Chereads / Nora's Love / Chapter 15 - Test

Chapter 15 - Test

It's three months since Adrian left for Johannesburg, and although Nora had adjusted to the pattern of their long-distance relationship, cracks were beginning to form. What started as daily phone calls had trickled into sporadic messages and rushed conversations. Both of them were busy, Nora with her high-profile architecture project and Adrian with his grueling studio schedule.

Still, they both tried. At least, that's what Nora told herself every time she stared at her phone, waiting for a reply to a message she'd sent hours earlier.

This evening, the familiar weight of silence filled her apartment as she sat by the window, staring out at the city lights. It was almost 10 p.m., and Adrian hadn't called as promised. She knew he was juggling a lot, but the distance was starting to feel like more than just physical miles.

Her phone buzzed suddenly, and she snatched it up, her heart leaping. But it wasn't Adrian it was Claire.

Claire: You free tomorrow night? Dinner's on me.

Nora sighed, her initial disappointment fading. Claire's company was always a welcome distraction, and she could use one.

Nora: Free and starving. See you at 7.

Claire: Perfect. Don't flake, okay?

Nora smiled faintly, typing a quick reply before setting the phone down. She couldn't shake the sinking feeling in her chest, though. Adrian's absence felt heavier tonight, and for the first time, she wondered if their love was strong enough to withstand the growing gaps between them.

The next evening, Nora met Claire at a cozy Italian bistro downtown. The warm glow of candles and the aroma of fresh pasta filled the air, providing a temporary escape from her worries.

Claire greeted her with a tight hug, her curly hair bouncing as she pulled away. "You look like you need a good meal and a stiff drink," she said, leading Nora to their table.

Nora chuckled weakly. "Is it that obvious?"

"Only to me," Claire replied, waving down the waiter. "You've had that distant look for weeks now. What's going on?"

Nora hesitated, running her fingers along the edge of her water glass. "It's Adrian," she admitted. "Things aren't bad, exactly. But they're not great either."

Claire nodded knowingly. "Long-distance relationships are tough, Nora. You're both in different worlds right now, and it's easy to drift apart if you're not careful."

"I know," Nora said, her voice tinged with frustration. "But I don't know what else to do. I send messages, and I try to stay involved in his life, but it feels like I'm always the one reaching out. And when we do talk, it's rushed or interrupted. I feel like I'm losing him."

Claire reached across the table, squeezing Nora's hand. "Have you told him how you feel?"

"Not completely," Nora admitted. "I don't want to seem needy or make him feel guilty. He's already under so much pressure with his music."

"Nora, being honest about your feelings doesn't make you needy. It makes you human," Claire said firmly. "If this relationship matters to both of you, you need to communicate. Otherwise, those gaps you're feeling will only get bigger."

Nora nodded slowly, her mind racing. Claire was right she couldn't keep bottling up her emotions. If she and Adrian were going to make this work, they needed to confront the challenges head-on.

That night, Nora sat on her couch, staring at her phone. Her conversation with Claire replayed in her mind as she debated whether to call Adrian. After a moment's hesitation, she dialed his number.

It rang several times before he picked up, his voice sounding tired but warm. "Hey, Nora. I was just about to call you."

"Hi," she said, her heart clenching at the sound of his voice. "How's everything going?"

"Busy," Adrian admitted. "The studio sessions have been intense, and I've been meeting with some producers. It's exciting but exhausting."

"I'm glad things are going well," Nora said sincerely. "But I wanted to talk to you about something."

"Of course," he said, his tone softening. "What's on your mind?"

She hesitated, then took a deep breath. "I feel like we're drifting apart, Adrian. I know you're busy, and I don't want to add to your stress, but it's been hard. I miss you, and sometimes it feels like we're barely holding on."

There was a long pause on the other end, and for a moment, Nora feared she'd said too much.

"I miss you too, Nora," Adrian said finally, his voice laced with guilt. "And you're right I haven't been as present as I should be. I didn't realize how much it was affecting you."

"It's affecting both of us," she said gently. "I just don't want us to lose what we have."

"We won't," Adrian said firmly. "I promise, Nora. I'll do better. We'll figure out a way to make this work."

His reassurance eased some of her fears, though the uncertainty lingered. They ended the call on a positive note, but Nora couldn't shake the feeling that their relationship was still on shaky ground.

In the weeks that followed, Adrian made a noticeable effort to be more present. He sent her longer messages, shared snippets of his day, and even surprised her with a handwritten letter that arrived in the mail one afternoon.

Nora smiled as she read his words, the familiar warmth of his humor and tenderness filling her heart.

"Nora," the letter began, "I know I haven't been the best at staying connected, but I want you to know how much you mean to me. Every step I take here, every note I play, I think about you. This isn't easy, but I believe in us. I hope you do too."

Tears pricked at her eyes as she finished reading, and for the first time in weeks, she felt a sense of hope. Adrian's letter was a reminder that despite the distance and challenges, their love was still worth fighting for.

One Friday evening, Nora received an unexpected call from Adrian.

"Hey," he said, his voice buzzing with excitement. "I have some good news."

"What's going on?" she asked, smiling at his enthusiasm.

"I've been invited to perform at a showcase here in Johannesburg," he said. "It's a big deal producers, talent scouts, the works. But the best part is, they're flying in a few guests for the event. And I want you to be one of them."

Nora's heart skipped a beat. "You want me to come to Johannesburg?"

"Yes," Adrian said, his tone eager. "I know it's short notice, but I can't imagine doing this without you there. What do you think?"

She hesitated, the idea of leaving her routine both thrilling and daunting. But as she thought about Adrian's excitement and the opportunity to finally see him again, her decision became clear.

"I'll be there," she said, her voice firm.

"Really?" Adrian asked, relief and joy evident in his tone.

"Really," she confirmed. "I wouldn't miss it for the world."

As they ended the call, Nora felt a renewed sense of purpose. For the first time in months, the distance between them didn't feel so insurmountable. Their love had faced its share of tests, but this moment reminded her why they were worth fighting for.

The journey to Johannesburg would be a leap, but Nora was ready. Love, she realized, wasn't about avoiding risks it was about embracing them, no matter how uncertain the outcome.
