Chapter 7 - INTO THE SHADOWS

The floodlights hummed softly, their white glow illuminating the lunar surface in stark contrast to the oppressive blackness just beyond. Alvarez, Rae, and Eli stood in the control room, tension thick in the air. The external cameras displayed the shadows lingering at the edge of the light, restless but contained—for now.

"We need to figure out where they're tethered," Eli said, breaking the silence. His voice wavered, but determination shone in his eyes. "If we understand the source, we might have a way to stop them."

Alvarez leaned against the console, his arm still throbbing from the shadow's attack. "Tethered or not, those things are adapting. If we wait too long, they'll figure out a way past the lights."

Rae crossed her arms, glancing between the screen and her team. "So, what's the plan? We can't just waltz out there with a flashlight and hope for the best."

Eli tapped on the console, pulling up a map of the base and its surroundings. "There's an abandoned research outpost about half a kilometer from here. It's marked as inactive, but it's close to where the shadows seem to cluster. If they're tethered to something, we might find answers there."

Rae frowned. "Half a kilometer in the dark with those things lurking? You better have a backup plan."

Alvarez straightened, the weariness in his eyes replaced with resolve. "We go as a team. Use portable floodlights to carve a path and move quickly. Rae, you'll cover our six. Eli, you stay in the middle and handle navigation. I'll take point."

Rae nodded reluctantly. "Fine. But if we get surrounded, I'm not dying out there because of your hero complex."

Alvarez smirked. "Noted."

The Journey

Stepping outside the base felt like crossing into another world. The floodlights mounted on their suits cast narrow beams, cutting through the darkness but offering little comfort. The shadows at the perimeter shifted restlessly, their forms undulating like living smoke.

Eli clutched his handheld scanner, his hands trembling slightly. "This way," he whispered, leading them toward the research outpost.

Every step was measured, every sound amplified in the eerie silence. The shadows trailed them, staying just beyond the reach of the light.

"They're watching us," Rae muttered, her plasma cutter raised and ready. "Waiting for us to screw up."

"They won't have to wait long if you keep talking," Alvarez shot back, his eyes scanning the horizon.

Eli stopped abruptly, holding up a hand. "Wait. There's something ahead."

A faint glow appeared in the distance, pulsating weakly. As they drew closer, the outline of the research outpost came into view. Its structure was partially collapsed, with jagged metal beams jutting out like broken bones.

The glow emanated from a cracked panel near the entrance, flickering erratically.

"What the hell happened here?" Rae asked, her voice hushed.

"No idea," Alvarez replied, stepping forward cautiously. "But stay sharp. This place feels… wrong."

Inside the Outpost

The interior of the outpost was a chaotic mess of debris and equipment. Dust floated in the air, disturbed by their movements. The glow from their suit lights revealed strange markings etched into the walls—symbols that seemed to pulse faintly, as though alive.

Eli's scanner beeped, drawing their attention. "I'm picking up an energy signature," he said, his brow furrowing. "It's… similar to the shadows."

"Where?" Alvarez asked, gripping his weapon tightly.

Eli pointed toward a sealed hatch at the far end of the room. "Down there. It's coming from below."

Rae groaned. "Of course it is. Why can't the answers ever be in a nice, safe place?"

Ignoring her comment, Alvarez approached the hatch and tried the manual release. It groaned in protest but eventually gave way, revealing a narrow ladder descending into darkness.

"I'll go first," Alvarez said.

"Like hell you will," Rae interjected, stepping forward. "You can barely stand after what happened earlier. I'll go."

Alvarez hesitated but nodded. "Fine. Eli, stay here and monitor the feed. Shout if you see anything."

Eli swallowed hard, his eyes darting to the shadows outside the outpost. "You're leaving me alone up here?"

"You'll be fine," Alvarez said, though his tone lacked conviction.

The Discovery

As Rae descended, her light illuminated a cavernous chamber carved into the lunar rock. At its center stood a strange device—a monolithic structure covered in the same symbols as the walls above. Tendrils of shadow energy writhed around it, pulsating rhythmically.

"What is this…?" Rae whispered, her voice echoing.

Alvarez followed shortly after, his gaze fixed on the device. "It looks ancient. Definitely not human."

Eli's voice crackled through their comms. "Guys, the shadows are moving. They're converging on your location!"

Before they could react, the device emitted a low hum, and the shadows in the chamber began to coalesce. A figure emerged from the darkness, its form shifting and unstable.

"You should not have come," it said, its voice a blend of many. Then darkness covered...
