Chapter 1 - unknown light

Deep within a primeval forest, where ancient trees stretched towards the heavens like gnarled fingers and the air hummed with unseen magical energies, lay a hidden cave. Within this cave, nestled amongst damp rocks and echoing with the drip of water, lived a colony of White Scale Lizards. Their scales, a pearly white, possessed a unique property: they could reflect light perfectly, rendering the lizards virtually invisible in the darkness of their subterranean home. Their yellow eyes, adapted to the gloom, gave them an unsettling, almost otherworldly appearance. These creatures were considered low-ranking magical beasts, their diet consisting primarily of insects and other small invertebrates.Among this colony, one lizard was different. A faint, ethereal light, like a miniature sun, hovered just before its eyes, pulsing gently. A disembodied voice echoed within its mind, clear and distinct despite the lizard's simple cognitive abilities: "Activating Evolution System." The lizard, driven by instinct, paid little attention to this strange phenomenon. It spotted a plump beetle scuttling across the cave floor and promptly devoured it. "Gained one Evolution Point," the system announced, the voice echoing once more. The lizard, still focused on its next meal, continued its routine.A week passed. The light and the voice remained, occasionally announcing the accumulation of more Evolution Points whenever the lizard ate. One day, while foraging for food, the lizard strayed further than usual, reaching the cave's entrance. Driven by an unfamiliar curiosity, it attempted to venture outside. The sudden onslaught of sunlight, however, was overwhelming. Its eyes, accustomed to the perpetual darkness of the cave, stung and watered, forcing it to retreat."Warning: Host is experiencing discomfort due to excessive light exposure," the system announced, its tone now tinged with a sense of urgency. "Evolution Points can be used to enhance ocular adaptation." The lizard remained oblivious to the system's warnings. "Initiating automatic adaptation to protect the host," the system declared, expending three Evolution Points. A subtle tingling sensation spread through the lizard's eyes as they began to adjust. Slowly, cautiously, it opened them again, this time able to withstand the sunlight. The world outside the cave was a riot of color and light, a stark contrast to the monochrome darkness it had always known. Towering trees, their leaves shimmering in the sunlight, stretched for miles, forming a verdant canopy overhead.Emboldened, the lizard ventured out of the cave, its tiny claws clicking on the forest floor. As it explored this new world, it heard the sound of hurried footsteps and panicked breathing. Climbing a nearby tree, it observed a scene unfolding below. A human man, dressed in tattered robes, was being pursued by five others, their faces grim and determined. They carried swords and other weapons, their intent clear. The chase ended near the base of the lizard's tree. "You're finally tired of running," one of the pursuers sneered, his voice laced with malice. The pursued man, panting heavily, let out a strained laugh. "Since you guys won't stop chasing me," he retorted, his eyes filled with a desperate resolve, "I guess I'll have to deal with you myself." He launched himself at his attackers, a fierce battle erupting beneath the tree. The clash of steel, the grunts of exertion, and the cries of pain echoed through the forest. Despite being outnumbered, the man fought with a desperate ferocity, his movements honed by years of training. One by one, he felled his attackers, until only he remained, standing amidst the fallen bodies, his own body riddled with wounds. He collapsed to his knees, his breath ragged. He sat down in a meditative posture, his eyes closed. A faint, ethereal glow emanated from his forehead as he attempted a forbidden technique: Soul Extraction. This dark art allowed a cultivator to steal the body of another living being, transferring their consciousness into the new vessel. The closest living creature was the lizard in the tree. The man focused his remaining energy, and his soul shot towards the unsuspecting creature."Warning: Foreign soul detected within host," the system immediately alerted, its voice now sharp and urgent. "Initiating soul cleansing protocol." A wave of energy surged through the lizard's body, violently ejecting the man's invading soul. However, the man's memories, his experiences, his knowledge, remained, now imprinted within the lizard's mind. The lizard, now possessing the memories of a twenty-first-century otaku reborn into a cultivation world, finally understood the meaning of the light, the voice, and the numbers that occasionally appeared before its eyes. He knew what the "Evolution System" was
