Chapter 21 - The Gathering Depths

The deep blue of Aquoris shifted into a realm of twilight as Thalina swam along the outer edge of the coral gardens. Here, the vibrant hues faded into darker blues and muted purples, and the gentle current whispered secrets that only the brave or the curious would dare to heed. Tonight, driven by a mix of wonder and a mounting urgency, Thalina ventures further than ever. The water near the surface was calmer than the shifting currents below, where the world above met in a fragile balance. She hovered just beneath the waves, her dark hair floating around her like strands of midnight. She lingered just beneath the waves, her sleek form blending with the shadow cast by the towering cliffs above.

In the distance, past the jagged cliffs rising from the water, loomed Blackstone keep.

It stood like a phantom against the night sky, its spires cutting into the heavens like skeletal fingers. The human fortress had long been a source of whispered warnings among the merfolk, a place of old fears and grim legend, but only those old enough heard of these legends. But to Thalina, it was something else entirely. It was a mystery she could not ignore. She edged closer, her body moving effortlessly with the tide. From here, she could see the lights within the keep-warm, flickering glows that hinted at life within its walls. Who lived there? What did they do in their grand stone halls? What did it feel like to walk on land? But as Thalina peered through the water's veil, the air above called to her with its strange, shifting light. Her heart pounded with exhilaration and unease.

"Thalina."

A voice cut through the silence of the deep. She turned swiftly, her heart stuttering. Neris hovered a short distance away, arms crossed, his expression dark. His violet eyes, always sharp, glowed faintly in the dim water. "You shouldn't be here," he warned. "And neither should you," she countered, though her usual playfulness felt forced. Neris cast a wary glance at Blackstone keep."You're too reckless. If the elders knew-"

"They don't," she said quickly ."And neither do you." A muscle twitched. '' This isn't a game Thalina. You don't know what lurks in the human world." Thalina did not answer right away; she should have turned back to him. She should have let the warning settle into her bones. But something held her there, something deeper than mere curiosity. Then, the ocean trembled.

It was subtle at first- a shift in the current, a whisper of something vast moving below. The deep pulsated, sending a strange vibration through the water, like a heartbeat from the ocean floor. Thalina and Neris froze."You felt it that?" she whispered. Neris nodded stiffly."we need to go." But Thalina hesitated. For a brief moment, she thought she saw movement in the base of the cliffs-a flicker of something pale beneath the waves.

A trick of light?

Or something watching?

She didn't get the chance to find out.

Neris grabbed her wrist."Now."Reluctantly, she let him pull her away, though her gaze lingered on the towering keep as they swarm back to the safety of the depth.

Far below, in the heart of Aquarius, the elders gathered in a hidden chamber where no curious ears could listen. The water here was thick with secrecy, its silence heavy with unspoken fear. Their bioluminescent flickered dimly, a reflection of their unease. Marina stood among them, her usually composed expression tight with worry. She had lived long enough to recognize when the ocean itself whispered warnings- and. Lately, it had been restless."The disappearing continues," one elder murmured, his aged voice like a tide retreating over broken shells."Another one was taken three nights past."Murmurs of dismay rippled through the gathering. Marian exhaled slowly. The rumors had been growing stories of faint cries drifting through the currents, of strange disturbances in the abyss.

"They do not return," another elder said, his silver fins catching the dim glow of the chamber's coral walls. "And that tells us all we need to know."Marina's fingers clenched at her sides. The human had always been a threat to their kind, but this was different. This was not a random fisherman's net or an accidental Entanglement. This was deliberate. "This cannot go unanswered," an elder said firmly."We have been silent for too long." Another elder, her voice quieter but no less firm, replied, "And what do you propose? That we raise from the depth and declare war? That we reveal our existence after centuries of secrecy?"Tension thickened like the crushing weight of the ocean itself.

"The balance is shifting," Marina said at last."And I fear whatever is happening.... it's only the beginning."Silence settled over them like silt falling through water.

And then another pulse.

A ripple that none of them could ignore.

The ocean trembled once more.

Above them, far from the elder's chamber, Thalina drifted in her chamber, unable to sleep, the memory of Blackstone still burning behind her eyes. She did not know that, at that very moment, her fate was already set in motion.
