rang; it was her dad calling. Farha was skeptical about picking up, not because she was scared of her dad, but because she was embarrassed, and she knew how much her dad couldn't withstand his wife's tears.

She mustered up the courage to pick up her dad's call. "He... hello, Dad," said Farha. There was absolute silence in the room. "I'm deeply sorry, Dad," said Farha, tears rolling down her eyes.

"Farha... Farha, you shouldn't have made your mom cry. You really did cross the lines today... Why does it have to be you all the time? Your sister is also growing up, is this what you want her to be doing? Leaving her Islamic learnings just to be with a random boy at such a young age? Is this the footsteps you're setting for her?…... Is this what you want us to go through all the time, Farha?" Farha immediately said, "No, Daddy," but her father continued, saying, "I'm disappointed in you today... not because of your academic performance, but because you have forgotten the values we instilled in you for 15 years because of a random guy you met in less than 24 months."

Farha cried, shouting, "I'm very sorry, Daddy! Please give me one more chance, please, Daddy!" But he hung up the phone. Farha lay on the floor, crying her eyes out for hours.

Faiha who happened to be farha's junior's sister and Zia's second daughter came back from school and went straight to see her mom in the room as she heard to news from school. She saw her mom cried herself to sleep and went to cover her up with a blanket. She closed the door and went straight to her sister's room. She saw her sister lying on the floor with tears rolling down her eyes. She took the blanket from the bed and went to her sister's room to cover her up.

As she covered her sister, she asked, "Farha, are you okay?" Farha nodded, indicating "no," while she hugged Faiha and was crying seriously. Faiha joined her, crying as well, saying she had heard what happened from other students, and the news was going around their school. She hugged Farha tightly, ensuring her not to worry, that it would pass, and their mom just needed some time off. "She's going to be fine; don't worry," said Faiha, trying to make her sister feel better.

"I've never seen disappointment in mummy's eyes until today faiha" said farha:the look in her eyes was terrifying" Farha added;Faiha wiping her sisters eyes telling her "is ok boo...(the bet name Faiha calls Farha) it's going to be fine" Faiha added;

Time pass, and it was time for dinner. Zia called Faiha on the phone, telling her to call her sister down for dinner. The two girls walked down the stairs, holding each other's hands, because Farha was scared of facing her mom. But Faiha held her hand tightly, dragging her down the stairs to the dining room, where their mom was setting the plates.

As they were eating, there was absolute silence. Then Zia asked Faiha, "How's your exam coming up?" "It's in two weeks, Mom. We're studying hard; don't worry, I'll definitely come first this year," she smiled, looking at her mom, and the mom smiled at her too.

The mom didn't talk to Farha and picked up her plate to the kitchen. She took her cup of coffee and went to the study to finish the work she had left early from the office that morning. Farha and Faiha were at the dining table, discussing how to appease their mom. Faiha was giving different ideas, and Farha froze, asking, "Are you sure you're 12 or I'm 12? Because it feels like you're 15 and I'm 12." They both laughed and went to their mom's study for a talk.

As they knocked on the door, the mother shouted, "Come in," with a faint voice from behind the door. They both walked in to find their mom on the phone with her boss, telling him she wanted a few days off due to personal reasons. She said to them, "Sit down," indicating chairs for them to sit on. They sat and waited for her to finish her work and come to sit with them to hear what they had to say.

Farha started by kneeling down on the floor to beg her mom. Zia immediately went to Farha to stand her up. Farha started crying, and Zia hugged her ensuring her is not a big deal, it's okay. "I promise I didn't mean to make you cry, Mummy... please forgive me, Mum... I promise not to talk to any boy again, just forgive me this once, please," said Farha. Zia hugged Farha and said, "Don't worry, baby girl, it's alright, I promise. Just stop crying, common girl, stop crying." While Faiha was aside, tearing up too, the mother looked at her and said, "Come here, girl, you too don't cry. Don't worry, it's alright." Faiha came and hugged her mom too. They all hugged and cried together.

After a while, the mother was seated with her two daughters when Farha asked, "Why didn't you say anything, Mom, when you saw us under the tree? You just stood there and were looking." The mother sniffed her nose and said, "I was reminded of my childhood when I saw you there, Farha."

Faiha rushed to the mother and asked, "You had a boyfriend before?" The mother smiled and looked at her kids, saying, "Farha, I wasn't crying because of the situation or your school performance. Whatever the principal said about you, I know is something we just need to sit and talk about. But when I saw you under the tree with that boy gaslighting you about coming to his own school because he can't talk to his parents, and you agreed so easily... it reminded me of myself 17 years back when I gave up everything for a boy I loved with all my heart too."

Farha immediately wiped away her tears and crawled to the mother, saying, "Say again..." Zia sighed and continued, "Seventeen years ago, I got married to your dad as a punishment for loving a boy who left me in a car accident at 2:00 a.m. in the morning. My parents were so mad that they married me off to your dad, and I was barely an adult at that time."

Farha said, "I can't imagine." While Faiha ran to the kitchen to get a basket of snacks and drinks, she came back in a rush, telling the mother, "We need details of your adventurous childhood, Mother... please, and please don't leave anything out. We need details." Clinging to her mom while eating popcorn for the gist, the mother said, "Hold on tight, guys. It's going to be a long night today."
