Chereads / THE FRAGMENTS OF DIVINITY / Chapter 9 - chapter 9

Chapter 9 - chapter 9

Haru's legs felt like they were weighed down by lead as he followed the golden figure through the forest. Aya walked beside him, her sharp eyes darting from the stranger to their surroundings, her distrust evident.

The tension in the air was thick, broken only by the occasional crunch of leaves underfoot. Finally, Haru couldn't hold his curiosity back any longer.

"Who are you?" he asked, his voice hoarse from exhaustion. "And why are you helping us?"

The figure didn't stop walking. "I am Lysander, Keeper of the Balance. My duty is to protect the remnants of the Divine Spark."

Haru frowned. "Divine Spark? Is that what's inside me?"

Lysander turned slightly, their golden helm catching the faint light. "Yes. You carry a fragment of the Creator's power. It is both a blessing and a curse."

Aya folded her arms, her tone skeptical. "And why should we trust you? For all we know, you could be another one of those psychos trying to kill us."

Lysander paused, turning to face them fully. "You don't have to trust me. But if you don't come with me, you won't survive the next encounter."

Aya opened her mouth to argue, but Haru spoke first. "Where are you taking us?"

"To the Sanctuary of Light," Lysander replied. "A place where you can begin to understand the power you wield. And where you might learn to control it."

The mention of control made Haru pause. The energy inside him was unpredictable, dangerous. If there was a chance to master it, he had to take it.

After a moment, he nodded. "Alright. We'll follow you."

Aya let out a frustrated sigh but didn't argue. "This better not be a waste of time."

Lysander resumed walking, and the trio continued in silence until they reached a clearing.

In the center of the clearing stood a towering structure made of gleaming white stone, its surface etched with intricate symbols that seemed to glow faintly. The air around it was calm, almost serene, and Haru felt a strange sense of peace wash over him.

"This is the Sanctuary," Lysander said, leading them to the entrance. "Inside, you will find the answers you seek. But be warned—the path is not without its challenges."

The massive doors opened with a low rumble, revealing a dimly lit corridor that stretched far beyond what seemed possible.

Aya hesitated at the threshold, her fingers twitching toward the hilt of her weapon. "I don't like this. Feels like a trap."

"It's not," Lysander assured her. "But it will test you. Only those who are worthy can unlock the Sanctuary's secrets."

Haru swallowed hard, stepping inside. The moment he crossed the threshold, he felt a shift in the air—a subtle hum, as if the walls themselves were alive. Aya followed reluctantly, and Lysander closed the doors behind them.

The corridor led to a circular chamber bathed in golden light. In the center of the room floated a crystal sphere, its surface swirling with energy.

"This is the Heart of the Sanctuary," Lysander explained. "To awaken its power, you must confront the truths hidden within yourselves."

Aya scoffed. "Great. A magical therapy session."

Lysander ignored her, gesturing for Haru to step forward. "The power within you is tied to your deepest fears, your greatest doubts. To master it, you must face them head-on."

Haru hesitated, his mind racing. He didn't know what to expect, but something about the crystal called to him. Taking a deep breath, he reached out, his fingers brushing the sphere's surface.

In an instant, the world around him shifted.

He was no longer in the Sanctuary. Instead, he stood in the middle of a vast, empty void. Shadows swirled around him, and a familiar voice echoed in the darkness.

"You don't deserve this power."

Haru turned, his heart sinking as he saw a reflection of himself—twisted and menacing, its eyes glowing with a cold, unfeeling light.

"You're weak," the reflection sneered. "You think you can control this? You'll only destroy everything you touch."

The words cut deep, stirring doubts Haru had buried. But as the shadows closed in, a memory surfaced—a memory of his promise to himself.

I won't let this power consume me. I'll use it to protect the people I care about.

Summoning his resolve, Haru clenched his fists, the energy within him flaring to life. The shadows recoiled, and his reflection faltered.

"I may not know everything about this power," Haru said, his voice steady. "But I won't let fear control me."

With a surge of light, the void shattered, and Haru found himself back in the Sanctuary.

Aya was watching him, her expression unreadable. "You okay?"

Haru nodded, though he felt like he'd run a marathon. "Yeah. I think so."

Lysander stepped forward, a hint of approval in his voice. "You've taken the first step. But this is only the beginning."

As the golden light of the chamber dimmed, Haru couldn't shake the feeling that something greater was waiting for them. Something that would test them far beyond what they'd faced so far.

And deep down, he knew there was no turning back.
