Chapter 34 - Chapter 33

THE BATTLE FOR THE HEARTSTONE

Amara and Lysander raced through the Abyss, the heavy air clinging to them like a shroud. Behind them, faint bursts of light and sound echoed—the clash of Selene's magic against the celestial hunters.

Amara's chest burned with guilt and fear. "We can't just leave her!"

"We don't have a choice," Lysander said, his tone grim. "She made her decision. If we go back now, we'll all die."

Amara clenched the Heartstone in her fist, its pulsing energy feeling like a betrayal. It was supposed to be their salvation, yet it had only brought destruction.

"Where are we even going?" she demanded, her voice shaking.

"To the Spire," Lysander replied. "It's the only place we can make a stand. If the Heartstone has any chance of working, it'll be there."

Amara's mind raced. The Spire—a legendary place said to be a nexus of power in the Abyss. But it was also treacherous, its energy capable of destroying anyone unworthy.

Hours later, they arrived at the base of the Spire. The towering structure loomed above them, its jagged edges glowing faintly with an otherworldly light. The air crackled with energy, and Amara felt the Heartstone resonate with it, as if recognizing its purpose.

"This is it," Lysander said, his voice low. "Once we activate the Heartstone here, it will either weaken the curse or destroy us both."

Amara swallowed hard, the weight of their mission pressing down on her. "What do we have to do?"

Lysander stepped forward, his chains coiling tightly around his arms. "Place the Heartstone on the altar at the top. But be prepared—the celestials won't let us do this without a fight."

As they climbed the Spire, a deafening roar echoed through the Abyss. Golden light erupted from the fog, and the celestial hunters emerged, their weapons drawn and their wings glowing with an ethereal brilliance.

"Keep moving!" Lysander shouted, pushing Amara forward.

The celestials struck without hesitation, their blades slicing through the air. Lysander's chains lashed out in response, dark tendrils of energy clashing against radiant light. The battle was chaotic, the Spire trembling under the weight of their powers.

Amara gripped the Heartstone tightly, her mind racing. She could feel its energy building, but it was wild and unpredictable. She needed to get to the altar, but every step was a struggle.

One of the celestials lunged at her, their blade aiming for her heart. Amara screamed, raising her hand instinctively. A burst of light erupted from her palm, throwing the celestial backward.

"Amara, go!" Lysander yelled, his chains wrapping around another celestial and slamming them into the ground.

Amara nodded, determination surging through her. She broke into a sprint, dodging blasts of energy as she climbed higher.

At the top of the Spire, Amara found the altar—a smooth, circular platform glowing with faint runes. The Heartstone pulsed violently in her hand, its energy threatening to overwhelm her.

She placed it on the altar, and the runes flared to life, casting the entire Spire in a blinding light. The ground trembled, and a surge of power shot through Amara, forcing her to her knees.

The celestials appeared moments later, their leader stepping forward with a triumphant smirk.

"You think you can control the Heartstone?" he sneered. "It's not meant for mortals like you."

Lysander appeared behind him, bloodied but defiant. "Stay away from her."

The celestial turned, raising his weapon, but Lysander struck first. His chains wrapped around the celestial's arm, pulling him off balance.

"Amara, now!" Lysander shouted.

Amara closed her eyes, focusing on the Heartstone. She could feel its energy coursing through her, chaotic and unyielding. She reached deep within herself, summoning every ounce of strength she had.

The Heartstone responded, its light exploding outward in a wave of pure energy. The celestials screamed as the force threw them backward, their radiant forms flickering.

Lysander fell to his knees, his chains retracting as the energy overwhelmed him. "Amara, stop!" he shouted, his voice barely audible over the deafening roar.

But Amara couldn't stop. The Heartstone's power consumed her, filling every corner of her being. She felt her memories, her fears, her very essence unraveling as the energy surged through her.

With a final burst of light, the Heartstone shattered, its pieces scattering into the void. The celestials disappeared, their forms dissolving into nothingness.

Amara collapsed, her body trembling as the last remnants of the Heartstone's power faded. Lysander crawled to her side, his silver eyes wide with fear.

"Amara," he whispered, cradling her face in his hands. "Amara, stay with me."

She opened her eyes, her vision blurred. "Did we…win?"

Lysander's expression was unreadable, his chains rattling softly. "We survived. That's enough for now."
