The fluorescent lights of Grayson High buzzed, casting an eerie glow on the panicked faces.
It wasn't the usual teenage chaos, the usual petty squabbles and whispered crushes. Today, there was a different kind of energy, a low hum of fear that vibrated through the air.
Jason, perched on the edge of his usual seat in the back of the classroom, felt it too. It wasn't fear for himself, not exactly. It was a detached curiosity, like watching a car crash in slow motion.
"Mr. Henderson," Ms. Johnson's voice, usually firm, trembled, "I think… I think something is wrong with Billy."
Billy, the star quarterback, lay sprawled on the floor, his eyes rolling back in his head. A low groan escaped his lips, followed by a chilling, guttural snarl. At that moment it appeared as if Billy had a case of seizure. Ms. Johnson the head of infirmary decided to ask Mr. Henderson to help move Billy and bring him to the infirmary.
"Mr. Henderson, we should be helping this kids cause we are the adults and should be responsible. Hurry! Help me bring him to the infirmary" Said Ms. Johnson.
While the crowd was clueless of what happened to Billy. Suddenly he snapped and became silent. No movement was shown as if he was dead. Ms. Johnson immediately went to Billy and performed CPR to help but nothing happened. She rushed Mr. Henderson to help do compressions as she is checking Billy's pulse.
Ms. Johnson then stopped Mr. Henderson and said "We are too late to save him. I don't feel his pulse." The class began to be quiet and sadness filled the air. Ms. Johnson took out her phone and was trying to let Billy's parents know about this. It appears that the phone call didn't come through. So she decided to call again later.
After that the two teachers were discussing of what to do. They were very concerned and tried to find out what had caused Billy to suddenly had seizures.
The silence broke as one of the female student screamed eerily. Everyone turned their heads to see why the student was screaming. There they saw Billy awake and was doing something to Jennifer. Jennifer and Billy was covered in blood as the their two bodies were attached to each other seemed as if they were hugging each other. Mr. Henderson was angry at what Billy was doing in class as it seems inappropriate.
He then went to Billy and pushed him away from Jennifer. Jennifer was crying for help with her last breath and Mr. Henderson saw that her head was almost detached from her body. He was shocked then looked backbat Billy.
Billy jumped on Mr. Henderson to attack but Mr. Henderson kicked Billy away from him. Billy now was near another student and began to bite off the student's hand. A large chunk of the student's hands were eaten by Billy and everyone began to feel scared.
Panic then erupted as Billy began to attack every student in the class. Students screamed, chairs scraped against the floor, the air thick with the smell of fear and something else, something metallic and faintly sweet.
Jason, unnoticed as always, watched the chaos unfold. He saw the bullies, the ones who had tormented him for years – Mark, the hulking jock, and his cronies, their faces contorted in terror, their bravado shattered as they were trying to run from Billy and the other students who were bitten by him.
He saw Sarah, the head cheerleader, her perfectly sculpted face contorted in a mask of horror, her carefully constructed facade crumbling. She was standing there as she see her friends were also changing like Billy. In the midst of the pandemonium, he felt a strange sense of detachment, a chilling sense of premonition.
He had a fleeting vision – a grotesque, rotting figure, its eyes burning with an unnatural light, looming over him. He realised now that he no longer had to see his bullies coming to attack him as they were being eaten alive by Billy.
He smiled and began to feel a chill in the back of his head. He is now free and does not have to face the same boring day of being bullied by the big guys as he watched them ran in terror. He sat there and showed no fear of what was happening at the moment.
Ms. Johnson was there and hold Jason's hand to get out of the classroom along with the students who were not bitten. She rushed to open the door and fear strucked her as they left the room.
