Chapter 1 - THE RISE OF A LEGEND

Chapter 1: The Curse of Black Hollow

The villagers of Black Hollow lived in perpetual fear. The dense forest that surrounded the small, forgotten town was a place no one dared to enter, not even in daylight. For centuries, whispers of unspeakable horrors had passed from generation to generation—beasts with eyes like fire, trees that moved in the dark, and a shadowy figure that watched from the woods.

Legends spoke of an ancient curse tied to a warrior who had once lived among them—a man who defied the gods and unleashed terror upon the land. Though no one alive could confirm the truth, the signs of the curse were clear: crops failed, livestock vanished, and villagers who strayed too close to the forest never returned.

That night, under a blood-red moon, the air in Black Hollow was thick with tension. A storm brewed on the horizon, and the villagers gathered in the town square, whispering about the latest disappearance. A child, no older than ten, had wandered too close to the forest's edge. His screams echoed through the trees, but when the search party arrived, there was no sign of him—only a trail of blood leading deeper into the shadows.

In the midst of their fear stood Kael Thorn, a quiet, brooding young man with no memory of his past beyond his name. He had arrived in Black Hollow five years earlier, stumbling out of the forest with a rusted sword in hand and wounds that should have killed him. The villagers had taken him in reluctantly, fearing he was a harbinger of doom.

Kael felt the pull of the forest every day, like a voice whispering in his mind. He ignored it, working as a smith's apprentice and keeping his head down. But tonight, as the storm rolled in and lightning cracked across the sky, the whispers grew louder, almost deafening.

"Kael," a voice rasped, barely audible over the wind. "Come."

He turned sharply, but there was no one there.

Chapter 2: The Shadow in the Woods

Unable to ignore the call, Kael found himself standing at the edge of the forest. The wind howled, and the trees swayed unnaturally, their branches reaching out like claws. The rusted sword he'd carried for years hung at his side, feeling heavier than usual.

"Don't do it," came a voice behind him. It was Alden, the village elder, his face pale and drawn. "The forest doesn't just take. It keeps. You step in, you may never come out."

Kael met Alden's gaze, his jaw tightening. "If the boy's alive, someone has to try."

Alden hesitated, then sighed. "You've felt it too, haven't you? The pull. The curse."

Kael nodded, gripping the hilt of his sword. "I don't know what it is, but it's not letting me ignore it anymore."

Without another word, Kael stepped into the forest. The air changed immediately, growing colder and thicker, as if the trees were breathing. The ground beneath his boots felt alive, pulsing faintly. Shadows twisted and stretched, creating shapes that seemed to move on their own.

Hours passed—or maybe minutes. Time felt strange here. The deeper Kael went, the louder the whispers became, forming words that sent chills down his spine.

"Return… the sword… awaken the king."

Suddenly, the ground gave way beneath him, and Kael tumbled into a dark, underground cavern. When he stood, he found himself face to face with an enormous stone altar. At its center lay a skeletal figure in armor, clutching a blade that gleamed despite the lack of light.

It was then that Kael realized the whispers weren't coming from the forest. They were coming from the sword at his side.
